1966  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Fare Evasion on: May 12, 2009, 17:15:30
On a related note: I liked the "Ticket Office Opening Hours" table in the back of the good old Timetable Book E.
This states that Filton Abbey Wood is "Closed" on Sats & Suns, but Weekdays that it is "Unstaffed" - is there some subtle difference here that I am missing ?
Must be self-service or help yourself on weekdays Cheesy

Very useful - thanks everyone Smiley

As for penalty fares, SWT (South West Trains) don't operate them West of Salisbury and FGW (First Great Western)'s scheme is not yet in place.
According to the National Rail website, Penalty Fares are in operation from Axminster.  AFAIK (as far as I know), only SWT stop there.
I'd also be worried about someone at the gate at Exeter being difficult.

Thanks for all your help.  I think my easiest option is probably just to buy this over the phone before we go and collect it from the machine at Axminster (assuming the machine can issue telesales bookings for rangers!)

This summer, the family are going to be visiting Devon.  We're looking at travelling by train around Devon.  Have seen the Devon Day Ranger ticket but it isn't available online.

Just a hypothetical situation, if we were to travel from a SWT (South West Trains) station (probably Axminster) where the ticket office is closed but the ticket machine is working and penalty fares are in operation, how do we go about buying the ranger?  The journey we would be making would be Axminster to Exeter St Davids, then travelling further on FGW (First Great Western) (yay!).  Do we have to buy a single to Exeter then exchange this for a ranger as soon as possible (i.e. from the guard or at Exeter station)?  If we have to buy it at Exeter station, how do we get to the ticket office because surely the ticket barrier will gobble up our tickets?

I understand these can be bought in advance over the phone, but we won't be able to commit to dates until we get there.

Thanks

There aren't any local buses running at the moment either.

"Customers are advised that there is currently no planned road replacement service due to the expected conditions of roads in the area."

Is that why the number 8 and 9 buses (operated by First) have been going past my flat all day?  They serve both Clifton and Redland stations - couldn't First just allow train tickets to be used on their buses for the same route?

Thank you everyone for your replies - just what I thought.  Needed a little peace of mind as I've never used connecting services on an advance ticket before.

Hello, BruceyBonus, and welcome to the Coffee Shop forum!  Wink
Thanks Chris.  I've been registered and been reading the forum for quite a while now - just never actually got round to posting anything.

Hi

Just wondering if anyone knows the answer to my hypothetical questions.  I only ever make direct services so don't know the answers to these questions.

If I had a ticket, for Severn Beach to, say, Portsmouth & Southsea which was booked in advance showing the route "Great Western Only" and the validity "Booked Train Only".  I have a reservation coupon for a Bristol TM(resolve) to Portsmouth service.  If the train from Severn Beach to Bristol TM was cancelled, and there wasn't another service for 2 hours, what would I do?  There are no information screens, ticket machines or staff at Severn Beach.  Would I be expected to somehow phone FGW (First Great Western) to discuss how to get to Bristol TM?  What would they offer?  Also, would my ticket then allow me on the next train to Portsmouth (Without having to have a new reservation coupon printed)?

My second question is if I have a ticket for Portsmouth to Clifton Down, but the Portsmouth to Bristol TM is cancelled, I assume I could catch the next train (an hour later)?  But what if I then miss the last train of the day to Clifton Down (I'm planning on doing this on a Sunday)?  Would FGW then have to pay for me to get there on a bus?

Thanks in advance
