16  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: Brightons gone again on: July 14, 2018, 18:02:59

Perhaps GWR (Great Western Railway) want to be rid of them in the next franchise.
[/quote]

It's First Group really as current holders of the GWR franchise you need to aim your complaints at. And I can't see them retaining this one when it comes up for renewal hence the shocking level of interest in anything other than HSS (High Speed Services).

Service level is set elsewhere and if Brighton's are deemed required then the next franchise will be required to deliver. That s unless the franchise is split.
17  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: Officially 5 cars? on: July 14, 2018, 17:53:43
It's a shame we don't get info regarding what is going on strategically regarding this.

The handing back of stock on lease hasn't helped obviously and 165's have only recently started appearing. Along with the ongoing 158 refurb programme and weather, and reputedly lack of engineers to repair failed units then it's a killer.

I understand peaks are meant to be 5 car and have needed to be be for a number of years, getting the reliability out of the stock avai!able is the problem.

Last weekend there were a number of diagrams being covered by 2 car units leaving people stranded. And 3 car 150/0 are not uncommon.

And 3+2 seating on this route is ridiculous in my opinion and seriously retrograde. First just claim additional seats on the route without doing anything

So which were 'MAIN' and 'RELIEF' lines through Stapleton Road/Lawrence Hill?

Regarding tackbed height, it looks considerably lower on the reinstated route and far lower than would make the old platforms viable.

Will it be only on the RELIEF (Northern) section that will require dual running signalling?
19  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: The reliability of the early morning services on: March 29, 2018, 13:59:33
The loss of engineers was always going to happen, and probably forseable in any competent corporate governance structure.

Sadly First Group seem to have just left them to follow the money, and the shiney new undercover maintenance facilities up the road, unsurprising.

This has left a frequent stock fill in of the 3 car150/1's on the Portsmouth Cardiff's, and on Fridays without the added 153 or 150 2 car makes an entertaining journey.

And you can just hear the claims from First that they have added X extra seats by running Turbos on this route. Not that everyone of their passengers is royayl pissed off with the stock.

Firstly apologies to Graham for disrupting your breakfast the other day, but thanks for sorting out my login issue.

From a regular user on the route, the bridge span looks like a single structure. It also looks like there is still some way to go before the supporting structures are going to be ready, some concrete pouring still to do.

A route that was 4 track not that long ago the amount of work to bring it back to engineering requirements today is quite frankly huge. Some of the biggest work looks to have been the underpinning work south of narroways. Subsidence in the area has been an issue for a number of years, hopefully now sorted.

Filton station work progresses but not entirely sure even now what the final layout will be.

Anyway Hi to everyone.

Were the 08/09's moved by road in the 40's? It wouldn't have been much easier even then to have transported them to their respective depots. The orignal design does date back to the 30's.  Undecided

I saw a report in one of the mags about re-engining some class 73s with 1500 hp diesel engines.

That would make them quite smart performers with 3 or 4 30 ton coaches in push pull mode. Much cheaper than a bi mode unit.

More re-engined 31's in push pull would be my favourite.

 Wink

Is it a bit late to point out that Metro Cammel no longer build trains.

The Chinese to a good line in lightweight rolling stock.
24  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Another day of woe. 29/11/2012 on: November 29, 2012, 16:15:55
I'm not sure whether this should sit here but todays incidents directly affected journeys from Trowbridge.

Fortunately there would appear to little direct impact on the Pompey Cardiff route from the weather, although clearly there have been knock on effects to services through Trowbridge not least the recent landslip at Westerleigh, which is clearly a bit of a headache at the moment.

I understand the slip was further compounded earlier today with a points failure in the Parkway area this morning causing some delays and stranding a train in the tunnel, unfortunately I don't have any specifics on this particular event, but opted to delay my journey to Filton due to the reports.

When everything appeared to be getting back to normal further attempts to get to Bristol were thwarted by a HST (High Speed Train) failure at Bath, which took approx an hour to clear, and as reported by the guard additional signalling/points problems at Bathampton Junction, again I have no official evidence to support that problem either at the moment, perhaps others have better insight than me.

Anyway my sympathies to both travellers at the moment and staff trying their very best to get them to their destinations under very trying conditions.

Or just rent a nice purple Brompton at Temple Meads and lock it up there on your way home.

I'd be happy to see a booking fee re introduced and I've travelled with a bike on the train for nearly 20 years.
26  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: More Ticket Machines for Bristol Temple Meads on: November 20, 2012, 19:21:17
Unfortunately the new machines are now so popular that at peak times the customers there now block the entrance to the station.  Roll Eyes

No other details to report, but things seem to be back to normal after an hour (or so) in Wetherspoons.
29  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Bristol Temple Meads Station redevelopment on: October 02, 2012, 17:01:22
I suspect that there is sufficient capacity both at Temple Meads and within the greater Bristol area that additional land probably isn't required.

Platform 1 extended into the old shed, and a new platform 0, re-open Platform 2, and there is also options I'm sure to remodel around 15.

Once Filton bank is 4 tracked there's scope for Lawrence Hill improvements as a better interchange from the east if rhubarb curve is utilised.

Although I don't use it there must be options for improvements at Bedminster to serve inbound from the west.
30  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Curious workings between Bristol & Bath on: July 19, 2012, 09:17:44
Now 9.16 and sat wrong line just outside Bath on the 08.23 ex TRO» (Trowbridge - next trains). Interesting morning.

Just wondering if we'll be AXED at Bristol.  Grin

Edit at 09.25, we've been Axed.
