1  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Tarka Line - Exeter to Barnstaple - services, passenger numbers, carriages, engineering works, incidents and events on: June 14, 2012, 12:32:41
The station only has 4/5 services a day out of 14 each way serving the line, which are early morning and in the evening.(check out timetable 34 on the FGW (First Great Western) website)

I've been trying to dig out a pre-2004 timetable (ie before Wessex introduced their first Devon Metro timetable), but can't find one - I think it was six or seven trains in each direction called at Lapford.

Would have made it from platform 9 if it was on time.

The first thing to say is that sorry, but you chose to take a risk on an unofficial connection (although I've never heard before of the station connection time also being applied to buses, I suppose it makes sense) and this time it didn't pay off. In that regard, you have no claim against FGW (First Great Western) at all. The argument of "yes but had the train been on time..." doesn't hold water - even if it had been you were cutting things extremely fine.

However if the conductor did behave as you described then that is inexcusable and as others have said above, you should write in to FGW giving full details of the train service as well as the name if he was wearing his badge. Experience has taught me though that the guards who lurk in the back cab, don't bother checking tickets and do everything they can to avoid having to deal with passengers can be outright hostile when anyone dares to knock on their door and ask for information or assistance. And are almost certainly not wearing their name badges either  Roll Eyes

Interestingly though a leopard can sometimes change its spots, though whether voluntarily or under duress from management I'm not sure. There is one particular Swansea guard I'm thinking of who a few years ago would never emerge from coach A or F (depending on the direction of travel, of course!). Something must have changed because I've seen him working a few trains recently (yes, I am sure it's the same person, I have a near perfect memory for names and faces which sometimes is more trouble than it's worth, quite honestly) and he's been very thorough with ticket checks as well as personable and helpful with the punters. Obviously something changed, although I don't know what!

Very interesting thought, as there a a few advertised Bus connections at EXD» (Exeter St Davids - next trains), for (yes you've guessed it) First Buses.   Bude, Okehampton, Exeter Airport all advertised - next would be to try and buy a through ticket  Roll Eyes

I've been to Banstaple a few times and the thing about Banstaple is that coming from the east it is much quicker to get the train to Tiverton and then be met by car for the journey to Barnstaple by road.  Many of the cars at the overfull P&R (Park and Ride) will be from Barnstaple.  However, IIRC (if I recall/remember/read correctly), there is a decent express bus from Tiverton to Barnstaple.  Extending this bus to the station would give much better access to the railway for journeys West and if the first bus of the day connected with the train at Tiverton, a decent am arival time in London would be possible, earlier than catching the first am train out of Barnstaple and cheaper I assume to implement than staffing the branch line an hour earlier.

I am not an expert on this area but it does seem that better bus/tain coordination could improve acess to a part of North Devon in need of economic development at low cost.

When visiting friends in Barnstaple (from Bath) my first though is to drive.  That woudl change if I could catch a train to Tiverton and connect to a fast bus, but having to go via Exeter, just tips teh balance away from public transport

I'm sure that if you do a comparison on fares to/from TVP -v- BNP (Barnstaple), usually going all the way to BNP will be the most cost effective - albeit not so many connection opportunities on the Tarka (Line from Barnstaple to Exeter) line.

if a FGW (First Great Western) decided to run a relief train from Reading to Cornwall in front of a service that is pick up only then the pick up only service doesn't have to stop!
I might be wrong, but I would think that it would still have to call at Reading otherwise it would count as a fail to call. If it's scheduled to call then it has to, otherwise it's a part cancellation.
there would have to be a not to call order issued but you wouldn't need to tell anyone on the train at Paddington, would catch out all the Reading lot who think they're clever getting on these services!
I'm more thinking how much Network Rail would fine for doing a not to call..

Quite often the busy services going west have Reading as pickup only.  Reading is simply not shown on the departure board at Paddington, although many regulars know that it will be an advertised pickup at Reading so still cram in

There is already rumour (and I stress the word RUMOUR) that FGW (First Great Western) may possibly run services to Honiton or Axminster. There has been no confirmation of this though!

Running Barnstaple to Axminster would be quite sensible, actually.

Ideal if it were ever to happen and Cranbrook open - Exeter Airport anyone!

8  All across the Great Western territory / Who's who on Western railways / Re: Customer facing staff - CRB checked on: October 05, 2009, 16:31:34
I am sure the TOC (Train Operating Company)'s have checked the legal requirement for CRB checks and would have them done if it was required.

Oh - I have no doubt they have looked into it.   Yet from what you say ... if, somewhere in the country there's a crew who run the same train every day, they WOULD need to be checked.  The "early" from Pwthelli ... picking up schoolkids for Harlech, with Driver Jones, Fireman Evans and Guard Roberts every day as they live in Nefyn.

Hi

In this instance quoted CRB checks would still not be needed (IMHO (in my humble opinion)), as the staff of the operating Company are doing their job are not acting specifically and/or in the legal term of "in loco parentis". (Handy legal term though  Roll Eyes  It is those individuals acting under those terms that the checks are carried out on - ie those acting "in place of parents".

Id love to know what people expect to find in a case of luggage!  How ob earth do yu know which bag to pick out of the 20.

Even worse, if you found your bag wasmissing as you went to get off of the train.... how would you deal with it, as the train manager would be nowhere to be seen before the train left the station.

Well I ensure that I take off any luggage tags from an airport now as soon as I am off the threshold, that would have divulged where I had been (especially if i've drawn the short straw of travelling to/from a London airport) if couldnt fly from Exeter or Bristol.

