826  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The West - but NOT trains in the West / Re: 24th November 1940 on: November 25, 2020, 07:12:12
You don't get reporting of that quality in the national and regional press now.
827  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Campaigns for new and improved services / Re: New Treasury Green Book - Effect on Rail Projects outside London and South East on: November 23, 2020, 08:45:23
Not to be confused with the NHS Green Book https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/immunisation-against-infectious-disease-the-green-book

Which might be of interest for completely different reasons at this time. As it was last updated 2 September 2014 there is likely to be nothing immediately exciting about our current concerns.

How nice to hear of a local authority with a positive "can do" attitude.
Anyway Mr Page knows better?

Another example of British obsession with secrecy? What is the need for keeping this "technical" issue confidential? It does not exactly expose state of the art technology to competitors. More like the case of trying to obscure management ineptitude.
830  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Slough cycle superhighway on: November 19, 2020, 07:18:02
A BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) article https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-berkshire-54985531
says that Slough BC is thinking about a cycle superhighway from Huntercombe to the town central. I get the impression that there is some very expensive commercial real estate along the route, perhaps they have already spoken to the Slough Trading Estate. Not sure how much they will get from their ?2.5 million.

Have cycled some of the way from the town centre, and the first obvious pinch point to my mind will be the bridge of the Windsor branch.
831  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: Parking bikes and cars on: November 19, 2020, 06:56:43
All very well, but you have to be fairly brave to cycle into town to get to the cycle parking. Vastern Road roundabout is a known hazard area for cycling, and the new development on the Southern Electric site isn't overly bike friendly. In many respects Reading puts the cart before the horse with respect to cycling.
832  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Megabus £1 mondays. on: November 19, 2020, 06:46:44
Cheap fares Monday. Will Monday and Friday be the new "off peak"?
833  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Wokingham's present from Network Rail - a new siding on: November 17, 2020, 06:55:23
Excuse my eyeballs, but I can't make out sufficient detail, are those sleepers suitable for third rail?
834  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / ?2 billion package to create new era for cycling and walking - Tranche 2 on: November 13, 2020, 09:59:15
So Tranche 2, badged as providing

?School Streets?, where streets around schools are closed to motorists at school times
low-traffic neighbourhoods (LTNs (Low Traffic Neighbourhood)), where residential side streets are closed to through traffic to stop rat-running
    segregated cycle lanes
    pedestrian improvements

Will be interesting to see how it turns out.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/175-million-more-for-cycling-and-walking-as-research-shows-public-support

Have trouble getting my head round Reading's allocation after their abysmal performance in Round 1.

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/emergency-active-travel-fund-local-transport-authority-allocations

Not sure the changes in this "Strengthened advice on consultation and engagement."

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/reallocating-road-space-in-response-to-covid-19-statutory-guidance-for-local-authorities

And slightly hidden, the public opinion survey

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/public-attitudes-towards-traffic-and-road-use

Presumably to encourage some local authorities to have a bit more spine.
835  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Wokingham's present from Network Rail - a new siding on: November 12, 2020, 06:51:01
More activity than Reading Green Park. The last few times I have been down there, not a sign of the workers. Compared with the large multi-storey building next to the down line it is snails pace (if that isn't insulting to snails).
836  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Railway bridges struck by road vehicles - merged topic, ongoing discussion on: November 10, 2020, 06:52:11
Unlike lorries I don't think there is any requirement for the height of vans to be marked/known by drivers?

not all healthcare facilities have the required level of refrigeration. This is colder than normal vaccine requirements, apparently.

He said that logistical problems with the vaccine would need to be tackled, as it has been reported that it requires storage at −70?C. ?That is not necessarily routinely available in most health centres even in the UK (United Kingdom), let alone globally.?

Residents of Wimbledon used to make a tidy sum from this for a few weeks of the year. Could also make more if you went away and rented out your house.

The whole bay from Southbourne around to Studland
Cycling from Christchurch to Poole is enjoyable (Prohibited during daylight hours July and August). Recently "enhanced" by the view of out of work cruise liners off-shore. Best with a following east wind, Bromptons can have problems if there is too much sand on the path. Used to feature on inter-war railway posters.Recommended.
