796  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: No problems with the Night Riviera sleeper - December 2014 onwards on: February 20, 2017, 21:34:49
We travelled back on the 09:47 which arrived into Paddington a couple of minutes early, but it's not quite as relaxing as the sleeper  Wink

I hope the 0947 was on a different day. I'd want at least a day to explore the area before I returned.

I have not had a problem on any of those trips - apart from on one occasion someone trying to claim my berth, but it turned out they were a day early!

Earlier this month at Schipol two young ladies were turned away from my flight at the gate because they were a month early. The ticket barriers into airside let them through apparently.
797  All across the Great Western territory / Looking forward - after Coronavirus to 2045 / Re: Intercity Express Programme (IEP) - ongoing discussion on: February 17, 2017, 23:08:26
Many years ago my dad taught me how to wire a plug. The first two letters of blue are BL which stands for Bottom Left and the first two letters of brown are BR (British Rail(ways)) which stands for Bottom Right. The other wire (green / yellow) if it is there, obviously goes in the one remaining pin.

I once watched a video advertised on the Great Western Coffee Shop Website. Thankfully I was at home at the time.

I was very shocked. It has no sound.  Grin

14/16. Didn't know Mile End. Too far east for me. Moorgate was one I should have got.
801  All across the Great Western territory / Your rights and redress / Re: TVMs not issuing prebooked tickets on: February 05, 2017, 20:13:02
I buy most of my non season tickets via the GWR (Great Western Railway) website and collect from TVMs (Ticket Vending Machine), my default station is Taplow but I've never had any problems collecting them from TVMs at other stations, however despite using the same card to pay for/collect them I'm always asked to input the code.

I buy most of my tickets using the GWR website or app and usually collect at a Southern or SWT (South West Trains) station. I always have to input the collection code. Using SWT website and collecting at SWT station is the same. However booking from Southern website and collecting from Southern station I did not have to input code. I've not done that for a while so don't know if that's still the case.

American Express payment problems.
Unfortunately a software fault means we are unable to accept payments via American Express on our ticket machines at present.
Software engineers have investigated the cause of the problem and a fix is now available. This is being installed on affected ticket machines across our network, and all machines should have received the update and be able to accept American Express cards by Friday 3 February.

This is also affecting customers who wish to collect tickets using their American Express card. If you have a prepaid ticket for collecting and have booked it using an American Express card, please visit a ticket office who will be able print off tickets for you.

We are sorry for any problems this may cause.

803  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: Unhelpful Announcements on: January 25, 2017, 21:44:59
I had my first trip on one of the new cl.387's yesterday evening from Hayes into Paddington (and very impressed I was). At the first stop (Southall) the announcement states "due to short platforms, the doors in the coach 8 will not open here" followed by "this is coach x of 8". Presumably each coach tells you what it's number in the consist is, but I couldn't be bothered moving to the next carriage to confirm!

This also happens on many SWT (South West Trains) and Southern trains. Very handy when trains split en route or at short platforms.

Whether 'chaos', 'meltdown' and 'denial' are accurate will become clearer in time I'm sure...

Is there an English translation for this article? M&E?
805  All across the Great Western territory / Smoke and Mirrors / Re: TOCs' Performance on: January 16, 2017, 23:20:14
I renewed my SWT (South West Trains) annual travelcard just after Christmas and got a £239 discount for Service disruptions. This was for just a 6 month period covering about 30 disruptions. When I replaced my season ticket earlier in 2016 on one of the 3 or 4 occasions that the mag stripe failed, I also received cash back for a long list of service disruptions. That one was for about £100.
806  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Heathrow to Slough on: January 16, 2017, 23:09:13
The bus route may have changed.  But the last time I caught the bus from T5 to Slough (which was the number 81), it pulled into the bus station right next to the station (although other side of the track to the HI Express and I expect you can't use the station bridge without a tciket).
The 81 does not go to Heathrow Central or Terminal 5. It runs from Hounslow via the Bath Road to Slough bus station avoiding the airport. It is a TfL» (Transport for London - about) route (red bus) run by London United. T5 to Slough would probably be a blue bus run by First.
807  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Hayes & Harlington - poor CIS due to Crossrail on: January 15, 2017, 13:19:13
You would also have seen the large permanent NR» (Network Rail - home page) / GWR (Great Western Railway) signs clearly stating that London trains depart from platform 4 and Reading / Oxfords from platform 3 - and as you found out these signs can be wrong. This weekend 1, 2, 4 were in use and 3 was not. Why were these signs not covered up?
No I didn't see them, I used to use Hayes station a lot a few years ago so I knew which platform to go to (or so I thought).

Actually you are damned lucky that the driver waited for you to run over the bridge. Many drivers do not wait especially on the Connects.
Fortunately the train was still on its approach, pulling in as I came off the bridge.
808  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: What can and can't you watch on your phone / tablet in public? on: January 15, 2017, 00:45:18
I have inadvertently watched questionable content on trains in the past. I transfer TV shows from my Freeview recorder to my tablet to watch on the way home from work. These are mostly comedies or drama. On a few occasions I have been caught out by unexpected nudity or sex scenes and I have had to take the decision to switch to another programme. It's very embarrassing because you don't know if any one behind you has noticed.
809  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Hayes & Harlington - poor CIS due to Crossrail on: January 15, 2017, 00:29:56
I was at Hayes and Harlington Station a few hours ago to get the 2151 to Paddington. Wandering on to Platform 4 from Station Approach I looked around to see how I was doing for time. The only screen I could see was to the left, about 30-60 seconds walk away, totally illegible from where I was. Remembering CJB666's original post I backtracked the way I came in to see if I had missed a screen anywhere. I had not. Going back onto the platform I became aware of shouting from the opposite platform. The friends of a woman near me were yelling at her to get over the footbridge because the train was pulling in on platform 2 instead. We both had to run over the footbridge to catch this train.

I think the entrance to platform 4 from the road bridge is still open so there would be departure screens upstairs showing the correct platforms but there are no screens from the Station approach entrance. I was lucky to catch that train tonight.

Edited the train time from 2251 to the correct time of 2151
810  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Shall we meet in Birmingham or Malaga? on: January 15, 2017, 00:09:03
Depends on where you started from.

Newcastle - Saves money
Birmingham - Spends money when you could have spent none.

I hope the two friends split the air fares evenly.
