76  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Ticket machines - definitive list on: May 22, 2016, 13:00:27
I am not sure if annual season tickets can be bought or replaced at ticket machines. I have had to replace mine several times as it eventually wears out at the barriers so have gone to the manned ticket offices at Bath or Temple Meads to replace it. Im not sure if the ticket machines have somewhere where you scan the barcode on the photocard.
They can only issue weekly season tickets and cannot replace tickets.  There is no barcode scanner - you have to key the photocard number in using the touchscreen.

Some TOCs (Train Operating Company) (e.g. Southern) allow monthly tickets to be renewed at ticket machines.
77  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: National Railcard discounts - ongoing discussion, no longer date specific on: May 19, 2016, 19:53:25
The 16-25 Railcard has a 10:00 general start time.
The Two Together Railcard has a 9:30 general start time.
Family & Friends, and Senior, Railcards are invalid during off-peak times in the home counties.
The Disabled Railcard has no time limits.
Plus each has a list of exceptions, varying in length.

Is that not simple enough?
But it gets even more complicated.

The 16-25 is valid before 10:00 on tickets with a discounted price of ^12.00 or more.  Customers can opt to pay a minimum fare of ^12.00 if this works out cheaper than the undiscounted ticket.  Plus it's valid on Advance tickets regardless of the time or price.  Not valid in 1st class, except for Advance tickets.

P.S. Can the machines at Heathrow still only offer a limited range?  Personal question for me for Friday morning!
Unless they've been updated recently, the Heathrow Express passenger operated machines at T5 are like the machines at Paddington - LUL (London Underground Ltd) style machines vending a very basic range of tickets.  I would safely assume the other terminals all have similar machines.

In T5 only, the London Underground machines are actually operated by Heathrow Express.  They can even top up Oyster (Smartcard system used by passengers on Transport for London services) cards, printing a LUL receipt on Heathrow Express stock.  Again, selling the limited range of destinations usually available from LUL.

On very long journeys, seasons aren't available!

I discovered this last week - I thought you could get a season between any two stations....not any longer. Presumably only those costing less than the ALR (All Line Rover).
I was under the belief there is a formula (based on the Anytime fare) to calculate season ticket prices for combinations where one does not exist.  Is this not still the case?
80  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: All Line Rover: must-see destinations? on: May 17, 2016, 07:06:41
I'm puzzled by this dating business on an all line rover.  I thought the tickets were 7 or 14 sequential days rather that 4 in 7 or 8 in 15, so why the need to date at all, and how can dating loose you a day if you're on sequential days anyway?
I believe some ticket issuing systems redundantly issue a set of boxes with all rover tickets.  Most don't, but some do.

The only real issue is using the rover overnight on the final day, as technically the ticket's validity ends at 0429.  A normal day ticket would allow you to complete your journey the following day.
81  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: All Line Rover: must-see destinations? on: May 16, 2016, 21:16:13
Looking at berth supplements for the Caledonian Sleeper and Night Rivieria, would I be correct in assuming the following provided I hold a standard class railcard discounted all line rover valid for both days:

Caledonian Sleeper from Aberdeen to Euston: 1st class excess from railcard discounted standard anytime single (^103.95) to first class anytime single (^230.00) = ^126.05 plus a 1st class berth supplement ^43.00.  In which case, an advance berth at ^115ish would be much cheaper and simpler to book.

GWR (Great Western Railway) Sleeper from Penzance to Paddington: only the berth supplement of ^60.00, as the solo berths are considered standard class so my ticket is already valid.  A ^49 advance may work out cheaper, in which case the ALR (All Line Rover) almost feels wasted.
82  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: All Line Rover: must-see destinations? on: May 16, 2016, 18:37:25
Thank you everyone for the great suggestions.  Plenty of interesting places to visit and I'll definitely need to spend the weekend sorting through everything!

Next job is calculating the optimum route to get in as many places of interest as possible, whilst minimising hotel expenditure.  With Ryanair's wonderful ^9.99 fares, I may well fly to/from Edinburgh or Glasgow (journeys I've done a few times this year already) on one end of the trip to reduce wastage on the rover.
83  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / All Line Rover: must-see destinations? on: May 15, 2016, 20:31:26
As this is my final year with a young person's railcard, I'm planning on a ALR (All Line Rover) trip later this year to take advantage of the huge discount available on this ticket and burn some of my largely unused annual leave allowance.

