I spotted this image on NR» 's twitter feed, which reminded me of similar pictures on the GWSR blog: It's new daggerboards being painted. These will replace the many that have rotted or been damaged over the decades!
In this modern age when off-site construction is all the rage on cost efficiency. Is there a good reason why these are being cut and painted on site? Are they not all standard sizes? Since the station was rebuilt in the 1930s I imagine that the dagger boards were hand made to fit the spaces.

Cycling through Shute Shelve Tunnel is brilliant! Erm ... no, actually, it's not brilliant - it's pitch black, in the middle. You'll need headlamps, torches, lanterns, candles, canaries in cages ... ...... The approach signs state that lights are required and ask cyclists to walk through the tunnel. In practice it is a great ride if the tunnel is clear. You can see if it is clear since other people are silhouetted against the end of the tunnel.

Yes, Winscombe Millennium Green - or Winscombe Station, if you prefer. According to the Strawberry Line website everything you see here is original - a remarkable survival if so. It is indeed. There was a major row when the Victorian kissing gates on an access footpath were replaced with modern galvanised steel ones. If you are in the area then Sandford Station is open off the Strawberry Line at weekends with various exhibits. (I live in Winscombe and have worked on the Green).

Split off from http://www.passenger.chat/25230 - grahameAs an aside, why is the explanation for "XC▸ " styled as "(Cross Country franchise trains (now run by Arriva))"?
Why not simply "(CrossCountry Trains)" seeing as that's their name?
"Cross Country franchise trains" is pretty poor grammar.
Also "now run by Arriva" implies this is a new development. Arriva have run the franchise since 2007. So why the "now"?!
It bugs me every time I see it.
It is as annoying as the road sign that states 'New Roal Layout' that has been up for so long the paint is peeling off.

I have always been intrigued as to why the east portal is nowhere near the same size. I guess that is because the railway emerges into a narrow rock cutting and unlikely to be seen by most.
It is early PR▸ . There was a strong campaign against Box Tunnel due to the perceived danger of its length and gradient. Brunel built the Western entrance this size because it could be seen from the stage coaches on the Bath / London road where Grahame took the photograph.

I have read the BBC» report of the proposal and it logically makes sense. I am sure the finances will end up costing significantly more than £90M.
Something certainly needs doing in Bristol. In terms of route it is a reasonable starter as you cannot do the whole city in the first steps. It will be reasonably complimentary to the megabus network which does go out to the East.
I give it no more than a 40% chance of continuing and hope to be proved wrong.
