Casting a magic wand into the future , the as yet as un-named Wevvers is under construction at Portishead and it will be within 300 yards of the as yet unbuilt station! I have started a thread on the Portishead streetlife page , and have written to Wetherspoons suggesting names in keeping with local history. My first suggestions is 'The Fred E Weatherly'. He was a prolific Victorian songwriter brought up in Portishead, the John Lennon of his day. His most famous lyrics are those of 'Danny Boy'. For the real Posset locals this could be parodied as 'Denny Buoy'!. in his autobiography 'Piano and Gown' he mentions catching the train from Portishead to begin his studies at Oxford. I strongly suspect it was the very first one in 1862! My second suggestion is 'The Power and the Phosphorus', relating to two aspects of local history long since demolished. Other suggestions have been made on Streetlife which range from IMHO▸ most imaginative to 'what have you been drinking' ?!

On Points West tonight, there was a report on the consultation that opened today on the re-opening of the Portishead line, and more particularly, the site of the new Portishead station. However whoever drew the accompanying map made a major blunder. The line from Portishead was shown as crossing the Avon just east of the M5 bridge, joining the Severn Beach line, with no sign of the freight line through the Avon Gorge and into Royal Portbury Dock, whatsoever ! I hope someone has told the Department of Transport.......

'Text walking lane' in Antwerp (June 2015) The objective of the scheme is said to be preventing pedestrian pavement collisions People sending text messages in the centre of the Belgian city of Antwerp have been provided with dedicated temporary "text walking lanes" so that they do not collide with pedestrians. The initiative - some would say publicity stunt - is the brainchild of a smartphone store based in the city. It says that a significant number of mobile phone breakages happen because of "text walking" collisions. There are now believed to be more mobile phones in the world than people. Figures released by mobile operators and associated companies show that there are about 7.5 billion mobiles in the world, compared to a world population estimated to be 7.2 billion by the US Census Bureau.
The "text walking lanes" may become permanent fixtures "You probably walk through the streets while texting or sending Whatsapp messages to your friends and don't really pay attention to your surroundings - only to whatever is happening on your screen," a spokesman for Mlab, a smart phone laboratory based in Antwerp, was quoted by Yahoo News as saying. "This causes collisions with poles or other pedestrians. You could, unknowingly, even be endangering your own life while you 'textwalk' when you cross the street without looking up." Mlab describes itself as a concept store that carries out phone repairs, sells the latest gadgets or provides expert advice to phone users. Although the "text walking lanes" are temporary, officials say, there is a possibility they will become permanent.
