1  All across the Great Western territory / Looking forward - after Coronavirus to 2045 / Re: Planning for restoration of services on: June 05, 2020, 06:53:19
At the moment Great Western are not allocating any actual seat reservations. However as you can book well in advance and the policy has only been in force for about a month it means there are still a few reservations showing.

The system is supposed to be turned off so nothing is showing.
2  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Worcester to Hereford (inc. Malvern) - no trains left? on: April 05, 2020, 21:57:00

But if things are that tricky, presumably you could switch out all of the boxes except at each end, and run a shuttle from Shrub Hill to Hereford with a WM five-car unit.
[/quote]

None of the signal boxes between Worcester and Hereford can be switched out.  Hewwick and Newlands control level crossings.  Malvern Wells and Ledbury operate points.
3  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: ‘Lives depend’ on people staying at home as five bus drivers die on: April 05, 2020, 19:37:07
Actually the metro quotes the mayor incorrectly.  He actually says bus workers in his tweet.  This would include anybody working for a bus company.

4  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: FirstGroup plans to “maximise substantial returns to shareholders” says RMT on: April 03, 2020, 21:20:31
Well it has been 7 years since the last dividend.  So while they intend to maximise returns to shareholders I don't think they will be getting anything anytime soon !
5  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Cotswold Line - 2019 cancellation and amendments log on: August 26, 2019, 12:50:45
Planned bank holiday amendments, well planned in that they were booked to be a Turbo today, but not a 2-car one.  Not sure why.

Running extra trains up from the West Country probably. Bank holidays are more like Sunday demand wise from Cornwall
6  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway since September 2017 - ongoing discussion on: August 26, 2019, 12:42:19
None of the short forms today, of which there are very few anyway thankfully, are on routes where 10-car trains currently run, so I’m at a loss as to why crew shortage has been attributed as the reason.

Its one of those reason which on the face of it sound wrong but when explained fully make sense !  Because of the train crew shortages yesterday sets were out of place.  I believe Stoke Gifford had too many sets and North Pole not enough.  So services started from Paddington were short formed by splitting a 10 car.

So yes train crew shortages but from yesterday.
7  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway since September 2017 - ongoing discussion on: August 25, 2019, 21:42:05
The most exasperating thing about all this is it’s hard to pin who is responsible for the continued shortage of crew across the rail network; particularly on weekends. Is it the train company, the unions, the dft even British Rail?

All I do know is there seems to be little urgency to sort it as it’s being going on for years.

Pritvatisation takes a large part of the blame in my book.  Previously drivers were a common resource working for one company.  Splitting into myriad different companies is inherently inefficient.

Great Western have a tiny depot in Weymouth so when short of crew a train has to be cancelled.  Most of the time South West Railway will have a spare drive who could have covered the work in British Rail days.  So a driver or guard are available just not the right one.

When new trains are introduced into an area it means a large part of the workforce for the Train Operating Company need training.  Ideally you would recruit extra drivers for 18 months but that is not a realistic option.  So you have to rely on overtime working which is fine for most of the year but there inevitable pinch points, such as a bank holiday, when you will not get sufficient volunteers so trains have to be cancelled.

Don't forget Great Western have a huge increase in service in December and the staff have to be trained.  Usually for the peak summer season you would stop the training for 6 to 8 weeks.  However this is not really an option with a hard deadline of timetable change in December.

8  All across the Great Western territory / Meet the Manager / Re: Qn.3 for Mark Hopwood: Trolley service on IETs on: August 07, 2019, 08:59:22
For me the problem with the trolley is that it is over complicated.  Hot water comes from urn which has to be plugged in to heat up.  So if it has not been turned on you have to wait 20 minutes so the trolley can't operate until then.

Also when you run out of water the urn is so heavy that it cannot be carried so the trolley has to return to the urn location which also takes time and causes delay doing so.

Why not have a couple of portable urns like used in first class.  Then when one runs out a member of staff could go and fill one up again while the trolley continues to operate.  (Perhaps the Train Manager could do this ?)

9  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Seat Reservations turned on part way through journey on: July 03, 2019, 20:25:32
I was on the 16:36 Paddington to Cheltenham today. It was a short formed 5 car IET (Intercity Express Train) and was full and standing as we left Paddington.  The seat reservations were all off and I sat in an empty seat (I was first on that carriage so had a choice).

As we approached Reading the seat reservations were still off, but as we were about to leave the person next to me was asked to move because he sitting in another passenger's reserved seat. I looked up and sure enough the seat reservations were now on my seat was reserved from Paddington to Gloucester but the adjacent seat was reserved from Reading to Stroud. Our carriage was once again full so I hope the person next to me found another seat, but since the catering trolley was still stranded due to overcrowding I doubt it.

