121  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: G7 Summit - Cornwall - June 2021 on: June 12, 2021, 12:26:23
I noticed a special train at Plymouth yesterday, Friday 10th at about 1230. An IET (Intercity Express Train) showing Truro and Penzance. A member of staff said it was for the media and it did look like that as they were all spaced out sitting at laptops. I think it was a 9 car. It was temporarily stopped at Plymouth because of a fatality.

I believe that on the 8th and 9th June there was a special 12.45 Paddington to Penzance and on the 10th June an 08.45 Paddington to Penzance special all believed to be IETs. Presumably there will be some return specials next week?
Btw The Royal train has entered Cornwall (from Windsor and Eton Riverside) and is believed to be stabled at Burngullow.

For those who like me like to look at how the specials did:

8 June
5Z31 Stoke Gifford to Paddington (empty stock)
1Z31 Paddington to Penzance (very interesting that these ran via Badminton, and that Bristol in 1:15¾ is doable)
5Z33 Penzance to Stoke Gifford (empty stock)

9 June
5Z31 Stoke Gifford to Paddington (empty stock)
1Z31 Paddington to Penzance (via Badminton)
5Z33 Penzance to Stoke Gifford (empty stock)

10 June
5Z30 Stoke Gifford to Paddington (empty stock)
1Z30 Paddington to Penzance (via Badminton)
5Z32 Penzance to Stoke Gifford (empty stock)

And looking at next week:

14 June
5Z30 0430 Stoke Gifford to Penzance
1Z30 1002 Penzance to Paddington
5Z32 1615 Paddington to Stoke Gifford (this looks like the path of one of the non-running Cardiff trains if ever there was one – that may be the general modus operandi here)
and
5Z31 0621 Stoke Gifford to Penzance
1Z31 1156 Penzance to Paddington
5Z33 1800 Paddington to Stoke Gifford

15 June
5Z91 0718 North Pole to Paddington
3Z91 0745 Paddington to Penzance
3Z92 1301 Penzance to Paddington
5Z92 1832 Paddington to North Pole
(Not sure this is the same thing – it's a 3Z rather than a 1Z, and it's done out of North Pole rather than Stoke Gifford. Also seems to be running on the 18th.)

So, it appears Pres. Biden has landed at RAF (Royal Air Force) Mildenhall...
Apparently they thought it was in Wiltshire...

There's a few sites that you can Google that specialize in miss-translated Welsh road signs such as the link below:

https://www.translatemedia.com/translation-blog/welsh-road-sign-displays-out-of-office-message-in-translation-blunder/

That one was someone misinterpreting someone's out-of-office, rather than Google. And Google is significantly better than earlier online translation programs – there was a notorious one called Intertran that had a habit of translating the word "entrance" in the sense of "to throw into a trance" amongst other oddities – oh yes:

I can the merit in lightweight bus-like rail vehicles for secondary routes
The problem is that so many of the obvious routes for this sort of thing were shut down in the 60s. Neath Riverside to Hereford via Brecon is the one that immediately springs to mind for me. I'd quite enjoy a ride up to Brecon or Hay in something like that.

Does anyone know why the 769s are so unreliable?
126  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with IET trains from April 2021 on: June 05, 2021, 16:48:12
That might be it. Perverse really, seeing as that particular train is probably busier on Saturdays than during the week. And no-one seems to have told whatever RTT» (Real Time Trains - website)'s source of data is of that plan:
31.58
Swansea [SWA» (
Swansea - next trains)]
Pathed as Class 80x on diesel from here
Service reverses here, gains coaches here
127  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with IET trains from April 2021 on: June 05, 2021, 14:03:25
There seems to be an amount of doing short-forms on the quiet going on. 1L18, the 1032 Carmarthen to Paddington seems to be not gaining its other 5 carriages at Swansea on a regular basis, with this going unreported on JourneyCheck – this is a really bad train to short-form, as it tends to be an exceptionally busy one (more so than the trains starting at Swansea an hour either side) – there's the factor of the extra riders from West Wales, and that this hits Cardiff at 1215 (i.e. lunchtime). And of course, if they don't report it, no-one can plan to avoid it.
128  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Off peak fares in South Wales on: June 03, 2021, 12:27:12
Maybe they should concentrate on installing ticket gates at Port Talbot
Among several others. Cardiff Bay, the busiest unstaffed station in Britain, has to be the most absurd bit of station facilities not being adjusted in line with ridership (and there the failures extend to not developing the obvious retail opportunities as well). But they've got gaping revenue holes galore out there – Trefforest, Heath High Level, Pontyclun, and so on.
129  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Off peak fares in South Wales on: June 03, 2021, 12:15:55
There is still a TfW-set off-peak return from Cardiff-Manchester at £93.80.
With a non-restriction restriction code of 8A.