I will start my week at either Cambridge or Cosham and don't need to return home at anytime if I'm doing 7 days.  If I end up going for 14 days, then I'll probably head home two or three times during the validity period.

Does anyone have any must-see destinations (both on and off the railway)?

On my list at the moment:
- Invesness to Thurso/Wick
- Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh
- Settle to Carlisle
- Ffestiniog Railway
- Possibly Cornwall again if I have a spare day or two (did most of the branches last year, but really liked St Ives)
84  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Coombe Junction - passenger numbers and platform facilities - ongoing discussion on: May 10, 2016, 17:26:48
Mr Murnaghan said: "The cost of the train journey will be just ^2.30 - or ^1.50 if you have a railcard and it is a rare opportunity to have a ticket from Coombe Junction, a collector's item."
I'm not too sure they're a collectors item.  Tickets can be purchased online or from any staffed NR» (Network Rail - home page) station.

I wonder how many passengers will actually be able to purchase a ticket on-board, considering the short journey time and the involvement of the guard in signalling on that line?

It seems to have been started by Chris Jeffrey (see his LinkedIn: https://uk.linkedin.com/in/hstchris)

I cannot see any information (including in the forum) which suggests it is run as a commercial operation.  There is limited information available, however.

87  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Peak restrictions on bank holidays on: April 27, 2016, 20:59:59
If you scroll down to the part labelled "UNPUBLISHED RESTRICTIONS", you'll see that...

Quote
Intended for use by computerised journey planners and online booking systems.

To determine whether a journey is permitted, the time restrictions shown below are applied to:
- The origin and destination of the journey
- All locations where a passenger changes trains during a journey
-The final destination of all trains travelled on during a journey (whether or not the passenger is travelling to that final destination)

Note that these data can not be used to determine time restrictions when breaking and
resuming a journey at an intermediate station.

This restriction code does not apply on the following dates/days:

[...]

from Mon 2 May 2016 until Sun 8 May 2016    Eased on these days: Su Mo .. .. .. .. Sa

...which to my mind says no restrictions apply to this ticket on the forthcoming Bank Holiday, May 2nd.
Perfect, thank you.  Didn't see that section!
88  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Great Western Railway Ticket Sale is now on - 300,000 cheap tickets available on: April 27, 2016, 20:56:20
Or you can get a 6way USB adapter & charge items to youir hearts content....one plug, 6 USB sockets!
But only for items that can charge off a USB cable, unlike the MacBook charger in bignosemac's earlier photo.

The MacBook charger alignment issue isn't just a problem on trains.  I had the same issue earlier this year while teaching a class in Glasgow: the plug socket was too close to the desk underneath!  Just managed to get through the presentation before the battery ran out.  I now carry the full length cable, which has a "normal" plug attached to a wire.
89  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Season ticket for odd length of time? on: April 27, 2016, 20:47:11
Can't think of any data protection issues.

The season ticket database would contain photocard number, name, address and there are options for phone number, email and marketing options should a customer want to provide that additional info*.

* naturally it also includes history of season tickets sold/replaced/duplicated/refunded/changed.
Is this database shared between TOCs (Train Operating Company)?  I'm just wondering as I originally got my photocard from LOROL (London Overground Railway Operations Ltd) and bought my tickets from either LOROL, Gatwick Express or Southern.  SWT (South West Trains) had absolutely no record of me or my tickets.  Have things changed more recently?

On the original topic, I calculated that I saved quite a bit by purchasing odd period season tickets.  Why pay for the Saturday and Sunday, or days of leave, if you have no plans to travel anywhere.  With extra days costing around ^15, compared to ^50 for an Anytime Day Return, it worked out pretty well.
90  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Peak restrictions on bank holidays on: April 27, 2016, 20:41:05
I'm looking at the Super Off-Peak Return from Cambridge to Temple Meads (see http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=CBG&dest=BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains)&rlc=YNG&ldn=1&tkt=SSR), for the coming bank holiday Monday.

The restriction text applies the restriction "Mondays to Fridays".

Does anyone know how this restriction is applied on bank holidays?  Unless I've missed something blindingly obvious, I cannot see any easement that would ease the restrictions for this ticket.