I am not sure how I would have reacted had it been my seat that the new passenger required, after all i had arrived in plenty of time to find an unreserved seat, but was not afforded the opportunity by GWR (Great Western Railway). This did seem to be very bad practice.

There were only reservations for A to E so does not appear to be short formed.

10  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: June 06, 2019, 10:41:49
A few 5 vice 9 IET (Intercity Express Train) services for the morning peak again this morning. Now Hitachi now have the full fleet to draw on, what assurance can be given that they can supply the number required once the much enhanced timetable starts in December when this is still happening on the existing timetable?

But are they all in use ?  I haven't seen 800001 or 800002 in passenger service yet.
11  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: National Railcard discounts - ongoing discussion, no longer date specific on: April 28, 2017, 13:46:58
Unofficial in that it is not an valid easement at all ..unofficial in that some staff did it anyway to avoid the abuse which lead to more abuse for the staff who followed the rules, the train is at 0959 the railcard is valid after 10am so by selling a ticket for the 0959 discounted with the network card is not valid and by boarding train with said ticket said person would be travelling without a valid ticket and could be subject to a penalty fare

i'm not really sure why you took what i wrote and that lead you to believe that you could board at grately  with an andover ticket ... so without a valid ticket... struggling with your logic on that one i'm afraid!

As a railcard holder you really should be aware of the terms and conditions and its validity (you signed to say that you were)  below is a full list of legitimate valid easements for your railcard along with the t&c's for said product

http://www.network-railcard.co.uk/using-your-railcard/travel-times/

http://www.network-railcard.co.uk/help/railcard-terms-conditions/

Some years ago the T&C of the Network card were changed from not being valid on trains SCHEDULED to depart before 10 o'clock to not being valid on trains departing before 10 o'clock.  This means that the Network card is valid on any train that departs at 10 o'clock and later.  If the 0959 departs 1 minute late then your Network railcard ticket would be valid.

Network Railcard discounts are not valid on tickets for travel before 10.00hrs, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). This time restriction applies to all types of tickets.

Above is quoted from the Network Railcard T&C.

I think it might also be for the in cab CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) for DOO (Driver-Only Operation (that is, trains which operate without carrying a guard)).
13  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture Overseas / Re: Different Height Doors on Swiss EMU on: February 17, 2017, 10:29:37
From 2012 consolidated text of the the PRM (Persons with Reduced Mobility) TSI:
Quote
4.2.2.4.2. Exterior doors
...
External  doors  shall  be  painted  or  marked  on  the  outside  in  a  way that  gives  a  contrast  to  the  rest  of  the  vehicle  body-side
...

There is also this, from the 2014 draft of a revison (apprently still work in progress):
Quote
4.2.2.3.2 Exterior doors
...
All Exterior passenger doorways shall be marked on the outside in a way that gives a contrast to the vehicle body-side surrounding them.
...

There isn't anything about goods or staff access doors not being painted like passenger ones, which might help. As would common sense, of course.

My reading is that this makes the livery on 43003 to be against the 2012 rules, but allowed again from the 2014 rules, as the guard / train manager / bicycle door isn't contrasting.   Commonly accepted (or rather commonly acknowledged) that the who set couldn't be retro under modern requirements.

I think the intention has always been for passenger doors to be contrasting.  The 2014 simply make that explicit.  AFAIK (as far as I know) the doors on power cars have never had a contrasting livery.
14  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Train Operating Companies v Trade Unions dispute - ongoing discussion on: January 09, 2017, 20:07:29
I would dread to think what would happen if a driver was taken ill between Paddington and Reading with no other crew. The train would be brought to a halt by the cab safety devices but with no announcements how long would it be before passengers would attempt to get out of the train?

Trains have run between Paddington and Reading with only a driver on board for over 20 years. All the turbo services do so.

One thing that did strike me as interesting is the "first station / last station" business

Quote
If you are using a Season Ticket, daily Zonal Ticket, or another area based Ticket such as a concessionary pass, ranger or rover in conjunction with another Ticket and the last station at which one Ticket is valid and the first station that the other Ticket is valid are the same, then the train does not need to call at that station for your combination to be valid.

So under the old scheme, a London to Oxford season ticket and a Didcot to Swindon single would have been fine on a train not calling at Didcot - for example, someone who live in Oxford and commuted from there to London but was going out partying (lucky chap!) one evening in Swindon would have been fine on any train, but must now catch one that calls at Didcot.  I wonder if that's an intentional tightening ...

I think you are reading too much into it.  For the season ticket the last station from which it is valid is Didcot so the combination will still be valid.
