256  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture Overseas / Re: Ukraine rail engineers at Lydney on: February 21, 2023, 19:00:33
I am not sure Ukraine Railways would say, and Russian figures couldn't be trusted.

BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) news https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-64706057

Basically an updated version of the Bailey bridge.

Plans to overcome the difference in gauge
Quote
The plans are to build the new high-speed link on the existing Warsaw-Lviv-Kyiv route, adapting it to the European gauge width of 1435 mm in order to carry trains moving at speeds of up to 250 kilometres per hour.
although I don't think it will be in time to materially affect the current conflict.

And the Presidential train

How about cuttings Twyford, Tring and Edge Hill come to mind.

This reminded me of the engravings of JC Bourne https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Cooke_Bourne who you could say recorded "The seven wonders of railways of the British Isles" in the Victorian era.
259  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Consultation - minimum service levels - to 15 May 2023 on: February 21, 2023, 06:52:44

Minimum service levels (MSLs (Miniature Stop Lights (foot crossing))▸ ) aim to limit the impacts of strike action on the lives and livelihoods of the public and to strike a balance between the ability of unions and their members to take strike action with the need for the wider public to be able to access key services during strikes.

Surely a good employer wouldn't need to be considering this sort of option.
260  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: What should you ask your MP to lobby for to support the rail passenger? on: February 21, 2023, 06:50:00
It would be useful if the MPs (Member of Parliament) regularly travelled by train, and then they probably wouldn't need us to tell them what was needed?

Royalty? Do they have similar going towards Kings Lynn?
262  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Seating on a train - which do you prefer. on: February 16, 2023, 06:49:03
My preference is for somewhere I can keep an eye on the bike (Brompton). Rear seat on Voyagers large luggage area where you can tuck the bike behind. Sliding the bike under a table is problematical, as you end up effectively taking two seats, which is not immediately obvious to others wanting the space. On IETs (Intercity Express Train) usually stand in the bike space.
263  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / A bit radical? on: February 14, 2023, 17:19:22
Rail is not the main focus of this item.

All major road building projects in Wales are scrapped.

There is a bit of me that thinks this is good, another bit worries that I have not seen any obvious connection to active and sustainable transport alternatives (please point out if I have missed them). Is it a bit of a sledgehammer to crack a nut, or have we got the stage where we have to do something a bit radical?
264  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Watchdog takes Equality Act steps against government over rail access on: February 14, 2023, 06:57:32
I think the issue isn't just the hardware, but the software and the peopleware. It has been reported elsewhere the people with visual disabilities are particularly concerned. I have also seen examples of what might be thought of as "bloodymindedness" at staffed stations where station staff have stood there and watched the guard/train manager find a deploy the on-train ramp (of a standard train that runs through that station).

At risk of inciting trouble, what it needs is one of the disability groups to organise wheel chair users at every unmanned station on a DOO (Driver-Only Operation (that is, trains which operate without carrying a guard)) line and see what that does for the time keeping.
265  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Watchdog takes Equality Act steps against government over rail access on: February 13, 2023, 10:23:55
Haven't seen if this has been put elsewhere:

As always will be interesting to see what, if anything, happens as a result.

More news on the Rosslare - Waterford link, from RTE(resolve):

It is expected that the all-island rail review will be published in the coming weeks, although because of the 32-county nature of the study, the lack of an administration in Northern Ireland is understood to have hampered these plans.

Although any lack of an administration in Northern Ireland shouldn't affect the Rosslare - Waterford link.
268  Journey by Journey / North Downs Line / Re: Reading: Work on 106-year-old bridge to disrupt traffic on: February 12, 2023, 15:53:14
I have just been under the bridge and had a look from the pavement.

Yes it is two bridges side by side. My uncalibrated eyeballs think it might be a foot between the flanges at the bottom of the bridge deck, and possibly three feet between the sides. In case of dispute refer to my optometrist.
269  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: 2023 Delays and Cancellations on: February 12, 2023, 15:48:38
Another well maintained Network Rail structure that requires no maintenance and fewer inspections….. perhaps!

Yes but economists and Minsters in the Treasury know far more about these things than Network Rail engineers so if they say it is safe to reduce inspections it must be.

Do I hear a faint echo of "we don't need experts"?
270  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Underpromise. Overdeliver. on: February 12, 2023, 15:45:56
Similar in both engineering and my analytical job. Quote a realistic delivery time and then add contingency. When you deliver early they think you are a magician (?). Clients approve, even if management aren't keen.
