Anyone have a source I’ve looked everywhere online.
2  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Biggest investment since the Victorians.... on: June 10, 2019, 10:29:39
I keep hearing and seeing GWR (Great Western Railway), NR» (Network Rail - home page) and others across the wider rail network trumpet that we are currently undergoing the largest investment since the Victorians. Well that was over one hundred years ago, what happened in the meantime? I know there was significant under-investment in rail infrastructure at certain points but money was spent, significant amounts of money for the time.

Does anyone have any detailed information showing the works/projects that were proposed for each control period since the demise of the private ventures collapse? Any other times of significant investment in the rail industry. Surely there was a period of huge investment after each world war?
3  Journey by Journey / London to South Wales / Re: GWR boss out of touch with its problems, says Labour MP on: February 15, 2019, 15:41:28
Count the number of times the head of Scots Rail has come out and publicly apologised for the issues that they are facing under the same circumstances. Then compare that to the number of times Mr Hopwood has done the same thing.

I fully appreciate the circumstances that GWR (Great Western Railway) are under from the engineering difficulties faced by NR» (Network Rail - home page) and the strategic decisions made by the DFT (Department for Transport). However, GWR's responsibility lies in its communications of the issues and mitigation of the issues. In those areas over the last few years, I believe it has been found wanting.

6  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Engineering Works - When were they advertised on: December 16, 2018, 23:01:55
Do you know when it was advertised II. It seems that PAX are not even getting the 6 weeks they were promised.

Here you go YKN, this is what took place today at Didcot:

Work on platform extensions were also taking place.

There must be a public record of when engineering works are booked into the timetable.

Thanks Timmer, however it doesnt actually say what engineering works are taking place nor does it show the published date. I know we are currently on a 6 week notice period for the Informed Passenger process but I would like to know if these works even managed those timescales.

Not sure YKN. All I do know is I booked tickets a few weeks back (Advance) and the times had since changed by a few minutes to allow a diverted Bristol train to travel in front of a WoE train that I’m travelling on because our train stops at Newbury and Pewsey.

I notice that Swindon is closed this weekend. Does anyone know what engineering works are taking place here this weekend.

Additionally, as the title suggests, is there anyway to see when the engineering works were booked into the timetable. I cant remember seeing this weekends changes advertised when i checked recently.

Thanks
10  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Great Western Main Line electrification - ongoing discussion on: December 02, 2018, 14:33:56

I wonder what the cost savings for all the structures not requiring the additional height?

My preference for DC (Direct Current) extensions would be to use overhead wires. The kit for OLE (Overhead Line Equipment, more often "OHLE") was in fact developed for DC, with the contact wire gauges of 107mm2 and 120mm2 being used for 550V and 750V tramways/LR. I imagine that 3rd rail extension costs would have tracked with OLE, still giving OLE a marginal advantage. It would need either dedicated stock or a second LV pantograph but would prepare the way for seamless 25kV conversion.

Another link is the use of 33kV supplies to the 750V substations. It seems that the only real difference in equipment specifications between 25kV and 33kV systems is the transformer turns ratio.

I would like to see progress in my lifetime.

Isn’t it to do with the power supply requirements? I.e. the the long length of the route would have required additional transformers every X miles instead of every Y miles?

As I've said before, being an 'old Southern' man, the unpopular
3rd rail did seem a lot less complicated.

Not said here before - that's your first post - welcome to the forum!   Grin

Also as an immigrant from third rail land, I really do look and wonder at all this string!

14  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: November 11, 2018, 16:09:08
Staff memo from Mark Hopwood, posted here as he seems unwilling to keep his passengers informed:

"Getting our new Class 800 and 802 Intercity Express trains into service has been far from plain sailing.  I recognise that there are still daily challenges when working with the IETs (Intercity Express Train) which are impacting customer experiences.  We're focused on resolving these problems and are working hard with Hitachi to solve them one by one.

I'm pleased to say that improvements to the on-board experience are coming very soon.  New labels for quiet carriages and bike storage have been agreed and will be fitted retrosepctively to our IET fleet, making it clearer where they should travel and helping colleagues give accurate information.

Opearational issues are also being addressed - we've now accepted more than half of the sets we've ordered, driver availability is improving as our driver training programme progresses, and problems with train formations will get better as our train plan settles."

Make of it what you will.

Why won’t any of the GWR (Great Western Railway) management make a public statement? Political pressure? Contractual pressure? I have read that all public statements requires the approval of all parties in the Rail Delivery Group but surely a public acceptance of issues PAX face is a better strategy?
15  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: November 10, 2018, 23:31:20
With the short forms still happening, 13 months after the introduction of the new trains and with the twitter help actually admitting that the shorts are due to staff training, do we know if there is an end in sight for the training?

Does anyone have an up to date timeline/programme for the IEP (Intercity Express Program / Project.) programme showing the introduction of new trains, when the staff training will finish, infrastructure upgrades etc...

You should see 800001 and 800002 on the network next week freeing up some more duties and by January shortforms should be at 1 or 2 a day due to stock shortage. All five car 802s are now in the UK (United Kingdom) however they are only slowly putting them onto lines and through Swindon there should be no HSTs (High Speed Train) by march excluding substitution and empty stock. HSTs will solely be diagramed onto B and H.

This time next month, excluding substitution and STP (Short Term Plan Diagrams) all services to and from Cheltenham should be Intercity Express operated, and the line will he the first to see full IET (Intercity Express Train) introduction.

From January there should only be 5 HST Diagrams to Wales and Bristol (possibly 4) and slowly going by March. No HSTs planned for Cotswolds for after January.

Thanks to the new timetable  now being postponed to December 3000, there will be more available units than required between February and December meaning that to see a short form it would be very rare.

That answers the carriage introduction but what about the training that is also sapping available stock?