One comment from the insurance company on my last claim surmised...
..anywhere / LHR usually business travel
..anywhere / LGW usually leisure/holiday travel
..No luggage tags - domestic, either business or leisure

As to what they expect is anyone's guess

Have you seen the "bus fleet" I am forced to travel on  Grin

At least with the Pacers, on the Barny Branch, we can visit the "facility", and without damage to neck etc, attend to the sea-sickness at the same time - of course with very careful aim on both counts Roll Eyes
11  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Lone Travellers disadvantaged on: August 19, 2009, 11:49:14
Hi

In particular reference to 1./2.

I have had, and have heard of other terrible experiences travelling on certain legs of the journey from the Westcountry to London. Primarily the services with stops at Westbury, so much so that in some instances, I now only travel with what I can carry personally without trolley and/or wait for the more direct services TAU» (Taunton - next trains)-RDG(resolve)-PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains).

Why?  Certain individuals board TAU, go up and down the train ascertaining which luggage has been stowed in the limited luggage facility - Get off at Westbury, and catch the next departure back to TAU.  By the time the legit traveller has reached PAD - too late.

So I cram everything into my 9kg "dolly trolley", and if the weather turns bad whilst away and have not packed accordingly, buy more at the destination.

While it would be possible for me to carry all my luggage with me to the buffet, and/or toilet, as previous posters have already stated, the carriages are crammed with little if any room for the human body to squeeze through, let alone carrying ones luggage et-al back and forth.

TM(resolve)'s etc would definately have something to say, if all passengers, even on one train we to start doing this.  (How about a test on the 18:03 ex-PAD on a Friday night!)

12  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Problems with car parking at Liskeard since charges were introduced by FGW on: August 12, 2009, 15:28:01
Hi

Or alternatively those doom breeding journalists should perhaps look at it from the angle of :-

"Motorist's squeeze into the smallest parking spaces and congest town, after FGW (First Great Western) asked them to pay for the priviledge of parking on their land, and taking away valid parking spaces for those travelling on their services"

I would doubt very much that a ^2 per day charge for parking at the station on top of the fare would be any deterrent to the genuine travelling FGW customer.

Perhaps the journalists should start doing true investagative work, and ask those clogging up the streets, where they used to park previously and why their habits have suddenly changed.

13  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Changes to FGW complimentary service? on: August 11, 2009, 08:56:00
Hi

you can accomodate physical disability but when it comes to the point granny cant make the journey alone because new street confuses her thats life.  We cant cater for evrything all the time

If that's your argument, then why should we try to accommodate physical disability? After all empty wheelchair spaces take up room where seats could be located, and delays can occur when trying to load or unload a wheelchair bound passenger. Staff costs could be reduced as you would need less people on hand to assist them, and in the case of blind passengers then FGW (First Great Western) could save lots of money not having to print out special Braille copies of its safety information. There would also be no need to spend money on hearing induction loops on platforms and at ticket offices, and trains would be so much easier to design if wheelchairs were banned.

The trouble is, so people actually believe that would be a sensible way forward. Fortunately for them (and those who have stated on here that elderly people should be left to their own devices, or rely on somebody driving them everywhere), FGW and the wider world cares a little bit more for their well-being.

Take the Great Malvern example, where you have a town with well over the average age per head of the population, and running a wider variety of through trains might indeed make business sense sometimes. I bet a hefty amount of revenue has been lost from elderly passengers who used to travel from the south coast, Hampshire, Berkshire or Oxfordshire to the north west or Scotland. A choice of direct train, even if it was only once or twice a day, has now been taken from them.

Well mother could be included as a granny by age, but not by agility or health playing 4 rounds of 18 holes golf per week.

However has to be said that the direct XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) Bournemouth via Basingstoke - Reading to Leeds and beyond was a useful tool for her to go an see the family "up North".   However, in order to get a direct connect on the return to Reading for her trip in July, would have had to be at Leeds for 6am! and a premium price of ^125. (Yes there were alternatives for less, but with changes in New Street/Reading etc)

Flybe (again) from Southampton>Leeds, ^3.19 each way and with taxes, insurance and carry on luggage ^86 all in

Afraid to say that was the preferred option
14  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Tarka Line - Exeter to Barnstaple - services, passenger numbers, carriages, engineering works, incidents and events on: June 17, 2009, 09:08:11
Hi

No, it would cost a fortune and run empty till Exeter!!

back to the question does anyone want a direct service or is this a pointless convo... people who live in or near barns please

Short answer, yes, but know it will never happen.

Even the thought of an 05:55 from BNP (Barnstaple)>EXD» (Exeter St Davids - next trains), you would have to get the stock there in the first place to run it, so again won't happen

BNP> TAU» (Taunton - next trains) will never reopen, the A361 North Devon link has been built on much of the trackbed, and bridges removed closer to Norton Fitzwarren

Perhaps the next suggestion would be to have North Devon International Airport at Chivenor  Shocked
15  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Tarka Line - Exeter to Barnstaple - services, passenger numbers, carriages, engineering works, incidents and events on: June 16, 2009, 11:18:47
Hi

I have indeed seen passengers at all three stations mentioned, predominantely the advertised services due to stop as opposed to the "request" stops.

Copplestone is also increasing in passenger numbers, I would suggest, with the new housing developments happening there.

they are doing alot of advertising on this line, including tarka walks i think the main problem with the line is the wait near barny to enter the single line section that you sometimes get.. 30 mins is the record for me

On such a long wait I would assume was at Eggesford, as the last token section, and that the train from Barny was obviously delayed on its way up.  Same happens at Crediton in either direction, some timetables have an advertised wait there, (not quite long enough to use the very nice Cafe).  On the whole the waits are bearable even for regular passengers, but with only 2 passing loops available for the 39 miles of the route, its unavoidable if any services are delayed in either direction.
