3826  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Turbo new cis system on: November 24, 2009, 22:16:06
How about removal of 1st class, tickets are never checked where the turbo's do most of their work, suburban commuter, the extra standard accommodation would be usefully, table just take up space and fold up ones would last 5 minuets, airline arrangement like the HST (High Speed Train) refurb would give more seating.

New flooring - yes
Improved heating for 165 - yes
Improved locks on windows - yes
166 air con fix or total removal and opening windows fitted

Was on 0752 Oxford - Paddington this morning.
It was, as this is formed by the 07:03 Maidenhead departure not that anyone who got on at Maidenhead had a chance to look at one mainly because we're lucky if we can even find standing room
3828  Journey by Journey / London to Didcot, Oxford and Banbury / Re: Network Rail staff injured in incident at Kennington on: November 20, 2009, 22:27:49
I'm a lawyer (but a bit old-fashioned as you'll see). This splitting up of authority just produces a complete legal minefield with different accountabilities and failure to get to the root of a problem quick.

Shrink the playing field, quick.
Professionally at work I would freely talk to the RAIB (Rail Accident Investigation Branch) but would more coy talking to the HMIR although both are done under caution
3829  Journey by Journey / London to Didcot, Oxford and Banbury / Re: Network Rail staff injured in incident at Kennington on: November 20, 2009, 17:22:11
There is a lot of process interviews and research behind RAIB (Rail Accident Investigation Branch) reports also they may have had to wait for the final Coroners Report, any Police investigations and reports etc.

RAIB is independent of the Her Majesty's Inspector of Railways (HMIR) who used to be part of the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) but are now part of the ORR» (Office of Rail and Road formerly Office of Rail Regulation - about).  The RAIB like the other Accident Investigation Branches (Air the oldest and Maritime) can only divulge details of witness if instructed to do so by a Court in the near 100 years of the AAIB (Air Accident Investigation Branch) they have never divulged such information.

The HMIR can prosecute like the HSE the RAIB can not prosecute but witness are compelled by law to give evidence to them

For a pic of the damage see

http://www.hounslowchronicle.co.uk/west-london-news/local-hounslow-news/2009/11/17/no-feltham-to-london-trains-until-christmas-109642-25187632/

This is a real pain for me as I have been using this line on Fridays to get to college. Now I shall have to go via Central London.

What really freaks me out though is the thought that I went over that bridge on Saturday evening.....!
What's even more concerning, if you look at the photo you can see it has recently hand some repair work done to it, would not like to be the project manager or engineer who looked after that project

Not sure if this website http://www.seat61.com/ has been posted in the coffee shop before but anyway someone might find it of use.

A website about how to travel by train in Europe

Which River is invoved? Is it the Colne? The Thames Bridges are at Richmond, Staines and Datchet.

I've heard it suggested it might be a landslide whether it's associted with abridge i didn't hear..
Not sure exactly which stream or river but I have been told it is a culvert that sunk on Saturday, divers have been down to assess the damage rumors flying around are from "will be fixed this weekend" to "will take 3 weeks"  Nothing has been posted on the intra net as yet which surprises me
3833  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Wanted New Direct Train to Windsor on: November 13, 2009, 22:18:52
Slough also had two sidings at the eastern end of the station between platforms 3 and 4
Those sidings went when Southall Depot closed in the early m mid 80's Slough was also a Train Crew booking on point (located on plat 5) DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit)'s were stabled in those sidings.  You are right stations change quite a bite like the Depot at slough now the station car park
3834  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Wanted New Direct Train to Windsor on: November 13, 2009, 21:24:57
A fanciful idea if ever I heard one. Whoever thinks that is feasible should really have been around in the late 19th Century when ideas like that actually stood a chance of being built before houses got in the way of everything!

By all means electrify the route and use one of these 4-car Class 319's that are hopefully heading our way, even consider running a couple of through trains a day to the capital as there have been in the past, but a west end spur is frankly laughable.

How can you run through trains to London?  Doesnt the track kind of end at the buffers?
Yes there are stop blocks at the end of platform 1 but the branch is conected to the Down Main just west of Slough station
3835  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Wanted New Direct Train to Windsor on: November 13, 2009, 20:14:11
Ah ok.

My mistake!

But isn't it reasonably easy to change at Slough - it was when I used to travel Windsor - Reading!
Ah but the politician's want a direct service they all of a sudden keen on public transport, basically because that's where Government funding is aimed at
3836  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Wanted New Direct Train to Windsor on: November 13, 2009, 20:09:40
try Windsor & E Riverside - Waterloo? - that's a direct service!
To London yes but not between the two towns of the Royal Borough.  Al
3837  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Wanted New Direct Train to Windsor on: November 13, 2009, 19:38:05
Problem with a west curve and services Maidenhead Windsor is it would miss Slough out there by reducing the amount of passengers making it viable, a possible better solution would be to reinstate the bay at the west end of platform 3 / 4 trains could the run relief to Slough reverse and cross both mains the pathing might be easier to achieve, but running relief will not fit in the the Crossrail model.

Now a forward thinking service would be a Windsor via Slough to Alysbury via Bourne End  Shocked Shocked Shocked Shocked hang on didn't the GWR (Great Western Railway) used to do a Slough Aylsbury service 70 years ago

Did I sleep walk for five months.......bay at west end (Reading end) of 3/4?

There is a bay on the Windsor bit and a bay that never seems to be used but a bay on 3/4?  Unless you are saying new platforms and bay needs building - in which case what happened to the old one?  Unless there is a bay there and I just didn't notice!
If you look at the Reading end of 3/4 at the roof you will see the same construction as the bays at Reading, I am quite sure that at some stage in its life Slough had a bay at 3/4 like it used to have a through line through the relief line platforms
3838  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Trains 'too costly' for rail firm on: November 13, 2009, 19:32:09
The point is - in a car, you are somewhat in control of your own destiny - on a plane, bus or train, you trust the driver.
Not quite true, as a driver of a car you are reliant on the other drivers to do what you think they should be doing and them not misinterpreting what you are doing - - - all very random

When BR (British Rail(ways)) brought new stock it was depreciated in their accounts over a fixed period of time (typically 20 or 30 years).
BR were not allowed depreciation by the DoT they BR had to fund the full cost of new stock, but having said that BR did have spare stock, the current franchise system does actively encourage the only just enough stock after all the share holders will only fund to the point where they get the maximum return
