I usually get the Summer book and it provides my bedside reading for a whole year (sadly, some may say!). I once bought the on line edition and it really was a huge disappointment to the browser. However, If I was setting off on one of these lovely Interrail trips which I follow, I guess the on line edition makes more sense, although I expect I personally would make room to pack the book as well.
And the second book by the bed is the Centenary edition which was published 30 years ago . . .

I think that the captain of a ship is also allowed to perform a marriage.
That depends on the laws of the country of registration of the ship. It was not legal on UK▸ ships and was the reason for the home port of the Queen Mary 2 being changed from Southampton to Hamilton Bermuda in 2011. I believe that it is now legal on British registered ships although not sure.

Don't give up considering a freight carrying ship'. It is usually far less austere than it sounds. It does help if you are good at entertaining yourself with books and music - you never know it may result in your first novel . . . For me, on the couple of occasions that I have travelled this way .I have been lucky in having Masters who welcomed my very extended visits to the bridge.

The money earner is London - Paris
Mind - the RyanAir model of London (South Greenford) to Paris (Cergy St-Christophe) gets over the St Pancras and Gare du Nord congestion issue South Greenford? Why not move it a couple of miles and, entering into the realms of absolute, mad, stupid fantasy, to Old Oak Common. . . Not as daft as it sounds, Old Oak Common box construction has passive provision for a link to HS1▸ My comment was tongue in cheek!

On the bus in London I usually wave and call out thanks on alighting. I do like the custom in the East, particularly noticeable throughout China, whereby the staff line up and salute the train as it leaves the platform even on frequent interval, short, city routes such as the maglev in Pudong. The only time I remember seeing that in Europe was on the 'Children's Railway' in Budapest. (I think that that is no longer in operation, sadly.)
