If that comes off I will put £1,000 on Lord Lucan winning the Derby, riding Shergar.

I spotted this image on NR» (Network Rail - home page)'s twitter feed, which reminded me of similar pictures on the GWSR blog: It's new daggerboards being painted. These will replace the many that have rotted or been damaged over the decades!

In this modern age when off-site construction is all the rage on cost efficiency.  Is there a good reason why these are being cut and painted on site? Are they not all standard sizes?

Since the station was rebuilt in the 1930s I imagine that the dagger boards were hand made to fit the spaces.

Yes, I was exaggerating somewhat.  ;

I did think that your use of canaries was probably unnecessary since the rock is not coal bearing.

Cycling through Shute Shelve Tunnel is brilliant!  Grin

Erm ... no, actually, it's not brilliant - it's pitch black, in the middle.  You'll need headlamps, torches, lanterns, candles, canaries in cages ...  Roll Eyes

......

The approach signs state that lights are required and ask cyclists to walk through the tunnel.  In practice it is a great ride if the tunnel is clear.  You can see if it is clear since other people are silhouetted against the end of the tunnel.

I passed through on my way to Cheddar (and beyond!); I'd been wanting to cycle the Strawberry Line for some time.

It didn't disappoint!

It is a lovely ride.

Yes, Winscombe Millennium Green - or Winscombe Station, if you prefer. According to the Strawberry Line website everything you see here is original - a remarkable survival if so.

It is indeed.  There was a major row when the Victorian kissing gates on an access footpath were replaced with modern galvanised steel ones.

If you are in the area then Sandford Station is open off the Strawberry Line at weekends with various exhibits.

(I live in Winscombe and have worked on the Green).

Could be Winscombe, the layout of the millennium green looks like that at the end.

Split off from http://www.passenger.chat/25230 - grahame

As an aside, why is the explanation for "XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise))" styled as "(Cross Country franchise trains (now run by Arriva))"?

Why not simply "(CrossCountry Trains)" seeing as that's their name?

"Cross Country franchise trains" is pretty poor grammar.

Also "now run by Arriva" implies this is a new development. Arriva have run the franchise since 2007. So why the "now"?!

It bugs me every time I see it.

It is as annoying as the road sign that states 'New Roal Layout' that has been up for so long the paint is peeling off.

I see it now.

Western Urban & Rural Zones Legislature Executive.

I have always been intrigued as to why the east portal is nowhere near the same size. I guess that is because the railway emerges into a narrow rock cutting and unlikely to be seen by most.

It is early PR (Public Relations).  There was a strong campaign against Box Tunnel due to the perceived danger of its length and gradient.  Brunel built the Western entrance this size because it could be seen from the stage coaches on the Bath / London road where Grahame took the photograph.

If the problem is Covid self isolation then I would expect it to last for most of the week.

The only one I can find* that matches the picture visually is in Motherwell. Did you really go that far from home?

* by which I mean Google found for me, of course

Not that far stuving.

Middle of the UK (United Kingdom).

Sounds like Alton Towers then.
148  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Dan Norris says stop calling it WECA on: July 02, 2021, 17:59:33
CUBA (Counties that Used to Be Avon) is used within local government to mean Counties that Used To Be Avon so it cannot be used for WECA» (West of England Combined Authority - about) unless North Somerset joins.
149  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: another plan for Bristol trams PLEASE ALL READ on: July 01, 2021, 17:57:50
I have read the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) report of the proposal and it logically makes sense.  I am sure the finances will end up costing significantly more than £90M.

Something certainly needs doing in Bristol.  In terms of route it is a reasonable starter as you cannot do the whole city in the first steps.  It will be reasonably complimentary to the megabus network which does go out to the East.

I give it no more than a 40% chance of continuing and hope to be proved wrong.

"improved trolleys that keep hot things hot and cold things cold"

Off topic alert.

You remind me of the footballer (the story I was told has a name) who was given his first Thermos flask with that message about hot things hot, and cold things cold.   And at the training ground the next day, he proudly produced it - "I've got a lovely hot Pea and Ham soup for my starter in here, and Raspberry Ripple Ice Cream as my desert" ...

I thought of this story as well.
