151  Journey by Journey / London to Kennet Valley / Reading Festival - Confused on: August 28, 2009, 09:44:10
Deterred by traffic from driving into Reading last night because of Festival Traffic so like many others parked at Theale and caught the train in. R

Really confused with increased traffic load why the last train out of Reading to Theale the 20.41. All services after where provided by bus. Presume that this affected all Kennet Line services. Certainly the last Newbury was just after 21.00hrs.

The first night of the Festival is a strange night to have engineering works - anyone know why and what was happening ?? Or why once again planners seemed oblivious to the extra traffic needs of a major event somewhere.

Plymouth good last Friday - missed the last Gunnislake by ten mins on late running train from Paddington. Taxi was immediately ordered. Interestingly three of us with through tickets were given taxi but person with ticket to Plymouth who intended to buy ticket on train to Gunnislake was not so lucky.

It was!!

Sod's law (should have asked the question) - the plymouth train came in 23 minutes late the connection wasn't held and I ended up in a taxi to Gunnislake courtesy of FGW (First Great Western).

Many thanks for this - has answered my question really well.

Just for my own interest -

I am traveling to Gunnislake this evening on an off peak saver return from Newbury. If I travel after 6.30 I can still get as far as Plymouth but the connection on to Gunnislake is not available until the next morning. As I think I technically cannot break my journey does that mean technically I have to stay on the platform until the first train tomorrow morning. I know from a practical perspective I will get picked up at Plymouth and all will be fine - I just wondered what the score would be if the rules on travel were applied to the letter.

PS I hope to traveling on the 18.17 so so should connect at Plymouth to the last train up the branch.
157  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: SWT Midsummer Madness ^ a ^10 day away on: July 29, 2009, 07:35:28
I'm contemplating using this, driving to Newton Abbot, ^4.60 CDR (Off Peak Day Return [ticket type] (formerly 'Cheap Day')) to Honiton and ^10 to London.

Similar here - Drive to Basingstoke, Basingstoke to Honiton ^10 then Honiton to Plymouth CDR ^9.80. Beats splitting a Newbury - Plymouth DR at Taunton by 50%.
158  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Class 142s in Cornwall on: July 26, 2009, 22:57:27
Noticed 142068 coupled to a class 153 in Plymouth forming the 17.35 to Penzance this evening.  Are 142 journeys into Cornwall fairly common these days ??
159  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Amusing if not misleading automated anouncements on: July 09, 2009, 19:17:13
I'm probably wrong but isn't it the 13.54 that starts Plymouth. The 12.55 is the Gunnislake train so would normally start from platform 3 but could I guess start from 5.
160  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: Non-Existent Service on: June 30, 2009, 19:06:09
No not mad at all. I have traveled fairy frequently on the 09.21 Paighton from Newbury and this has been missing from the departure board a couple of times causing much confusion amongst passengers and with station staff unsure as to why it is not shown. Every other train is correctly shown except this one. I would be interested to know what causes these departures not to be shown on the departures boards.
161  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Station and on board train announcements - merged topic, ongoing discussion on: June 28, 2009, 22:45:54
Sorry I wasn't very clear - announcement was on the platform at Newbury not on train
162  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Station and on board train announcements - merged topic, ongoing discussion on: June 28, 2009, 21:51:32
Traveling down to Plymouth this moring on the 9.48 from Newbury was surprised on what sounded like a pre-recorded announcement for Liskeard to be pronounced Lisky-e-ard rather than Liskard.

I wondered why it would be wrong on what sounded like a pre-recorded announcement and what other similar mispronunciations exist across the west.
163  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Glastonbury on: June 28, 2009, 21:04:13
Just had a most interesting run  to Reading on the 17.45 ex Plymouth which would rival any commuter train in terms of overcrowding when an extra pick up only stop for Glastonbury was made at Castle Cary tonight.

Just wondered what the guidance is to train staff re this sort of overcrowding due to event like this Huh?
164  All across the Great Western territory / Your rights and redress / Re: Fed up with HST arm rests - third suit pocket ripped tonight on: June 25, 2009, 12:45:15
Since there has not been a rush of others ripping trouser pockets on the armrest - my conclusion It's me!!!! Interesting that arm rests could spark some interesting discussion.
165  All across the Great Western territory / Your rights and redress / Fed up with HST arm rests - third suit pocket ripped tonight on: June 24, 2009, 21:48:15
It may just be me but I have managed to rip three sets of suit trouser pockets sitting down on HST (High Speed Train) seat armrests - the latest tonight. The pocket catches on them and by the time my bum hits the seat the pocket is ripped. Question is it just me Huh of do other people  do the same Huh
