31  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Can you collect tickets purchased on-line on the train on: September 11, 2011, 09:08:32
I not sure it works that well on the DLR (Docklands Light Railway) they do have problems with people travelling short journeys.  Also the penalty fare is curently ^50 and Boris is proposing to increase it to ^80 which is quite an incentive to validate your oyster before travel.

All the distances on the heathrow airport branch are in kilometres

Route knowledge is for a route.  A swansea driver will come to london on average 4 out of 5 days.  Stopping at individual stations is not a requirement to keep up your route knowledge.

35  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Cotswold Line redoubling: 2008 - 2011 on: September 05, 2011, 22:46:24

I suppose they'll try and jack up the fares on the Cotswold Line soon.

This has been covered before.  They cannot jack up the fares as most of them are Anytime Day returns which are regulated.  Its just a quirk of privatisation that the cheltenham route had anytime open (1 month) returns which were not regulated and the cotswold route had anytime day return fares which were regulated and could only increase by a set amount each teay.

37  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Debit cards and train tickets ........ What is going on? on: September 02, 2011, 09:43:13
Defintely the banks problem.  The card must be marked as no offline transactions.

But it has raised digits so can be done via the old swiper paper thing

I am afraid this is a con on part of the banks.  They are getting rid of the old electron cards which were for online use only and replacing them with debit cards with raised numbers.  However they put markers on the new cards which only allow them to work for an on line transaction.

i shouldnt imagine the individual has appeared in court and given a discharge already. you must of read about a different case.
a defendent has to be issued with minimum 6 weeks notice of a court appearance to prepare your legal defence, and such.

are you sure about that.  Plenty of cases already been concluded in London for people involved in the riots.
40  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Turbo refresh started. on: August 09, 2011, 19:06:10
Because then H&S (Health and Safety) requires fresh air to be pumped at a certain force through the carriage - and rechnically, its out of serrvice if this fails.

Sorry I dont understand this comment.  I am not aware of any such H&S requirement.
41  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Off Peak/Super Off Peak on: August 04, 2011, 13:04:43
Was looking at fares from Swindon to Salisbury.

I had always assumed a Super Off Peak would be cheaper than an Off Peak.  However for the same trains I am being quoted ^26 for an Off Peak or ^35 for a Super Off Peak.  (Or as low as ^9 for advance singles).

Seems the names are more confusing than I thought.

^26 off peak valid via bath only.  ^35 super off peak valid via Reading or Bath

There has never been a shore supply at Paddington for Coaching stock.  The shore supplies are for HST (High Speed Train) which operate at a different voltage.

The 08 is passed for the main line which it has been operating on quite regularly lately.
43  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: What is the point of a day return? on: August 04, 2011, 12:58:51
You have to have day returns.  They should be only for short journeys up to say about 30 miles in length.  Anything longer should be the one month return.

If you abolished day returns then a ticket from Worle to Weston Super Mare would be valid for one month.  To stop the ticket being reused you would need to have a lot of extra staff.  In order to do a full check between these two stations on an HST (High Speed Train) would probably need 4 staff.  For such a small fare that would not be justified.

The other option would be to increase the penalty fare to something like ^100 and have make the passenger cancel their own ticket before boarding at Worle.  Caught with out a ticket or one that has not been validated would get the penalty fare.
44  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Taplow Exeter Day Returns on: August 03, 2011, 14:55:22
This is because of the network area.  There are two sensible routes for this journey.  Either go to reading and then via the berks and hants via Tauntonto exeter  or reading then basingstoke salisbury honiton to exeter.

As the network railcard only covers the via honiton option you need one fare for that route and another fare for the via taunton option.  Has always been this way.  London to Exeter tickets also have via Taunton and via Honiton options.

If there had never been a network area most likely there would be only one ticket.

The super off peak return via honiton is actually only a day return.
45  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Night Riviera sleeper service - Cornwall to London on: August 03, 2011, 11:08:25
The normal method of working is for one 57 to drag the stock into pad with another 57 attached dead at the rear.  That 57 then takes the train to penzance and the 57 left on the blocks returns to OOC (Old Oak Common (depot)) ready to pick up the coaches in the morning.

They are not really supposed to use the 08.  It will only be used when they are a 57 short.  One of the problems is that the 08 does not have train supply and if you are uising it in the morning then the 57 on the block will have to be kept running - which is not allowed pumping diesel fumes into the station area.  Either that or you have no train supply which means no teas coffee AC etc.
