Shipton's annual figures are shown in http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/smr/SIP.html (you have to be logged in to see them). Remember to divide by 2 for the number of arrivals and the number of departures (I don't suppose there's a significant difference), then divide by around 300 to give a number for a typical day, then see how you think they would split between the various trains. The local council map also have specific survey figures, and they may provide extra data like the journeys being made by the people who get on and off; we've found such data highly enlightening on the TransWilts (and not what we expected) and the council will give you their data ( FOI▸ ) whereas the TOC▸ probably won't (Commercial data) You could apply that methodology, but to save you all the time, I'd choke on a sandwich (made with flour from the adjacent Shipton Mill) if the number of people boarding/alighting passed double figures in a given week!

More pragmatically, AIUI▸ it's accepted practice that when 15xs stop at stations with very short platforms, passengers are asked to use (under supervision) the door in the rear cab.
The layout is different. The Class 150 cab door is separate to the actual cab, whereas on a Turbo passengers would have to clamber all over the drivers seat to get out! I've said before though, that I don't see why the operating instructions can't be altered so that the Guard exits the rear cab and locally operates one of the doors at the rear of the train using one of the outer butterfly handles.

That does indeed explain some of the rationale behind the decisions made, though one of the diagrams covered yesterday by a 2-car was OC504 which has no such impediment. And there have been occasions where units have been stepped up later in the 'halts' diagram so that, at least up until that point, a 3-car has been used. Those two reasons are what prompted my 'unacceptable FGW▸ !' statement.

Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Mis-information this morning

It sounds like a perfectly sensible decision was made to amend the calling patterns, though it's a shame that journeycheck etc., doesn't seem to be able to factor in the potential time that will be recovered from missed stops at station further down the route. If it's a case of one or two stations being omitted then the difference isn't too great, though if all stops from Oxford to Reading are taken out (including a potential layover at Didcot) then a train could potentially make back 25 minutes of that time.

Journey by Journey / Chiltern Railways services / Re: Chiltern Evergreen 3 project - ongoing discussion
|
on: January 19, 2013, 18:52:45

From the Buckingham Advertiser: The presentation came as Chiltern Railway announces major changes to its Evergreen 3 project to create a new Oxford to London Marylebone service via Bicester. The project, which has faced years of delay due to a public inquiry and a new legal challenge, is now to be combined with the East-West Rail link joining Bicester with towns such as Milton Keynes and Bedford.
Good to see the projects are being combined, as returning to complete Phase 2 just a couple of years later would not have been a good use of resources. Do we know more about timescales yet? Date of closure? Was anything further discussed at the OBRAG AGM▸ which I'd hoped to attend but couldn't make it.

Hi II how's the log going? Doesn't seem to be the problems there were.
Here's the first two weeks since most people returned to work on the 8th January. It started off very well with two days where all four diagrams were covered, but that hasn't happened since, and as 'ray951' posted, this week has been patchy. Surprisingly, today was the best of the week with three diagrams covered - I had suspected FGW▸ might use the snow as an excuse to keep them in the shed all day again! Set 106 has been the least active, only out on two of the ten days, whereas set 102 has been out every day.

I agree with you at least in part. Trouble is there are so many of the damn things around these days that it's very difficult to slot everything in between Reading and Didcot, and then again between Oxford Road Junction and Southcote Junction/Basingstoke. The timetable does work on paper, but not when freights run late (like they often do!).
I can only see this getting worse in the short term when the goods loops at Reading are temporarily removed from Easter, but the situation will improve when the flyunders/overs are completed as many more moves will be possible without causing a confliction.

Using Google streetview you can also see what an odd road Roger Dudman Way is. Set to become twice as busy later this year with two new housing developments nearing completion. I could see the parking spaces being removed and along with removal of the Panel Box building and other signalling related structures further down, there would probably be room for a new track along the existing side of Platform 2 and an improved 'proper' road access.
