61  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Heart of Wales - mostly closed until end of August 2020 on: July 06, 2020, 09:48:03
From National Rail Service Disruptions

Quote
Structural damage to the bridge between Pontarddulais and Hendy Junction means it is unsafe for trains to pass over the bridge.

Trains are unable to run between Llandrindod and Llanelli until repairs are complete. This may take up to 8 weeks. Road transport will be provided between Llanelli and Llandrindod.

Buses will run:
From Llanelli, calling at all stations to Llandrindod then continue to Shrewsbury, setting down at intermediate stations as required.
From Llandrindod to Swansea

Now - forgive my geography but why are trains unable to run between Llandrindod and Llandeilo?  As I recall, there are loops at Between Craven Arms and Llanelli at Llandrindod, Llanwrtyd and Llandeilo, and Pontardulais is between Llandeilo and Llanelli.    Could it be ... not that trains are unable to run as far as Llandeilo from the Shrewsbury / Craven Arms end, but that Transport for Wales are choosing not to do so?

This in addition to this BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) article

Several Welsh stations are to lose train services for a "short time" because their platforms have raised social distancing concerns.

They are either too short or too curved to allow the opening of two train doors, Transport for Wales (TfW) said.
Services will no longer stop at Llanfairpwll and Valley on Anglesey, Conwy, Gilfach Fargoed in Caerphilly county or Sugar Loaf in Powys.

Err ... don't think so at Llanfairpwll at least - nice straight platform, plenty long enough to open at least 2 doors on each of 2 carriages, and perhaps more - see pictures at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Llanfairpwll_railway_station .

I'm getting the distinct feeling of porkies (or does that translate to sheepies) from Transport for Wales.  Changes for their operational convenience disguised under excuses which let them lay the blame elsewhere?

There is a reduced COVID service on the Heart of Wales Line at the moment (Sunday service) and the rwo trains in each direcrion which are running are both scheduled to change over crews with each other so it makes sense for the Shrewsbury crews from the North work to Llandod and return with the same unit.    The Carmarthen crews at the southern end would have to taxied past the block to Llandeilo or Pantyffynnon but wouldn't have a unit to work  with.

"Due to damage to the overhead electric wires between Bristol Parkway and Newport South Wales all lines are blocked.
Impact:
Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or diverted. Disruption is expected until 14:30 01/06."

The 0432 Southampton to Wentloog Freightliner service seems at a stand at Severn Tunnel West, possibly since 0700 since it passed the east portal at 0652, running almost an hour early.

I think it is actually in the tunnel having just entered the signal section up to Severn Tunnel West.

It reported hitting something followed by a loud bang and a flash
64  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: wires down at Patchway on: June 01, 2020, 09:47:35
Radio Bristol are reporting,

just wish RB would get the facts correct.

RB state its effecting GWR (Great Western Railway) and cross country and trains maybe diverted

Just wondering if the Portsmouth to Cardiff services can still run or are these services cancelled?

Portsmouth to Cardiffs start/terminate Bristol TM(resolve) with passengers advised to travel to/from Cheltenham /Gloucester and then use TFW/XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) services.     South Wales to Londons diverted via Gloucester
65  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / Re: Late change - extra service from 18th May 2020 on: May 16, 2020, 18:20:41
The service, since reconfigured, has seen ecs from Westbury first thing and to Westbury last thing in the day. I am not sure if Weymouth have a GWR (Great Western Railway) crew based there any more.

The late additions are services that were in the pre-virus WTT (Working Time-Table) hence the use of the 2Oxx and the 2Vxx codes rather than the 2Zxx codes

The last I heard Weymouth had a very small number of GWR Guards.   The Westbury driver of the last one down at night stays down there, does any shunting required and works the first one back up in the morning.    Any others are taxied.
66  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Cotswold Line - 2020 cancellation and amendments log on: May 16, 2020, 18:14:47
I thought GW (Great Western) is awash with IETs (Intercity Express Train) with the revised timetable.

Yes ... but I suspect a last minute problem - lots of them around but too many tucked up in bed for the weekend and no spare hanging around at Paddington.   By starting out at Reading, there was an extra 30 minutes to get a train ready and being Reading that happened to be a 3 car turbo.

I have an update (received yesterday) from GWR (Great Western Railway) on IET maintenance - not had a chance to post it with appropriate visibility as the section "above the fold" is overfull today.

