29191  Journey by Journey / Transport for London / Re: Crossrail/Elizabeth Line. From construction to operation - ongoing discussion on: February 09, 2012, 22:49:21

Why are all the names female?  Isn't that a bit sexist?   How about Tom and Dick, in memory of WWII (World War 2 - 1939 to 1945) escape tunnels ...
29192  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Under five children in Seats on: February 09, 2012, 22:38:40
I always amazed at the number of people who put bags on the seat during the height of rush hour ....

One opposite me at the moment - not actually the rush hour, but the very well loaded 22:15 Paddington to Bristol.   Not that I'm objecting - I can stretch my legs out under the table (for which I reserved a seat last month!)
29193  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Re: Newbury teens campaign to reduce train fares on: February 09, 2012, 10:38:47
<advocate type="devil">
The age limit for half price fares should be raised to 190.  That way, everyone is eligible for travel at the same rate.
</advocate>

Why is there a discount in the first place for people in their young teens?   They take up just as much space / just as many seats ...

P.S. ...
Swindon to London, 72 miles, 28.00 child, 56.00 adult = 77.7p / mile
Newbury to London, 52 miles, 12.95 child, 25.90 adult = 49.8p / mile
But, surely, Newbury to London is not a "commute to school" for too many?

The charity reference is clearly an error. However, I am still left with the rather disconcerting impression that there is a trade off between investment in level crossing safety and the payment of directors' bonuses.

Well put

Damned if they do and damned if they don't, perhaps...? No doubt they'd be taking heat were they to accept the bonuses, but we seem to be criticizing them here for foregoing them!

That's fair comment. I think that the idea of what looks like a PR (Public Relations) exercise to score brownie points from it made me a bit negative.  And the idea that safety was something that wasn't a core of the business, but rather was supplied though charitable stuff, didn't help.

As CLPG» (Cotswold Line Promotion Group - about) implies when you look at the list there is not many places from where you could take in a show and be guarenteed to get to back to the station in time to catch the last train home.

Yes - but my lists are looking at the 80 - 120 mile range, and my concerns for business people who are working / working late / into the early evening - the longer distance (sometimes occasional) commuters.  You'll probably find later trains if you look at shorter distances - to the West of London, last trains to Reading, Henley, Marlow, Maidenhead.  And take in the other 'burbs such as Hemel, Luton, Hertford, Shenfield, Basildon, Gravesend, Sevenoaks, Godstone, Caterham, Epsom Downs, Dorking, Guildford and Staines for example.

Certainly not going to charity by the looks of things.

I'll admit to feeling rather put out by the suggestion that rail safety should be something that require the action / inputs of a charity - I felt (and feel) that all necessary steps for rail safety should be the direct responsibility of Network Rail and the train operators.

But I'm not sure how much happier I am that the directors of Network Rail are magnimously reassigining money that would have been their bonuses to a safety budget which - surely - should be properly funded in the first place.  The whole thing rather smacks of "if we use words like safety and charity, people won't ask too many questions"

Sir David, who was eligible for a bonus of up to ^340,000, said in a statement that they would be donating the money to a rail safety charity.

The total bonuses are around 2 million, I think I saw someone say?

I'm interested by the "rail safety charity" reference. Can anyone enlighten me / provide me with examples of what that might be.  Rail and safety and charity are each great words, but (and I may be being thick) I'm not sure I see how they combine.

As a significant proportion of people use QR (QR Code - Quick Response code) codes, I'm going to place a QR code on each page. The current demonstration simply links to the top of the Coffee Shop.  But I'm going to modify that so that the QR code use provides a link to the current board or topic.   That way, if anyone prints out a page / hands it around others can get back to it.

Revised list,  thanks for the inputs.  I've kinda got used to missing the last train home to my town's station, and having to make alternative plans from the nearest still-operating railhead during the evening.  Only when I was at Paddington the other evening did I realise just how significant this was for other places, with "Final Connection to ..." showing on the departures for a number of services.

I suspect that "First Connections" are somewhat less significant - but they do matter to business travellers heading out for meetings, etc - and they're often peak fares, so clearly considered to be busy trains.  Can anyone tell me what the latest "First Connection" is?   Undecided

29202  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture - related rail and other transport issues / Re: Final Connections on: February 04, 2012, 19:58:56
Does the midnight to Brighton still run (I know under 80 miles), although it use to slit for Eastbourne so could still count.

First job on the night shift at Victoria everyone on the platform to sort out the drunks  into the right portion.

There's an 00:05 and an 01:00 ... yes, perhaps I should add those when I revise the list.

I wasn't too sure where to call it a day (literally) on some of the shorter distances and near-all-night services - should I have counted the sleeper as the last train to Taunton, for example?

At the other end of the list ... I have come up with one destination that fits the description (distance, population), with an even earlier last train than the 19:30 for Spalding and Shanklin ...

29203  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture - related rail and other transport issues / Re: Final Connections on: February 04, 2012, 13:12:09
Newport & Cardiff are actually 23:30.

22:45 should be Bristol PW (Permanent Way), Bridgend - Swansea.

FC(resolve)

I really wondered about calling Newport and Cardiff 23:30 - but that train goes via Temple Meads and doesn't arrive until after 2 a.m.;  getting to be "first train" rather than "last train" almost?    Agreed on the 22:45 for Bridgend to Swansea, though getting beyond my 120 miles (yes, I know I included Exeter!).   I'll amend / update the list when I get a batch of others to add.
