Line problem: between Par and Plymouth.
Owing to lightning having damaged equipment between
Par and Plymouth trains have to run at reduced speed on all lines.
Impact:
Train services running through these stations are returning to normal but some services may still be delayed at short notice. Normal services will be provided as soon as possible. Message Received :15/04/2012 00:01

Just a different outlook, maybe i've not read the article fully... But is it possible these passengers didn't know of the existence of the TVM (Ticket Vending Machine)??

From my original post:

Quote
There is an automated ticket machine at Exmouth station, but Karen says she did not think to use this as she had always previously paid the conductor, and, as the main station building was closed for the evening, she had parked her car in the car park and walked straight on to the platform without going past it.

 Roll Eyes

Confusingly...

The TVM is available when the Station is closed http://s0.geograph.org.uk/geophotos/01/11/26/1112673_95bd6cf0.jpg

but

FGW (First Great Western) says it isn't

Staffing hours are, of course, not necessarily the same as booking office opening hours. Staffing hours for Exmouth from NRES (National Rail Enquiry Service) (I know, your guess is as good as mine, but it would appear the staffing hours are longer than the booking office hours):

Quote
Full-time
Monday-Saturday 06:40-20:20
Sunday 10:25-18:25
Monday-Friday 05:30-22:45
Saturday 06:45-22:45

I use Exmouth quite a lot and there are no staff there after the booking office closes.
The booking office closes in the same manner as St Erth and Dawlish - the whole building gets locked up and you have to walk around the building to get to the platform.

When the building is closed you have to walk through the adjacent bus station or the car park and enter the platform by a gate which is unlocked - they should have done what they did at Topsham - put the TVM (Ticket Vending Machine) in the passenger shelter.

First time I used the station I thought the trains had been cancelled as there appeared to be no way to get onto the platform.

So can you give 2 at Dawlish Warren if the signal at the end of the loop is red for another train to pass on the up main?

Was held at Dawlish Warren today for a passing HST (High Speed Train) - as soon as it had passed Guard gave 6 and the Driver replied 6.

Rather than just drawing forward we carried on as the signal must have cleared.

Did the combo not have a barrier vehicle ?

Going off topic somewhat, but without looking it up, anyone know/care to guess where the world's largest operating pipe organ is? Small clue (the pipe organ in a pub is what made me think of this): it's not a church or cathedral. And it's not a million miles away from the world's absolute largest pipe organ, although that one's part-knackered and only semi-functional.

In the 60's I used to service Hammond organs and had a customer in St Austell who had built his house around a large pipe organ - had full timpani too.

I see WG are out of Bretonside in Plymouth also.

39  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Western Greyhound Pulls Out of St Austell Rail Station on: March 26, 2012, 01:09:35
Not convinced about the Banksman reason.  First (who are usually the most obsessed about health and safety) are continuing to use the Interchange at St Austell, and Western Greyhound has a number of routes that regularly require the driver to undertake reversing moves on the public highway without assistance (eg: Gurnard's Head on services 507/508, and all services at Penzance Bus station)

I'll ignore the gender based comments on drivers beyond pointing out there is no scientific evidence that a person's gender has any impact on their competency as a driver.

I presume you've noticed that St Ives has had a Banksman for many years.

I know a WG driver very well and will ask him for his opinion when I see him.

40  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Western Greyhound Pulls Out of St Austell Rail Station on: March 24, 2012, 01:34:55
I believe it is due to lack of banksman and health and safety, as has been several near misses with people walking behind reversing buses

If this is the case I wonder if the remaining services will start from near the old Police Station behind the Railway Station as they did when the Bus Station was closed.

And how many millions have recently been spent (over a looooong period) upgrading the place Huh

Some Visitors might find it more convenient to start/end their adventures from Par station - I visit Heligan/Mevagissey/Charlestown/Fowey and quite often end up at Par to get fish 'n chips at Val's Plaice.

I was on a quiet carriage this evening in First Class.. There were some people standing who weren't first class customers (or they'd have sat down!!) and some were talking.. The guy on the table next to me told them to be quiet as it was a quiet carriage...It almost made me stop listening to my mp3 player but I know that no one apart from me can hear what I'm listening too as I've checked it out it before.. But I did test it again at that point... He didn't say anything to me tho anyway so all good...

Well all good apart from the train manager not making an appearance or checking tickets..But that's not for this topic  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes

In Cornwall the usual TM(resolve) announcement is no mobile phones and mp3 players kept to a reasonable level.

When were the barriers installed at St. Ives Station? I was there on holiday last June and there were no barriers there then.

Portable crush barrier type of thing.
44  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: St Erth Station - incidents, facilities, improvements and awards (merged topic) on: March 10, 2012, 22:31:44

I visited the site at St Erth today, along with visits to Lelant Saltings, Carbis Bay and St Ives stations. Good to see a fair few people about wherever I went, with the 2-coach Class 150 unit well-loaded.

Going to be interesting to see how the extended park & ride works out.
In winter the service is 1x153, March to high season is 1x150, high season is 2x150 .
In summer the 2x150 are PACKED and despite ticket facilities at the Saltings car park and two Conductors St Ives is also barriered to enable revenue collection.
The service is maxed out at 2tph and even with a rumoured extra 153 I wonder if all these potential extra visitors are going to actually get to St Ives.
Would be great if they did as access and parking in St Ives is woeful - the rail link puts you right at a beach and very close to the town centre.

Would also help while there is cash sloshing around - a disabled ramp from St Ives station to the path below the station leading to the town  - the Station has a disabled toilet which I've never seen used as it's sort of isolated by steps and steep hills.

Also a huge sign to the path - 'town & beaches this way'...so many people head out via the car park.

45  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: First Great Western orders revamp & roll-out of WiFi network across 23 stations on: February 21, 2012, 01:14:50
I personally have never used a station wifi, find that at most major stations the 3G network will be considerably faster and I don't need to log in!

I've got unlimited Internet on my phone using GiffGaff and WiFi at a station would only be of use if it were underground or they paid me to use it.
On a train might be useful if the signal was good.
