This trains delays seem to get dumped down to either a signal failure or non maintenance of a flail strip.
What the hell is a flail strip?

An area of up to 5 metres from the running rail which is clear of foliage (so it doesn't "flail" any services passing through that area). This is distinct from "gauge", which (I believe) is more to do with hard structures.

Somehow, I wouldn't want to be flailed by a bridge.  Smiley

I must admit, I was secretly hoping that one would pop out of the rear cab after the doors closed...  Grin

Resurrecting the thread - the last couple of days I've ended up in seats that have been facing the rear 1st class section on the Bourne End - Paddington turbo, and I have been amazed at the number of people who got on at Slough and immediately piled into 1st class without even a glance at standard.

Have I missed a memo about 1st being de-classified?

Tip-up seats to allow for bicycles are a fair solution when applied to off-peak travel, but I could envision some raised blood-pressure during peak commuting time - 2-3 seats tipped up out of use to accommodate a bicycle, while the cyclist is sat in another...

Ah, the joys of defining a one-size-fits-all carriage layout!

What's been bugging me lately has been where bikes are pushed through the narrow bit between the columns and the buffers at the end of platforms 11/12 at Paddington, rather than going round the wider bit. It's tight enough with people coming the other way without throwing a Brompton into the mix.

Mumble, mumble, grumble.

(Must remember to turn grumpy old man mode off when I get home on Friday Smiley)

81  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Trespass incident between Paddington and Reading causing problems (6/10/2010) on: October 07, 2010, 09:30:21
To add insult to injury the 17:18 overtook us on the fast lines at Southall, almost empty.

That was because a lot of the people who had crushed on it had been thinking that it was the Henly train, so when the info screen came on and the driver announced that it was first stop Maidenhead, the Slough passengers rushed off.

FGW (First Great Western) does not demonstrate any interest at all in protecting First Class accommodation on Turbos between Padd & Rdg.  It's particulalry bad between Padd & Slough where anyone and everyone uses it.  How often do you get a ticket examination on these services?  FGW is happy to take your First Class fare, but they do little if anything to ensure you get the service provision you've paid for on Padd - Rdg Turbos.

To be fair, I have seen a FGW conductor squeeze his way through a packed 7:31 and eject people from 1st class. Admittedly it did make things even more crowded in the vestibule where I was standing...

Saying that, I would prefer to see either more ticket checking or have the 1st class section on Turbos replaced with a standard class layout. Neither are very likely though.
