811  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Heathrow to Slough on: January 13, 2017, 21:00:48
You certainly aren't allowed to do this on NatEX coaches....they have dearer fares to places like airports & I've tried to exit at one with a ticket further & I got a right dressing down! The driver thought about not letting me off, but finally changed his mind.

I've successfully done that a few times. I had to make the outward journey from West Drayton to Victoria by train/tube then NatEx coach to the West or South West. Coming back, get off early at Heathrow. Saves a lot of money and I was never challenged.
812  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: Unhelpful Announcements on: January 13, 2017, 20:31:06
Recently I found myself making a connection at Reading station, a station which I am not at all familiar with having previously only passed through it on a train. A few moments before my train arrived, the familiar announcement sounded signifying that I needed to be at the front of the train for the quiet coach; it was only then that I realised that being unfamiliar with the geography of the station, I had no idea which direction the train would be coming from and therefore where the front or rear of the train would be.

At Guildford there are signs on the opposite platforms roof that say "Portsmouth End" and "London End" with arrows pointing in those directions. Do any other stations do that?
813  Journey by Journey / To Oxford, Didcot and Reading from West / Re: Melksham to Oxford - suggestions for the Didcot change on: January 09, 2017, 22:46:02
Typo - Catching rather than Cathing, but good otherwise.

What's this? ChrisB offering spelling lessons?  Grin
814  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Hayes & Harlington - poor CIS due to Crossrail on: January 07, 2017, 21:28:18
Interesting. I don't plan to create a departure board myself, I was just curious about some of the specs. Sorry if the wording of my last post suggested otherwise.
815  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Hayes & Harlington - poor CIS due to Crossrail on: January 07, 2017, 09:27:17
My understanding is that the feed that supplies CIS (Customer Information System) with next train arrival & departures information is publicly available if you know who to ask to get the code.

I have the codes for many stations (including Hayes and Harlington), for the "WebTIS" screens - that's not the LED displays on the platform but the TV monitors.  There's a number of different formats available including the beautifully named "detailed summary" - sample below.   If you get to setting up a screen, it shouldn't be a problem getting the feed (that applies to most but not all other GWR (Great Western Railway) served stations too).

I like that display. I haven't seen any others at stations that show the arrival times for the following stations or the Last Report.
Out of curiosity, how many locations do you know of locally that use this and do you have issues with screen burn? I'm thinking along the lines of the old plasma display boards at Paddington that were replaced with LED displays about 10 years ago.
816  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Paddington 4G on Platform 1 on: January 05, 2017, 22:23:06
I used to have the same issue at Waterloo with Vodafone on Plats 1 - 4. In fact I may still do, I don't tend to check any more.

I used to be with EE and leaving Paddington there was always a drop out zone in the Ladbroke Grove area. I remember a friend on another network telling me he had the same issue there.
817  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Rolling stock now oldest since 2001 ... GWR oldest diesels of the lot! on: January 03, 2017, 21:46:52
Not sure why it would be sensible to use an intercity service to shuttle people from Slough/Maidenhead/Twyford to London or Reading when Crossrail will be set up precisely to do that?

If you're an MP (Member of Parliament) looking to retain your Henley-on-Thames seat, might it make sense for you to show your constituents how much you care by winning them a nonstop service to Twyford that connects with the branch shuttle?   I've spotted that many current evening commuters prefer to catch the 17:06 and change rather than wait for the direct 17:12, or catch the 18:05 and change rather than wait for the direct 18:10 (I have not travelled on the 17:12 or 18:10, so no comment on number who prefer the direct train.

The MP for Henley now is John Howell. I've no idea if he has any post in Govt. Before him it was Boris Johnson who replaced Michael Heseltine.

For those who were scratching their heads and wondering where did that come from?, or have I seen it before? - the first post in this thread was an AP piece from October, when the ORR» (Office of Rail and Road formerly Office of Rail Regulation - about) data were released. How and why has it reappeared two months later in so many places? ....

Not two months ago. It was 1 year and two months ago.
819  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Name the Stations from the vowels on: December 26, 2016, 10:16:39
I like the idea of naming the tubs.  Grin

The first is Bank, the second I assume is Angel, don't know the third (I was going to say Waterloo, but that has an E in it).

In GWR (Great Western Railway) land, the answer has to be M..ELK..sham.  Smiley

I think there's a misprint in the Londonist's article that I quoted ... I don't believe the shortest escalator's in zone 1.

Correct. The station is in Zones 2&3
820  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Travel by train, Boxing day 2016 on: December 26, 2016, 09:59:04

821  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: 4 GWR coaches at Doncaster for power doors. on: December 24, 2016, 18:07:56
Just out of interest, are they likely to be installing retention tanks in the toilets?
822  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: 4 GWR coaches at Doncaster for power doors. on: December 24, 2016, 09:54:10
That testing must be extensive if it'll be 9 months before going back in service! Would it not be quicker to build a whole new train?

824  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Christmas/New Year 2016 Engineering Work on: December 21, 2016, 22:35:47
Changing from the Northern to the Jubilee Line at London Bridge today I heard a long recorded announcement about GWR (Great Western Railway) at Paddington being closed during this period - please use Ealing Broadway. Heathrow - please use Piccadilly line. Hopefully these announcements are being played at other underground stations as well.
