Just a thought with reference to the presumed change of Government which may be upon us by 2010.   

David Cameron may boast  'green' credentials and has undeniably have given the Tories a modern voice; but as PM, he will be under massive pressure to deliver the kind of policies so still so dear the heart of his party.   A larger and more vigorous rail industry would arguably require more public investment, anathema to traditional Tories and would also increase the clout of the unions.  Historically, the Tories have not been exactly pro-rail.  For all his posturing, David Cameron may not be able to change that stance.

The 18:15 weekday dep from WSM runs through to AVN.  Presumably the reason it is usually formed of a 143.  On the few times I have worked it, (yes we do most of Bristol's work for them as well ), through loadings have been relatively light, but the train is always busy from BRI^» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains).

The trouble is that a large slice of 'Middle' Britain believes without question, every word they publish. 

It has been pointed out that 'spotters' are friends of the railway. From an inside perspective, it is good to have extra eyes and ears open, particularly when they are on your side. 

On a lighter note, I understand that it would be possible for potential terrorists to use spotting as a cover for their activities, but IMO^▸ (in my opinion) they would never succeed in getting the 'look', or the badges and pens for that matter.

NXEA^▸ (National Express East Anglia) do have Mk 3s although  I am surprised that plymouthian didn't find his 'HST^▸ (High Speed Train)' a little quiet.


Just to muddy the water, I believe that as far back as 1931, a German, Zepplin built railcar with a petrol engine achieved 142 mph.  This speed was surpassed by a (pre-production?) HST which clocked 143 mph in June 1973, still a world record.

Yes Oxman, reading back, my post on this subject was confusing.  I should have mentioned that Pertis machines, (which are obsolescent anyway I believe), are a separate beast.  That said, I will be understandably more sympathetic towards a customer who approaches me for an excess to say Gloucester, on a ticket, (purchased from a TVM^▸ (Ticket Vending Machine)) and valid from Yate to Cam & Dursley, then I would to someone who claims to have got on at Temple Meads but doesn't have a ticket to show when challenged.

I'll shut up before I get a lambasting then.

I know that it is showing on the JP at the moment and also that the 'extension' was thought preferable to sitting in the sidings.  This section of line is covered pretty comprehensively by LM^▸ (London Midland - recent franchise) though and if as rumoured, their WOS^» (Worcester Shrub Hill - next trains)-GCR^» (Gloucester - next trains) services are retimed from May, we may yet see a change. 

Back in the depth of winter, I did moot the possibility of an Unfounded Rumours and Gossip section, (rather than just a thread).  The idea was that stories such as these could be posted and discussed as possibilities, not hard facts or done deals.  Many 'depot' rumours come to nothing, but others hold a grain, (or more), of truth.

Strong rumours BTW^▸ (by the way) that the Malverns are to be dropped by FGW^▸ (First Great Western) West services from the May timetable.

I don't work 165/6s, but in the west, when using say 3 or 4 car sets which are too long for a platform, we board pax via the front local door, leaving the remaining doors locked shut.  (This occurs at Melksham and Avoncliff as a matter of routine).  I am surprised that this facility is apparantely not available/used??? on the turbos.  Would this be due to local rules or just a design difference?
