31  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: Dean and Tisbury - Help sought on: July 05, 2012, 17:17:10
Also if you are unfortunate enough that you missed your stop for connections at Salisbury and find yourself in Tisbury, the Slaughtered Lamb close to the station does a decent pint while you wait the hour for your return trip. If you are really unfortunate and you wait takes you past 23.59 then they have rooms.  Grin
32  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Vandalism near Cheltenham on: June 19, 2012, 14:21:09
Was caught up in that about midday on the way to Newark, about 20 late into Brum, but managed to get my connection on to Nottingham.

Pretty reasonable communication from the XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) guard about delay times and was out and about if PAX had any questions.

The phrase 'There is no such thing as bad publicity' springs to mind regarding the 2007 date.

There was probably more press coverage for/against/about rail in the Greater Bristol area than there had been for decades possibly. Followed with a further campaign by FGW (First Great Western) to say what they were doing to make everyone happy again, albeit almost back to Wessex levels in these parts.

Word of mouth probably also helps as reliability improved and the refresh tidied up the stock so there were improvements of sorts to relay to friends who scoffed.

As many on here are aware the nightmare that commuting into Bristol by car can be makes even a slightly crowded train a joy.

Didn't Brunel go through quite a bit of "Roman" heritage during construction of the line.  Wink

In lengths like this, without tension, the steel bends easily.

Possibly not what you were inferring in you comment FTN, but it may be useful for others if there was something readily available regarding pre-tensioning of CWR (Continuously Welded Rail), which may go some way in explaining the reason behind the speed restriction at Bathampton junction the other week during the warm spell. It was a recently relaid section that may not have been tensioned IIRC (if I recall/remember/read correctly), and possibly not completely tamped.

It's quite interesting how thermal expasion/contraction is compensated for over large sections of solid rail.

BNM, have your concerns borne fruit and a new yellow travel centre recently appeared on the car park next to the station.  Wink

I can't find anything about it elsewhere on the board so thought I might as well post here rather then a new thread. Mods feel free to modify as you wish.

Just a small observation on 150125, it would appear FGW (First Great Western) are going increasingly Green with the fitting of LED replacements for florescents.

First time I've seen them in action.

40  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: This could be interesting.... on: April 12, 2012, 12:45:41
Apologies if anyone was expecting a harrowing tale of crush conditions, maybe it's the Easter week, but in the end it wasn't.  Cool

As it is a journey I take fairly regularly I was anticipating it getting a bit lively but there were spare seats all the way to Trowbridge. Those who did stand  were of the 'option' variety.

2 Car 150 doing the 17:23 off Portsmouth.  Shocked

They hadn't only slowed down around Filton yesterday they were stationary with buses between Parkway and BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains) for a while according to NRE(resolve).

Emergency engineering works was the reason given but whether this was due to the sun or not I'm not sure, but it was pretty much back to normal by about 17:00.

How many emergency SIMs do you have.   Lips sealed

I didn't check whether she was wearing flat shoes.  Wink
44  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Re: Apple abuse on: March 26, 2012, 22:14:03
Mmmmm, interesting way this thread has gone, which I suppose looking back at my OP (Original Poster / topic starter) was going to be the way, but not the intention. What happened to the 'technology frees everyone from drudgery' sales pitch.

If you are are conducting 2 simultaneous txt conversations on phones I would suspect neither are work related, 2 separate SIM cards for other uses?

iPad was just for gaming, in breaks from txting.

In quiet moments she decided to look at the laptop.......

Shouldn't 1 device be enough for all you want to do?

ps Bluetooth isn't all it's cracked up to be......but that's another story.
45  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Apple abuse on: March 22, 2012, 20:14:17
I've seen people on trains using a couple of devices simultaneously but a woman I spotted earlier had running, and was using, 2 iPhones, an iPad and a laptop (I assume Apple). Both phones were txt, the iPad for a game and what appeared to be real work on the pc.  Shocked

Anyone seen, or even admit to that level of inadequacy, or even lunacy.
