1  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: National Railcard discounts - ongoing discussion, no longer date specific on: November 23, 2017, 08:55:14
I guess it is one small  recognition of how unaffordable rail travel has become for large swathes of people, however why that has to be limited to under 30s I really don't know.

We're not the only place though. In Switzerland virtually no one, bar the occasional tourist, pays full prices for public transport as I believe there is a national travel discount card scheme (for purchase, but the savings far outweigh the outlay) available to all.

Imbalanced loads? As in one 5-car section is crowded, the other empty? Or imbalanced in some other way?

Everyone sat on the left, causing the train to list over to that side  Wink

Yes to the first, no to the second.   Crammed at London end, space at country end.

The HST (High Speed Train)'s are often the same, though at least the contents can be re-distributed within a little easier than with a 2x5 IET (Intercity Express Train).

I have noticed if there is an imbalance on a Turbo leaving PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains), it's usually the other way round, country end busy, London end quiet(er).

I heard reports where 10 to 12 car increases have been made on London other lines that the two extra carriages have been added at the outer (country) end and not at the London end where the trains overcrowd and it's really needed

5  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Christmas and Boxing Day trains - ongoing discussion on: November 15, 2017, 14:06:50
I predict Crossrail will have a Boxing Day service within a couple of years.

I noted that Overground have no Boxing Day services, so I'm not so sure about that

Good to see that the new London Overground concession, awarded to Arriva today, has, amongst other things, a commitment to run Boxing Day services on some routes.

TfL» (Transport for London - about) manage to run a Sunday service on the Underground. And all night sponsored (free) service on New Years Eve. I don't see why it's beyond the rail companies to do similar on the big trains...if the demand is there of course...
8  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: Crossrail/Elizabeth Line. From construction to operation - ongoing discussion on: November 13, 2017, 16:06:33

All the talk about TfL» (Transport for London - about) wanting this or that is superfluous - I thought Hong Kong's MTR had been given the operating contract for the Tin-Lizzie Line three year's ago?

At a recent meeting concerning the progress - or rather total lack of - rebuilding Hayes & Harlington Station it appeared that it was the requirements of MTR that was delaying things there. MTR has to realise that the Tin-Lizzie Line is not an out and back Hong Kong Metro line - but is a real mainline with mixed freight / intercity / psuedo metro services / steam specials. Like their involvement with SWT (South West Trains) and its varied inter-connected routes, MTR are going to find the challenges of running Tin-Lizzie trains vastly different to out and back Hong Kong Metro services.

Do you know what a Tin Lizzie is? Can you please clarify the relevance to this topic?

2/ numerous disturbed individuals from local ethnic communities who take drastic action to 'solve' their problems.

Could you quote the source of your statistics please or is that just another sweeping generalisation?

And I bet MTR management haven't any experience of negotiating with such as our rail unions. In China I suspect its 'do as we say' and staff are not unionised.

I think you'll find most Chinese people, be they individuals or as part of a larger organisation are a lot more sophisticated, enterprising, worldly wise and intelligent than you appear to give them credit for.
9  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Great Western franchise to be broken up? on: November 09, 2017, 00:26:48
I always thought one of the advantages (if there were any) of having the former Wessex routes in the GWR (Great Western Railway) franchise was the feeder aspect of the smaller routes. That would be a loss overall.

The other two major long distance franchises in the UK (United Kingdom) - west and east coast main lines - both have multiple regional 'feeder' franchises and seem to operate ok. Do you think that would work differently on the western route?
10  All across the Great Western territory / Looking forward - after Coronavirus to 2045 / Re: New station hardware for new trains on: November 08, 2017, 17:19:53
Or levelling with platform-side water supplies

hadn't thought of that.  Mind you the HSTs (High Speed Train) also used these water supplies did they not and will they not be wrongly spaced for the new coach length?

Hmmm, the humble hosepipe might just overcome this issue?!  Wink
11  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: New Train on: November 08, 2017, 11:11:13
Many people don't arise from their seat to get off until the train has stopped....

They're told to stay seated on buses and planes until they come to a halt, so you can't blame 'em ...

It's also safer to stay seated on a train. In the rare event of a low speed impact on a train, most of the injuries occur to standees.
12  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Do we owe GWR £14.40? on: November 05, 2017, 17:25:51
How about option 5?

As you had one member of the group who's something of an expert on trains and ticketing, the group could have joined the part of the train in which the train manager was travelling[/i]

For a group of newcomers to GWR (Great Western Railway), just getting in at any 'random' door's reasonable.
How would you know where the TM(resolve) is?  Hardly advertised on train or by platform indications!
Having been on this forum for a few years now I'm aware of many more things than I ever was (!) but still wouldn't know where a TM is   Embarrassed

Usually to be seen on the platform immediately after having released the doors. He or she is normally to be found, at least in GWR territory, in a green uniform. Fairly easily spotted when it's a 4 car train, less so if a (full length) HST (High Speed Train).
13  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: Looking for comparable line(s) to TransWilts elsewhere in the UK on: November 04, 2017, 10:35:55
Slightly more helpfully, the Vale of Glamorgan line has many similarities to what you describe, especially the stretch between Barry & Bridgend where passenger services were re-introduced in 2005 after a Beeching imposed break of 41 years.

I've often said that the RransWilts has some especially unusual features.

Including a dodgy name by the looks of it.

That was Graham slipping into his best Scooby-doo impression!
15  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: 1st class advance booking - choice of seat on: November 03, 2017, 14:17:32
I've tried that method before. It can help to remove or add some of the preferences - aisle, window, quiet carriage etc as that sometimes seems to make quite a difference to the seat the booking system allocated to you.
