Frequent visits for work in the past.  Very few this millennium.

Prior to 2011 when I split my time between Bristol and London I was amazed to find that a monthly 1st class season was less than 2 1st class anytime returns a week for 4 weeks, and was even better value in 5 week months.
168  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Tree felling on the St Ives branch causes local anger on: April 15, 2021, 10:21:34
The problem with ash trees is ash tree dieback.  There are requirements to clear infected (and nearby) trees.  I am surprised this was not mentioned but it would have spoilt a good story.  The estimate is that now it is established the UK (United Kingdom) will loose 80% of the ash trees.

Going via St Philips marsh

1)Is it available for passengers use?

2)if it is,
I think that it was not used due to congestion with sets going on or coming off the depot, although I don't know how many ECS (Empty Coaching Stock) trains use St Philips marsh nowadays.

This has been discussed on another forum, particularly with regard to XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) trains using the Rhubarb Loop and St Philips Marsh.  The conclusion was that it was not signalled for passenger trains and it would interfere with the working of the depot.

A beautifully staged picture.

Completely agree with you.

Meanwhile, in France, lawmakers are looking to ban all internal flights where a rail alternative exist and takes no more than two and a half hours.

From the Beeb website:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-56716708

Such a law here would preclude Exeter to Truro, but Redruth would be fine. I think the French could have a good idea with this if it spurs investment in rail, and isn't used to raise fares. And if it applies to the politicians too. I wonder how well it fits with the European ideals of free movement of people and trade, though.

It is domestic so no problems.  The Netherlands tried to ban Amsterdam - Brussels but that was ruled out as it was intra EU» (European Union - about).

Interestingly the original French proposal was to ban flights under 4 hours but this has been reduced to 2 hours.
173  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Lanes between Clevedon, Yatton, Nailsea, Claverham and Backwell opening on: April 07, 2021, 18:00:45
I have read the full order and it is very interesting.  The roads will be closed to through traffic but not bicycles or vehicles needing to visit properties (including pubs) on these lanes.
What stops someone who decides to use those lanes to go between, say, Backwell and Clevedon but calling at the pub en-route for a fast half-pint?

Dave

Nothing.

I am however worried if the COVID restrictions are going to be permanent as CfN thinks.

An excellent sample.

Went for a walk on the Mendips today.  The car parks at the popular places were very busy, where we parked we saw very few people.
177  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Stuck in a train overnight. on: March 22, 2021, 09:35:08
I have seen comments elsewhere that they did not have tickets and may have hidden when the train was checked.  How thorough should the search be when checking the train is empty?

I see that the acronym expansion of CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) uses less common words to explain the 'V'

Both my wife and I were asked if we were driving and told to wait for 15 minutes if so, but to leave immediately if we were a passenger.

I would also suggest keeping IET (Intercity Express Train) as an expandable, in view of the fact that most users of the site are guests.

Note that 'IET' is 'only' the GWR (Great Western Railway) brand name for the Hitachi Class 800 and 802. Known as 'Azuma (Brand name for Class 80x trains on LNER)' on LNER» (London North Eastern Railway - about)

I thought that originally IET was the name DfT» (Department for Transport - about) gave to the specification for the new trains as part of the IEP (Intercity Express Program / Project.).  Hitachi offered the At300 as class 80x and GWR kept the IET name while LNER rebranded them as Azura.
