1  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: The Golden Hind on a Friday evening.... on: February 20, 2013, 15:56:48
Once again, if the Gateline is set appropriately, none of the above is required.

I gave a random example earlier - lets try a specific one... Lets be specific.

Between 1745 and 1815 on platforms 1-6 at Paddington ^ all of which are either unbarriered or controlled by the same gates^you have the following scheduled departures.

Platform 5 1745 Swansea
Platform 1 1748 Cheltenham
Platform 2 1800 Bristol
Platform 4 1803 Golden Hind
Platform 3 1815 Swansea

Only one of them does not set down at Reading.  How can you properly control the barriers / gateline to stop reading passengers accessing the platform for the 1803?

Setting the specific rule and applying it to the gate array takes less than a minute.  Even less if you are well rehearsed!

I'm happy to enter into conversation with whoever thinks I am making a personal attack on swrural...

Might be quite difficult to be personal as i do not know this person.

However, and it has nothing to do with loving dogs, I am quite amazed that somebody could suggest that a Visually Impaired person should be separated from the very thing they depend on 24 hours a day.

The fact that somebody is more offended by MY post than that one says a lot...

This article provoked a hefty discussion chez swrural; not so much on the notice period, which was daft, but on the idea of dogs in sleeping compartments.

Our experience of dog owners is such that we would not care to be allocated a compartment in which dogs were allowed.

A blind person does not need his dog in the compartment, having been welcomed by the attendant, and shewn where facilities are.  Guide dogs are only needed where guidance is required.

It's the thought of those dog owners (not so much blind ones because they have large dogs) who would have these things on the bed, in the bed with them even, or even on the floor, where one might wish to place one's bare feet on getting out, that disgusts us.

Expecting hefty reaction from dog lovers, as sure as night follows day.

The dogs belong in the guard's compartment.   Angry

I hope the next guide dog you walk past takes a chunk out of your leg.

...and the access from the footbridge at the country end where the gate line is (virtually) never in use?

Edit: Changed 'rear' to 'country end'

And so if the Gateline is set properly, it will be in use...

Finally, the footbridge at the East End (by the LC (Level Crossing)) is getting an external makeover from NR» (Network Rail - home page).   Soon.

No you cant program a gate to stop drop off passengers only unless you set the gates to bar ALL tickets FROM Pad.  Obviously this would cause a riot at Reading as there isn't a specific gate array for a specific platform.

You could however set the gate array for the departing platform at Pad to reject all tickets TO Rdg.  This would simply stop anyone boarding with a ticket only to Rdg as the ticket would have to be seen by a Gateline Assistant.

Anyone else think "Steve Number Two" was incredibly rude when being interviewed?

Didn't even look up from his paper in between moaning.

Thanks, I don't go through that way very much. Again, any pics would be helpful.

In reply to RW, I whole heartedly agree that the 1723 down service ex-Truro should be retimed.  It is constantly late anyway and misses the 1727 Falmouth service at least once a week.  Even if it left Plymouth at the same time but dwelled at Truro until after the Falmouth has cleared Penwithers it would make the train more accessible to more commuters.

Just my 10 pence worth.

I need a forum member who regularly uses BPW» (Bristol Parkway - next trains) to do me a favour....  They have the coach letters on signs in the same design as found on the side of the coaches which are clamped onto the lamposts.  A picture or two would be REALLY helpful...

Thanks.
