Just as a matter of interest, would the one working power car on the HST (High Speed Train) have to be the front one, or could it be either?
AFAIK (as far as I know) either - got stuck in Truro last year when the front car failed - driver tried to go with the rear car but the wheels spun up trying to get up the 20ft gradient to the southern portal.

Having a nose around the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) (or should that be DAFT) Station Comparator site St Germans Cornwall had 29540 passengers in a year, who are served by 13 down trains a day (many of which are two coach trains), yet Lelant Saltings had a foot fall of 653 IN A YEAR but is served by 22 down trains a day many of which in summer are 4 carriage long.
Strange that 100's of people park Cars at Lelant Saltings every day in the Summer and crowd the platform, if not catching the train, there must be a heck of a lot of Bird Watchers!!!!! Grin

Also worth a look are the figures for Tyndrum Lower (17) against Upper Tyndrum (7542) to me the whole thing is a F***e Huh

If you read the notes that accompany the report (which it strongly urges you to) it identifies posssible errors in the statistics where tickets have to be attributed. The Lelant Saltings one is probably down to the P&R (Park and Ride) ticket sold being valid on the whole of the St Ives branch, and therefore sales aren't attributed to any particular station. (Can anyone confirm this?) Similar on the Looe line, a high proportion of tickets are a line ranger and thus not attributable to footfall at Looe.

The Rail Regulator is aware of the shortfalls in the data and is looking to see whether they can be overcome in future years. I'm sure anyone using the stats to plan future services will also understand the shortcomings.

Yep - ranger tickets, no singles issued.
The platform there is pretty long and is absolutely packed in the summer months.

It's many years since I worked in Lelant but I thought (1) the parking attendant issued combined tickets (2) the ranger ticket included a parking charge whether or not you used the park 'n ride.

The figure of 653 must be local people travelling beyond St Erth Huh?

So what are the full ranger prices?
I'll be living in St Ives for 6 weeks and commuting to Carbis Bay with occasional weekend trips beyond St Erth

I can get to Plymouth for ^6 but birdwatching at Lelant is ^4 - nonsense - it's not even 3 miles.
Everyone who 'knows' does the Hayle ticket. I also see a lot of groupsaves in the summer.

St Ives has full ticket office facilities and can issue railcards - unfortunately there's also a ranger ticket machine at the platform issuing the ^4 tickets.

A Hayle season ticket ??

274  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: December Timetable on: September 25, 2008, 01:28:48
Arghhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!

The December timetables appear on the planner at http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/

St ives to Plymouth used to be 1:55- 1:59, from December it's 2:15 - 2:25.

UP's from PNZ  start 10 minutes later and arrive even later.

The evening 'Down' XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise))'s have disappeared.

Deja vue again - lots of standing only from Plymouth on 15x one or two car, Voyagers missing Coach B.

Life is good.

Gunnislake gets an extra trip in the evening and also a through train from and to Penzance, the one to Penzance is also an extra mainline service 1814 from Plymouth 2020 into Penzance

I presume this service will replace the XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) 17:55 out of PLY» (Plymouth - next trains) which has to sit at reds at St Austell, Truro & Camborne following the FGW (First Great Western) 17:25 HST (High Speed Train) from PLY which runs like a slug meaning I have to catch a bus to complete my journey.

276  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Barrier strike on: September 24, 2008, 01:13:49
Slow approach to Camborne on the PZ 9:30 XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) Monday morning as someone had driven into the town side of the barriers.

277  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Animals On The St Ives Line (23/09/2008) on: September 24, 2008, 01:08:30
Train hit a dog and injured it's leg, the traincrew picked up the dog and took it to Penzance where a vet was called, last I heard the dog had it's leg amputated but was recovering as well as could be expected!

Was trying to work out what could have been hit as cattle are not common on that route - paragliders get in the way sometimes but dogs commonly race the train up and down the incline past West Cornwall Golf course at Lelant.

I believe I've seen a mini bowser at Plymouth similar to the one at Penzance but never seen it connected to anything.
