Scotland is the only area, that I am aware of, that has done an economic evaluation of the benefits of cycle tourism.

"Working in partnership with Transport Scotland" presumably means some level of subsidy (in addition to normal rail subsidy?). It will be interesting to see how long the service survives.

And is it Southern who have done away with toilets in some of their stock?

Sounds like an appealing area to go on holiday, or a Friday/Saturday night out.

Public transport systems that don't work partly to blame.

Remarkably difficult things to identify from vertical aerial photography. I have been trying to identify one next to the line from Godalming to Guildford. Not on OS (Ordnance Survey) maps and virtually invisible on aerial photography (and StreetView isn't in focus enough to read the signs on the gate), obviously have to be investigated on the bike.

Another new face at DfT» (Department for Transport - about), Lucy Frazer. Quote from written answer "“As set out in the Transport Decarbonisation Plan, we want public transport and walking and cycling to be the natural first choice for our daily journeys".

We will see if this survives the Chancellor's rigorous financial discipline.

Some money has been found to improve National Cycle Network Route 41 between Lawrence Weston and Avonmouth. I hope the tunnel under the motorway is a bit more appealing than it looks in the photo.
340  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Smartcards across the GWR network. on: September 28, 2022, 09:43:52
A broader question.

We are having a foreign visitor. They are arriving at Luton Airport and travelling to Cambridge, the Smart ticket map says no problem with options of

Smartcard
m-Ticket
e-Ticket

They then wish to go from Cambridge to Falmouth, to which the Smart ticket map says "Smart ticketing is not yet available for this journey." If I dig deeper it can manage PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains) to FAL. Does this mean there is no "inter-region" smart ticketing?

For somebody with English as a second language the whole business of split ticketing (presumably you can have smart split tickets) might be asking a bit much. The getting to Reading bit should be relatively easy?

I noticed two parts (of the same set?) in Eastleigh works on Saturday. Does this mean something is happening?
342  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: Booking cycle on train Bristol to Paddington on: September 19, 2022, 06:51:36
Bear in mind a booked space does not ensure the space is not rammed full of luggage.
343  Journey by Journey / Thames Valley Branches / Re: Reading Green Park on: September 12, 2022, 07:27:34
It was busy down at the Green Park bridge yesterday, as I also had a check on the progress (?).

Are they going to remove one strip of tactile paving? I can forsee confusion otherwise. Can't understand the emergency exits, from the bridge it looks like you have a long ramp followed by steps, not exactly wheelchair friendly. It might all look sensible from another angle.