It's a bit more obvious what they've done if you look at the First Class fares:

FOR  ANYTIME 1R          ◊    1ST  RETURN   ADULT: £140.70   CHILD: £70.35
FSR (First Scot Rail)  OFF-PEAK 1R   8A    ◊    1ST  RETURN   ADULT: £140.70   CHILD: £70.35

Just when you thought the idea of cheap, light, buslike trains was dead - along come some new ones!

Big question which I don't see in the text - 4 wheels or 8?

Looks like the sort out the equality access for loos on a single coach train by levelling down - no loo for anyone?" Business case ... line extensions and re-openings" it says. Likely good to try on existing freight lines and perhaps for the peak contra-flow train on line with one ended peak traffic ... sorry to sound so negative.   Possibly short and frequent routes?

* Paignton to Churston, early morning, late afternoon into evening and all day in winter?
* Bodmin Parkway to Bodmin General shuttle
* Taunton to Minehead, the contra-flow train in the hourly pattern (3 car needed for peak)
* Extras to Gunnislake - the contraflow (passing at Bere Alston)
* Yate to Iron Acton and Tytherington shuttle
* Mendip Vale to Witham, Frome and Westbury
* Castle Cary to Yeovil Junction via Sparkford, Queen Camel and Yeovil Pen Mill

Political will needed - unlikely that any of those would make a good profit but each potentially excellent for the area served?

The problem I see with those is that at least a couple of them would be better used not being shuttles:
* Beyond Paignton: just extend the proper trains through to Kingswear. People aren't going to ride the trains if they're going to have to change even to get to Torquay.
* Tytherington? That's one where relaying a short distance of track back into Thornbury would make the line's business case significantly better. And it could be better still as an extension of existing Bristol local services currently terminating at Bristol Parkway.
131  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: George Lane Bridge Wyre Piddle on: June 02, 2021, 15:42:44
It looks like there isn't an any permitted fare from Worcester Stns to London Terminals. The choice seems to be:
  • via Evesham (SOR £91.60)
  • WMR & LNR Only (ADT £105.00)
  • Via H Wyc & Birm (SOR £127.20)
  • Evesham/Stroud (SOR £189.60)
  • via Birmingham (SOR £206.20)
Does this mean that it's forbidden to go one way via Birmingham and the other via Evesham/Stroud?

Why not Stapleton Road rather than Lawrence Hill? That at least has step-free access.
133  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Re: Bedwyn, Hungerford and Kintbury - state of service, late May 2021 on: May 31, 2021, 21:20:05
If only after Pewsey it could go Devizes, Semington, Bradford-on-Avon, Bath, Oldfield Park, Keynsham, and Bristol Temple Meads. Might get a bit of ridership going in both directions then.

I think the only amusingly wrong one I've giggled at lately was BSK (Brake Standard Corridor (carriage)) (as in the CRS code for Basingstoke) suddenly becoming a Mk I Brake Third Corridor. I think I prefer Basingstoke...

Edit: I just want to say how brilliant the expansion of abbreviations is – I really appreciate it, towns in north Hampshire and old rolling stock notwithstanding!

I'm actually surprised they're not considering the opposite option: close the goods branch. The value of that aggregates terminal site as residential land would be very high. There's also plenty of rail-connected space downstream on the Isle of Grain to transfer aggregates from boats to trains.
