61  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: A new one ! on: January 03, 2024, 07:28:30
Possibly a case of:

More trees than usual.......
62  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Re: Small railway footbridge takes longer to build than Empire State Building on: January 03, 2024, 07:25:35
Will this also sort out/remove the "temporary" sewer pipe on the footpath of the road bridge?

Should get support from one of the MPs (Member of Parliament) who is partial to using private/executive jets. If he is still around.
64  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Infrastructure problems in Thames Valley causing disruption elsewhere - ongoing, since Oct 2014 on: January 03, 2024, 07:19:34
Was extremely gusty earlier - only for a couple of hours - but I'm not surprised it's brought multiple trees down.

And with saturated ground there is less support for the trees root system.
65  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: How is your bike navigation? on: January 01, 2024, 07:53:29
Apologies Richard, probably reveals that I am a throwback that uses paper maps.

I think the most important thing is government commitment, which is lacking from the current administration and I am not sure would be there in a succeeding one.

Wish I felt I was doing more than turning the electricity meter round.

Have childhood memories of MLJ. Am I correct in remembering it had low platforms and they brought steps to train doors? Seems improbable, probably childhood memory running wild or short legs at that edge?

They would have trouble using the old station at Llanidloes.

CycleStreets, Kamoot, OpenCycleMap, but possibly not Google.

Google are trying (?) to improve things in London https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2023-12-29/google-goog-maps-for-cyclists-transport-for-london-tfl-to-boost-service?srnd=premium-uk

At least TfL» (Transport for London - about) has some infra, not sure how successful in other places.

The experts acknowledge it is not easy, but the London Cycling Campaign gives Google cycle routing a firm thumbs down.
70  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Call for rail fare simplification on: December 28, 2023, 06:55:05
My concern with this is that there is some flexibility in the existing system which might be lost in any "simplification".
71  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture Overseas / Re: Could a direct high-speed train between Switzerland and London soon be a reality on: December 25, 2023, 12:01:51
I noticed next to my first link "How to behave on a Swiss train" https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/society/swiss-train-etiquette/44854438 and how many Swiss would travel to UK (United Kingdom) more than once by train as I think you could say that our etiquette does not match their standards.

Boarding a train in Switzerland for the UK (United Kingdom) would therefore involve both security and passport controls similar to those required at airports – and new checkpoints and terminal facilities to be built at the appropriate Swiss stations.
This would obviously be an issue at UK end.

Sleeper trains through the Channel Tunnel?
73  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: So what's a biodiversity unit - can I get a job in one? on: December 22, 2023, 06:49:30
But what about the newts?
74  Journey by Journey / Thames Valley Branches / Re: Reading Green Park on: December 21, 2023, 07:07:26
And now on the Beeb https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c802d1e9g7wo

The buses are going to be hourly, but the trains are half hourly. Do they even meet the alternate trains, or is this another could do better of inter-modal travel.
