31  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Bonaparte's at Bristol Temple Meads on: March 21, 2024, 23:26:42
From Network Rail's Bristol Regeneration website pages:

"Alongside this rewire work is completed inside the former Bonaparte’s Bar, with basic ‘core and shell’ fitting out to make it ready for letting for retail due to take place in early 2024".

Now, I don't think that anything quite that date specific was there when I looked previously so maybe something is happening now.  On the other hand, I've seen timescales lapse and late revisions on their website before.  I'll have another nose around next time that I'm down there.
32  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Brabazon, Bristol on: March 19, 2024, 20:01:24
YTL quite possibly don't want the arena to open before the railway station is up and running so the timescale of the former may just reflect the timescale of the latter..

I voted Monmouth as a base for exploring the Welsh/English Marches, a relatively little known but delightful area to explore.
The only other place on the list that I've visited is Winchester but an afternoon there doesn't really qualify me to vote it.... interesting though it was.
My "Somewhere Else" votes are for the Peak District around Buxton and Matlock/Matlock Bath or around Rye on the South Coast....both very successful three day breaks.
Special mention also for Snowdonia, weather allowing. We were based around Bedgellert but Betws-y-Coed was also impressive.
All the above are doable by train (okay, Bedgellert is on the Welsh Highland but its brilliant).

Two and a half years build/conversion time after all the preparation work is completed with the main structure of the hanger already in situ?  It strikes me as being a rather low priority project for them.
35  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Bonaparte's at Bristol Temple Meads on: March 18, 2024, 09:55:02
It looks like there's a bit of activity in the former Bonaparte's.  Work benches have appeared, doors removed and a couple of people in hard hats and hi viz were evident... although they had gone back behind the open door by the time that I had wound the camera up.
36  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Global Centre of Rail Excellence on: March 16, 2024, 18:19:58

.....but no real passengers will likely ever travel on it, or stand at the station platforms waiting for a train.

I rather fancy that there would be a few UK (United Kingdom) rail tour companies that, given the chance, would like to have this as a weekend destination sometime in the future.

It has the look of a metro style station to me...and I don't mean that in a derogatory sense.  Also, I reckon I like the colour scheme for the brick wall.

38  All across the Great Western territory / Media about railways, and other means of transport / Train hits trees illegally dumped on railway lines. on: March 13, 2024, 12:30:22
This could have been so much worse.  Moreover, the perpetrator(s) must have known what could have resulted.

IET (Intercity Express Train) services on the Severn Beach Line?  The Beeb appear to think so.

40  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Swanage Railway goes cashless on: March 09, 2024, 15:43:01
Another reason to keep cash for now is for visitors from abroad.  As I understand it, card payments outside of your country of residence can still be an expensive way to pay.... unless things have changed.
I don't know the actual numbers but I would guess it's more than a negligible source of revenue.
41  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Cardiff "Crossrail" takes step forward. on: March 09, 2024, 11:13:48
Cardiff "Crossrail" is due to take another step forward shortly with further approval to progress the project.
The article below also outlined the initial stages with Cardiff Central to Cardiff Bay being the first part.
Although it's not specified, it seems to me that the extra platform at Central will be outside of the station at Callaghan Square but I'm not totally clear on this.
Anyway, article link below.

42  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Swanage Railway goes cashless on: March 09, 2024, 10:56:38
Although I voted "no", it was the closest option available to my preferred answer of "not yet".
I think it's still just a bit early for a significant but decreasing proportion of the travelling public who for whatever reason cannot or prefer not to use cards but I can see that changing.
I'm trying to remember when it was that I last paid for a railway ticket by cash....and I can't think of an instance for many years.
43  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Cardiff Bay Station branch on: March 05, 2024, 23:03:14
A day out in Cardiff today took me eventually to Cardiff Bay.  Here's a photo taken from the station shelter showing work coming on for the second platform and line.
This compares to an up thread photo posted in mid December from the same spot.  A lot of the additional platform is already built and the foundations for the rest are being completed.
The intermediate new station on the way to Queen Street is looking even closer to completion.
44  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Brabazon, Bristol on: March 02, 2024, 14:12:34
Planning permission has been granted for an expanded Filton Keynes..... sorry, Brabazon District.  YTL seem to have persuaded the planning authorities to more densely develop the former airfield with talk of staged developments building transport infrastructure alongside.  The article is thin on detail of what this transport infrastructure will actually be and while the long planned station is mentioned, there is nothing to indicate any increased urgency in it's provision.
