376  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Railway History and related topics / Railing against restrictions on: July 14, 2022, 07:11:34
I liked this article for the photograph, assuming it was 1978 or later wasn't the dress somewhat retro?

I think there will be members who lament the loss of guards vans, last one I used was on the Brockenhurst - Lymington line.

https://www.cyclinguk.org/cycle-magazine/travellers-tales-railing-against-restrictions

As you would expect from me, I think there is scope for more (quantity) sensible bike provision on trains. I am quite happy with the SWR» (South Western Railway - about) side-facing tip-up seats provision, gives a tolerable dual use-space without too much loss of seating. The GWR (Great Western Railway) adaptations that sometimes appear on the Gatwick and Basingstoke lines seem to commit a lot of space that is little used for the number of seats lost.

From the title I wondered what the Conservative MP (Member of Parliament) was doing, but I think there is an "o" in his name!

This all to common nowadays, apart from on the railway; Swindon outlet, Reading Oracle, Portsmouth Gunwharf Quays spring to mind.

near Reading FC(resolve)‡'s Madejski Stadium

Will be a nice job for Thames Valley Police sheparding the fans through Green Park Village and the Business Park to the Stadium. Bet the residents will soon be complaining about that.

This might be of interest to some.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/economy/inflationandpriceindices/articles/usingtransactionlevelrailfaresdatatotransformconsumerpricestatisticsuk/2022-06-28

They say "If we had used these data and methods between February 2019 and February 2022, there would have been negligible impact on the headline rate for CPIH and CPI, but our understanding of what was driving price changes in this category would have been substantially improved."

Not sure I understand "It does not retail." has this been over-shortened to the point of unintelligibility?

The South West "or example we see that the South West is showing the highest level of inflation of all the regions. In this region, rail inflation is 4.5% higher in September 2020 than January 2019, and 9% higher by December 2021. By further inspecting the elementary aggregate indices for the South West, the main driver of this inflation is mostly because of a gradual increase in the price of advance fares (that are unregulated) in this region."

When I went by earlier in the week they were doing some "landscaping", well planting at any rate. The plants might die before it opens?

I'm not sure whether the choice of the word 'Collision' in place of 'Accident'

Possibly something to do with "They encourage media, among other things, to avoid using the word “accident” – “crash” or “collision” not carrying the same association with chance" from https://road.cc/content/news/road-traffic-collision-reporting-guidelines-launched-283429.

If it is, it might suggest the Government is listening even if most of the press still isn't. Possibly input from the new National Active Travel Commsiioner?

Maybe bridge strikes can be a job for the new Road Safety Investigation Branch (RSIB)

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/government-launches-countrys-first-ever-investigation-branch-focused-on-road-safety

But might be too mundane for a body whose remit includes "provide real insight into how new technologies – such as self-driving and electric vehicles – can be rolled out on our roads".

386  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Catch The Bus month, 2022 on: June 24, 2022, 06:51:30
My issue with shopping trolleys is when they are used as battering rams, by a minority, and not always of advanced years.

"On trains and buses?" Not had the bag problem on trains, there are plenty of other issues for non-folding bikes there.

On the evidence of last weekend, there is no longer (?) the bag problem on the Southampton - Cowes jet foils as they now have bike racks.

Part of my issue that the bike is effectively a mobility aid for me.
387  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Catch The Bus month, 2022 on: June 23, 2022, 09:25:32
... and shopping trolleys?

Sorry it is a red rag thing for me.

Hopefully "inclusive and accessible form of transport" will be meaningful and we can get past the stupid business of folded bikes have to be put in a bag. WHY?

I am afraid it is now Probably, or even Possibly, after having been abused for offering in the past.
