Poo-powered street lights are already in use in parts of the USA, the idea being that dog walkers pick up after their pets and tip the 'fuel' into a little generator, which provides lighting in dog walking areas where there wasn't any previously. We need one or two of those in Melksham!
47  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Underground Stations Quiz on: December 16, 2014, 08:45:59
Seems like this quiz wasn't difficult enough to test our Forum and rail users! I have an idea brewing for something much more challenging, but it'll have to wait until the new year now.

I am not prepared to embarrass myself publically by admitting my puny score!

Just a quick comment to say how much I like the picture BNM has as his signature at present.  I can see this bridge in all it's illuminated glory from my daughter's guest bedroom window (she lives in Southville)  There's something magical about that bridge at night.  Not that it's any less impressive during the day!  Being a country girl I'm not normally keen on town/cityscapes, but this is one beautiful structure.  Good old IKB (Isambard Kingdom Brunel).

It didn't work, but easily fixed Smiley

My score is 11 out of 14.  Not too bad for an ex-Londoner.

Thanks for the edit, Brucey.

Informal plural of focus is Focuses I believe; Foci being the formal form.  And yes, there is only ONE Escort - the Mark 1, that is!  (not pictured, unfortunately, as only spotted at classic car rallies these days) Those were the days! (Sigh)

A London Underground quiz found via Facebook - how many stations can you identify?

53  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: CIS information feed on: October 19, 2014, 08:16:56
Well, that's nice and straightforward, except for my initial confusion re the initials of the system:  CIS (Customer Information System) has always stood for Co-op Insurance Society as far as I was concerned! Cheesy

Oh, well done BNM, for unearthing that brilliant news snippet!

So are there no overnight trains to the west country, for folk who like to travel well and truly off peak?   Grin  That's the wonder of caravanning, I can travel overnight if I'm anticipating heavy traffic.  The type of sites I visit these days are usually blessed with a parking bay for (well and truly) early arrivals.  However, now I'm retired I usually avoid Bank Holidays and such like the plague.  Whatever the season, I prefer travelling in the wee small hours, not just because it's quiet, but because I can thumb my nose at the Jeremy Clarkson camp and say WHAT road nuisance?   Wink
Holiday trains?  Sorry, my would-be green credentials fly out of the window at the thought.
57  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Birnbeck Pier, Weston super Mare on: May 26, 2014, 21:20:03
I believe they are using two inshore lifeboats from Knightstone Harbour for most 'shouts', but the larger boat remains on Birnbeck Island. It will still be used if there is an immediate danger to life that cannot be covered by the smaller inshore boats.

The larger boat was last used in anger on 2nd March 2014, launching from Birnbeck Island. That story highlights not only the dangers the crews face in putting to sea to rescue others, but also the dangers the crew have to deal with getting to the island and launching in the dark.
When I was living in Weston, about 15 years ago, even then I used to feel concerned about the safety of the lifeboatmen negotiating their way along that rickety old pier to get to the boat house.  I'm sure they must be at more risk of injury getting along the pier than when they're at sea.  Bless their hearts.

Oh goodie, that'll make a nice little outing round the town! However I noticed from the Bristol Post blurb that there is no mention of the tourist bus visiting the old pier - surely of sufficient 'historic interest' to be include in the itinerary?  However, I'm struggling to remember the location of 'Knighstone Island'.  Not wishing to be pedantic or anything, but shouldn't that have a t after the h?  Someone put me out of my misery.....
