Google tells me Penzance to Aberdeen is 505 miles, so in 8 hours is an average 63.125 mph.

There's been a suggestion from Stephen "Simple Minds fan" Williams* to use multistorey car parks for bike parking.
Quote
Williams said: “There’s always lots of chatter about cycle paths, road closures and other aspects of highway management. But this deals with only one of the barriers to increasing the confidence of occasional cyclists to ride more.”

He added: “These measures would increase leisure cycling but the key to getting more people to see their bike as a mode of transport for shopping, leisure visits or commuting to work is the confidence that you can leave your bike for a few hours or the whole working day and find it’s still there when you return.

“Car theft was rife until the last decade or so but car security and car park security has seen theft rates go down. We need the same effort to see a big drop in bike thefts.

Now, I agree with him that reliable, secure parking is an incredibly important component of being able to use a bike for transport around town. Sheffield stands on wider pavements are great but there simply aren't enough of them. Locking to railings and fences is not necessarily secure, can cause trips hazards and often annoys property owners/users. But I'm not sure that putting bikes in multistoreys is an attractive idea.

Firstly, it is insecure; bike locks and the Sheffield stands themselves are not invincible, and these locations give thieves the isolation and time to work out of sight. As he points out, theft of cars is much rarer nowadays but theft from cars is still very common.

Secondly, these places are dark, ugly, and stink of oil and urine. They are simply the least attractive edifices in any modern town, not places anyone would seek out.

Thirdly, the locations themselves are not always convenient. Stacking cars vertically in centralised locations works because there is no other space for them; cyclists would generally rather park nearer their destination(s).

That said, the basic principle that parking space, as well as road space, needs to be reallocated, is one I agree with.

*To be clear, I have no idea of his musical tastes and I'm not implying he has a simple mind!
1218  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: More services for the Worcester to Bristol belt? on: September 07, 2020, 10:16:27
It is a good idea (though not necessarily as part of the MetroWest thing). Are there concrete plans for it to happen?

Apparently the deputy mayor of Ghent received death threats a few years ago when he championed the 'circulation plan', which stopped private motorists passing through the middle of the town. Even the Dutch thought the Ghent plan was a bit brave. In 2012 the mode share of cycling there was 22%. When the circulation plan was introduced in 2017, they hoped to raise this share to 35% by 2030. They hit that target in 2019: https://youtu.be/sEOA_Tcq2XA

If you design a city for cars, you get cars. If you design a city for people, you get people.
Circulation zones, modal filtering; it's not rocket science and it's not new. Most of all though, I'm imagining the Frome opened up and flowing...
1220  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Bristol Temple Meads Station redevelopment on: September 04, 2020, 17:38:08
She's not the first person to point out this problem. It's also an issue for the elderly of either sex and of course children. As well as for anyone with a bike (let alone trike) which is in some way non-standard. All these points were made when they were trialling the onboard bike cupboards for the IETs (Intercity Express Train) (and probably Voyagers too).

Three-day season tickets are a (probably overdue) recognition of changing work patterns but do nothing for those working eg one week from home, one week in office. Could we have a "n days per month/quarter/year" ticket?

They might be taken to signify "even we realised that a painted line cycle line would be too narrow/unprotected/etc to do any good, so we painted these instead." In some cases at least.

They are some use though in the case of "bike boxes" aka advanced stop lines at traffic lights.
1223  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Extinction Rebellion (XR) protests - August 2020 on: September 02, 2020, 11:47:22
I'm mildly surprised at the arrests. There doesn't seem to have been any trouble in Bristol last weekend.

People who have been caught crossing Bristol Bridge and driving through Baldwin Street in an unauthorised vehicle will “shortly” be getting warning letters from the council.

Bristol City Council will start issuing £60 fines in a few weeks to anyone who has breached new traffic restrictions introduced on August 2 in a bid to cut pollution and make it easier to walk and cycle in the city centre.

They might have it working by November...
1226  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Extinction Rebellion (XR) protests - August 2020 on: August 29, 2020, 20:41:03
I wandered down to Prince Street Bridge today to see what was going on. Not a lot, really. It was pretty much like any Saturday on Wapping Wharf, with people milling around, eating and buying, except everyone was crossing the bridge on foot, bike or electric monowheel. There were a couple of XR (Crossrail) people visible, chiefly a man singing really bad (my opinion, I'm sure some people liked it) folk music. I wanted to ask someone, but didn't get a chance, if they were hoping Kye Dudd would follow this weekend up in a year or so by closing the bridge.

But I did get a chance to look around the Matthew.  Smiley

The longer our leaders ignore peaceful protests against real injustices, the more likely we are to get violent ones.
We're arguably already getting it but it's not, and probably won't be, from the XR crowd. It's in Africa, the Middle East, India and other parts of the world where the line between famine and feast is thinner and frailer.

Edited to sort out the missing quote.
1227  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Extinction Rebellion (XR) protests - August 2020 on: August 29, 2020, 12:42:16
Ironically, that 1895 plaque with its praise of Colston is still in situ.
1228  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: Potholes on: August 28, 2020, 19:04:50
There is a website and an app which allows you to report a pothole by either filling in a form or taking a photo and using your phone's location services (GPS, presumably) to alert the relevant HA (Highways Agency) of the site, size, depth.

https://www.fillthathole.org.uk

Fix my street is another one. It also allows you report faulty street lights, traffic lights out of order and similar faults.

1229  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Extinction Rebellion (XR) protests - August 2020 on: August 28, 2020, 18:16:03
Presumably XR (Crossrail) won't be present at Bristol Bridge. It seems that their protest here last year that proved this could be closed to cars without causing major problems.

The divides between protest, pulling in the same direction and partnering are sometime wafer thin, even where the common objectives are initially approached from different angles.
Kye Dudd, the city council's head of transport, cited XR's closure of the Bridge as having proved it was possible, when the official closure was announced a couple of months back.
1230  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: SSP (Upper Crust) cuts jobs - effect on station catering? on: August 27, 2020, 17:40:28
I was at Paddington last week and most of the food outlets were closed which surprised me - mainly as I was quite hungry. Ended up with something from a 2/3rds closed Prett.

I expected some to be open but with reduced staff/counter space etc. I'd imagine if they're closed people will get use to them being closed and stop using them.
I'd imagine that with the recent Greencore coronavirus outbreak, people might become wary of packaged cold food. (I don't think Greencore supply Pret but they do supply most supermarkets).

Anyway, I guess it's easier to lay staff off now then hire again when/if business picks up than carry on paying the same number and end up going bust.