All the 800s had to be taken out of service for inspection due to a crack on a deflector plate found on several units.  They should, hopefully, be back in service by Monday following remedial work.
67  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Transport for Wales - emergency timetable overview, South Wales on: May 01, 2020, 17:55:06
Sticky topic overview - data from Transport for Wales summaries, as at 1st May 2020

I have covered services that overlap with lines that GWR (Great Western Railway) [normally] operate - so this is South Wales south of Shrewsbury.

Cardiff Central - Shrewsbury - Chester,Holyhead / Crewe,Manchester
No direct services are in operation between Cardiff Central and Holyhead.
Customers are asked to use Manchester services between Cardiff Central and Shrewsbury

Maesteg – Cheltenham Spa
A reduced service will be in operation with an addition earlier morning service to enable key workers to get to work

Cardiff – Swansea -  Carmarthen
A reduced service will be in operation

Carmarthen - Milford Haven - Pembroke Dock - Fishguard
A much reduced service is in operation
Services will still link in with ferry operations.

Llanelli – Shrewsbury ( via Heart of Wales )
A reduced service will be in operation with one service per day in each direction

Local Cardiff and Valleys services
A reduced service will be in operation

Cardiff Bay service
A reduced service will be in operation with two services per hour

Coryton - Radyr via City line
A service will be in operation every 90 minutes in each direction.

It is basically the Sunday service with additional morning services for essential services

I think there is one being used between Plymouth (North Road) and Laira depot as well, but can't go and check as its more than two miles from home Tongue

A 150 has been used at Plymouth  although a 5 Car IET (Intercity Express Train) has been seen.   Plymouth can't drive 143s

Over 60 short formed IETs (Intercity Express Train) today.
I presume that the coronavirus is a new excuse.

No reason is given on JourneyCheck.

There is likely to be a lot of presumption and riding rough over people's wants and needs in coming days as people and authorities struggle to cope with a new order and do there best - whether it be the best for the population's survival, the best for the planet and its resources, or the best for them and their people as we go through and come out of this. Conspiracy theories and real hardships will abound.    Discussion OPEN on this - but I'll move it to our "frequent posters" board if it takes off.

At a time at which the Government and all medical experts are imploring us to practice "social distancing", the list of services which GWR (Great Western Railway) are shortforming today has reached 124 already.

…….make that 162 (with the generous assumption that GWR's Journeycheck is accurate)

A cynic may suggest that they are doing this for their own financial benefit, but I'm sure that's not the case, just a coincidence.

Possibly deliberate due to the low number of passengers.   Another example,  Cardiff to Portsmouths (curtailed Salisbury due landslide)  reduced from 5 to 3 Cars (166 only)
72  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Engineering closure - Castle Cary to Taunton, 14 to 27 March 2020 on: March 11, 2020, 09:51:21
Does anybody have information as to why the diversionary route via Yeovil is not being used on this occasion? I can't find any additional works on that route listed.

Because the trains would be unable to call at Taunton or Tiverton Parkway

74  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2020 - TransWilts cancellation and amendment log on: February 20, 2020, 09:07:30
The 17:50 Gloucester to Westbury (instead of Southampton Central because of the landslip) service was cancelled throughout owing to disruption from the incident at Keynsham earlier.

Sadly, a lack of information at Melksham (I sound like a well worn record!).   On the Melksham Rail User Group Facebook page, I read

And cancel the 19.06 last night back to trowbridge so had to wait for the 21.09 train .as the bus x34 didnt come at 17.56 .from where I was waiting at melksham opposite the McDonald.

Little wonder that people drive, is it?
I suggest that every time there is a cancellation and no travel information on Journey Check,  GWR (Great Western Railway) should be tweeted to ask for such information

75  Journey by Journey / Portsmouth to Cardiff / Re: Landslip between Salisbury and Romsey on: February 18, 2020, 22:37:19
March 31st is the estimate for complete re-opening according to NRE(resolve) although one line can be opened for Single Line Working allowing one Cardiff to Portsmouth and vice versa per hour to run.    The Romsey circle will be bustituted.
Seems to be no logical reason why the SWR» (South Western Railway - about) service can’t operate Romsey to Romsey?  If they don’t it’ll seem as if they’re giving up just a bit too easily...

Paul

Could be that the unit will be the wrong side being based at Salisburry
