76  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: Theoretical Design For A New DMU For Portsmouth-Cardiff Services on: March 03, 2019, 03:12:12
5 car IETs (Intercity Express Train) should do.
Build some more 10 car (not 5+5) IETs, mechanically similar to and interchangeable with the present fleet but with a proper inter-city internal fit out.
Use these new inter-city IETs on the longer distance and more important GWR (Great Western Railway) services, and transfer some of the existing 5 car units to Cardiff-Portsmouth.

My well known objections to IETs are not primarily on engineering or technical grounds, but are due to the downgraded passenger experience on routes previously operated by proper inter-city trains.

I have little objection to additional full length IETs being built with proper inter-city internal arrangements, and cascading the shorter and lower specification units to secondary routes.
New IETs should be more affordable than the first lot.
Maintenance should be simplified if the new units are mechanically like the existing fleet, differing only in internal fittings, equipment and layout.
One type of train from the driving P.O.V. simplifying training and rostering.
Already approved by the various regulatory agencies, unlike a new design.

And how will they be cheaper?
What you gonna say to Bristol/Cheltenham/Cotswolds people who need shorter trains to provide service change?
Who is going to pay for the “intercity internal arrangements” and will it provide seating capacity improvements?

May 2019 - one more Cheltenham - Paddington (service, round trip or diagram?)

Let’s hope this is the 16:42 that was planned for May 2016!
78  Journey by Journey / London to South Wales / Re: Awaiting train crew on: February 27, 2019, 23:29:08
Hi All
On the 17.56 from Cardiff to London, been waiting at Bristol Parkway for train crew. This is a new one on me.

Bassett

It does happen.  There are traincrew changes scheduled here and if the relief crew are delayed by late running of their previous job, that's it

Interesting to note the original surprise, as often wondered if there is just a general lack of appreciation of the logistical side to running a railway that has shifts over a 24 hour period.  I'd suspect most who travel on trains operate 37-40 hour weeks so might not encounter the phenomenon that is shift work, so don't have anyone doing their job before they enter the office, nor taking over from them when their "shift" ends.

All the time i worked in more office based environments, be it local government or private company, we never talked about the shift we worked!

I plan to jack in my job and go for Conductor or Train Manager next year as I have always wanted to be one since I was well 11. It is certainly more complex than the people who go to twitter to moan about their 1 minute delay... especially when staff try their upmost to keep passengers informed.

Warm enough for a barbecue Grin

Could have had one on the boiling IET (Intercity Express Train) I was on earlier - the driver saw the forecast for rain on sunday it seems!
80  Journey by Journey / London to South Wales / Re: Awaiting train crew on: February 27, 2019, 23:20:06
Drivers work off legal hours as well, and they won’t use a spare for a 5-10 minute wait as it could have a knock on effect on other services.
81  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway since September 2017 - ongoing discussion on: February 24, 2019, 12:32:13
Still better than the non existent service last year
82  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Cutdown 125's to operate Penzance to Plymouth clockface service on: February 23, 2019, 23:40:10
All I know is that GW02 is still on crew training at St Philips.

Nice to see an extra (fast) morning service from Gloucester.

There is one that apparently Mark Hopwood lives in at Swindon. He pops out when he hears the media talking good about GWR (Great Western Railway)Cheesy

If you are meaning the 400 MMCs then I am quite surprised to see that they are not driver set. We have some that are lovey and warm compared to the normal 400s which take a while to warm up.
86  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: IETs into passenger service from 16 Oct 2017 and subsequent performance issues on: February 02, 2019, 18:03:27
It’s gotten to the point where I simply don’t care if a HST (High Speed Train) or IET (Intercity Express Train) turns up... I still sit comfortably (not literally in comfort, in safeness and easiness) and I don’t commute planning to see an on board Bake Off set provinding for the passengers.

Occasional faults are forgivable and I would only report if it happens multiple times. One issue is the train thinking it needs Air Con when it needs heating.
87  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: February / March 2019 engineering closures on: January 28, 2019, 21:41:50
Anyone know if the hourly Plymouth to Penzance shuttle will be HST (High Speed Train) (8 coach - lovely), HST (4 coach - nice) or 150 (2 coach - please god no)...?

Looking at the other services, it would most likely be DMUs (Diesel Multiple Unit)/HST GTi. You are more likely to be on a 150 however.

For the vigilant and regular travellers of members you would have noticed that signage is (finally) appearing on the IETs (Intercity Express Train). I am working in London again next week after a long time over the place and I will attempt to get a Photo. However at Cardiff Central on Saturday I saw labels for bikes on the side of the trains. In the interior additional safety information posters are appearing and should eventually (alongside the reupholstered seats) will be rolled out over the fleet.
90  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: 4-car HST at Temple Meads, 18-Jan-19 on: January 18, 2019, 23:43:58
The main use of the trains should (eventually) be for Cardiff-Penzance: new services of this distances are (supposedly) going to be introduced in the timetable change(s). They will run the odd shuttles and during early/late hours they may be ending up in Taunton on stoppers and some to Gloucester.

At the moment I believe that GW01 is still flying solo down there. An 802 covered for a shuttle last weekend as well.
