1  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Re: 0630 Paddington - Bristol TM - Adelante on: March 12, 2008, 22:22:46
You could almost hear the collective sigh of despair at Chippenham this morning...

Let's hope it's not a long term thing!

1330 ex-Bristol Temple Meads - London Paddington took a little detour through Bathampton Loop because of a late running CDF» (Cardiff - next trains)-P/mouth service in front of it today, just thought someone might be interested!
3  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Train Codes? on: March 12, 2008, 08:40:37
Hi,

Often on here people refer to the train by their codes: i.e. 1C01.

I was wondering how people knew what they were, if there is anywhere on t'internet to find them etc.

Cheers,

Adam

To use the words of the great Economy Klaus, the 0744 from Chippenham to Bristol today has been adelanted.

It was almost nostalgic, if not a little intimate.

Anyone able to shed any light on it?

FGW (First Great Western) are obviously not the only passenger service with stock issues.

The Pont L'Abbe was apparently meant to be only a temporary measure while her replacement was being built.

The 5 hours could be shorter, but who wants to be dumped in Roscoff at 3.00am, it's not that exciting at 3pm.

It's my understanding (and only that - it's not confirmed fact, and I would welcome corrections!) that Val de Loire was swapped/exchanged/bartered... from DFDS as the running costs were too high for B/Ferries to maintain. In the interim B/Ferries are using Pont L'Abb^ on the Roscoff sailing - It's actually not bad vessel!

As for Roscoff - a good friend of mine once described it as "Biddestone-on-Sea", which will mean more if you live in the Chippenham area. Basically it's a tiny village, with one pub, one post office, and a few houses!

8  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Between the Western Portal of the Western Box Tunnel and Bathampton Junction... on: January 31, 2008, 17:34:53
Hi,

On the train between Chippenham and Bath today, I noticed that between the western portal of the western Box tunnel and Bathampton Junction there is a building of some sort on the left hand side (going Down).  Let me describe it...

It's long and thin, with, at one end, a curved end with some, what look to me like, machine gun slots! It's made of brick, and is not very high in stature.

Sorry, it's not a very clear description!

51.405417, -2.289681 on Google Maps to see a picture, which might help!

Simply, I wondered if anyone knew what it is/was, and what is/was used for and the history around it!

Cheers,

Adam

Hi!

I'm still relatively new to the forum, so not entirely sure, if this is thr right place to post this....but here goes!

A few months ago, my neighbour passed away, and his relatives let me have some railway memorabilia and things (he used to work on the railway.....many moons ago!). Among the things were uniforms, which went to the Mid Hants railway, and a torch used on stations to give the all clear to train managers/conductors....it's rectangular, almost, in shape, and has a handle on the top, there is a knob which turns through 4 settings...white, green, red, and off!

The thing is, it has no battery, I was wondering if someone on here could tell me what sort of battery it would need, and if there is somewhere I could get one!

Thanks in advance.....

10  All across the Great Western territory / Your rights and redress / Re: Missing out stops to avoid penalties on: October 31, 2007, 15:20:39
This really annoys me when train companies do this though I dont think they miss a penalty for doing it, anyone confirm this? It just means more chance that the next service that the late running train is booked on either runs on time or not as late if the previous service had stopped at every station. Either way it's not a good practice as far as the travelling public are concerned and FGW (First Great Western) appear to be doing it quite a bit.

I had this the other day, when i wanted to commute back from Bath, I found my train had been terminated at Chippenham, then returned to Padd. Presumably they ran it down to Thingley Jnct and back, although if anyone could shed any light on what is most likely to have happened....
11  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Re: Not a good start to the day on: October 31, 2007, 15:05:57
I would have thought, if the line is re-opened, they would be able to carry out some ECS (Empty Coaching Stock) movements...or would I be really naive and wrong in this?
12  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Hi! on: October 31, 2007, 15:00:18
Good afternoon everyone....

I'm Adam and I'm a student (awaits anti-student rants) at the University of Bath (studying French & German)...

I commute between Chippenham (where I live) and Bath...not a long journey, but still interesting nonetheless.

I found this forum on Google, meant to come back later, and forgot....but I remembered now.

I would like to say, that on the whole the staff of FGW (First Great Western), who I have met are really helpful, cheery and generally a pleasure to meet!

I look forward to contributing on this forum....
