1  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: 'Bath is ready to have things done' on: September 02, 2019, 13:07:48
...the Burgermasters said NO.

Can you give links to the Network Rail proposal you refer to, and the response to them? I'm not sure who these burgermasters you refer to are: the council? The Bath Preservation Trust certainly appear to have struck a pragmatic balance between the requirements of electrification and the need (for it is a need) to protect Bath.

I can't provide a link but I attended one of the drop in sessions at the Guildhall in Bath in 2015 and the subject of the OHL (Over-Head Line) was definitely raised. Looking at the artists impression of a service passing through Sydney Gardens the OHL support depicted is not of a typical GWML (Great Western Main Line) OHL structure. There might even have been display boards depicting the designs forwarded for consideration but thats all academic now as it seems GWML electrification  ceases at Wooton Bassett for the foreseeable future.

The Bath Preservation Trust are probably consulted on matters concerning changing the face of Bath like the likes of The Merchant Venturers and Bristol Civic Societies are similarly used in Bristol.
Just to point out that electrification doesn't stop at Wooton Bassett, it gets within 1/4 of a mile of Chippenham. Apart from the footbridge at Chippenham virtually all the other clearance work has been done at huge expense (Box tunnel, Sydney Gardens) so actually getting to Bristol East should be relatively straight forward. There have been plenty of other listed structures dealt with along the way if they really wanted to do it, so I don't think Chippenham footbridge is really a major stumbling block.
2  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Four track for Filton Bank - ongoing discussion on: October 08, 2018, 13:19:11
Given there are only platforms on the relief side and that the current track alignment shifts from relief to main i don't see how they can not use the new track!

On another forum there is a picture of the new footbridge at Stapleton Road and mention of rails laid on the new up main under Narroways footbridge. Anyone able to get some pics?

I think my comment was supposed to suggest that the space should be used for seats rather than a kitchen or buffet or whatever. When your journeys are all during peak commuter time and you end up standing for the very high price you've paid for a ticket you begin to resent large wasted spaces. Peak trains should not be compromised so a relatively few people can have the occasional hot meal.

Four out of five days this week the 8:17 Chippenham to Bristol has been 5 cars which is worrying for reliability. On a positive note the train is now arriving several minutes early to match HST (High Speed Train) performance which was never the case until the last month. As far as buffets go, who ever used them? In over 30 years of using gwr I can count on one hand the number of times I've bought something. Give the space to seats! As soon as the 9 cars are in widespread use hopefully all these gripes will go away, I wanted to hate these trains but they are actually pretty good.
6  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Forthcoming major engineering work Swindon/Chippenham 2017 on: February 22, 2017, 15:44:36
Hi
There were new leaflets on the train this morning warning of major work at Swindon in May or June and Chippenham in July. Does anyone know what the impact to services will be? I do hope we won't be back to buses!
7  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Re: Replacement buses Bath to Chippenham on: August 04, 2015, 23:02:25
This was the 17:00 and yes the route was Widcombe pultney road, clevland bridge, London road.
But today the 7:45 bus broke down just outside Corsham.  A "rescue" bus was dispatched except it was just the next bus nearly full so half our bus didn't get on, luckily I did but don't know what happened to the others.
on the way home I tried the 16:45 bus and slight improvement at only 1 hour 10 mins. After this weeks season ticket is finished I will be driving.

The Widcombe changes and the London road plus emergency gas works on London road.

First day of buses! Morning was fine with journey taking 45 mins but coming home this evening took 1:30 with first hour just to get out of Bath. Would be quicker to walk! Wish I hadn't bought weekly season or I'd be driving and using P&R (Park and Ride).
10  Journey by Journey / London to Swindon and Bristol / Re: Flash flooding - Corsham 18/19 Sep 14 on: September 19, 2014, 15:40:50
Hope they've sorted out the bus situation, tried to board the 231 at Chippenham station this morning and the driver refused to accept rail tickets until the station employee persuaded him to take 10 people. At the next stop someone who had heard on the radio tried to get on and the driver just stopped the bus, waited 10 mins then called his supervisor who had not heard either. Eventually the last passenger to get on spoke to the supervisor, told them it was on the radio and TV and finally the driver continued.
Unbelievable!
Wonder how easy it will be to get home tonight.

Does nayone know what is going on with the dissused platform. They have taken up the edge at the Bath end for about 50ft I guess. This is the part that curves in towards the line and reduces the available width, maybe they are going to straighten it to allow the reinstatement of track to that platform?
