I think you only have to go through the barriers if you want to get from an A to B end or vice versa.  If that is correct you should be able to go down to the wrong end of the platform and walk along to the right end.

Hmmm ... not quite how I think it is, but I've typically now had more than a few minutes to dash around, so I'm hesitant to be dogmatic.

Tried
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/stations_destinations/SME/BHM_StationPlan.aspx?rtnloc=BHM
but find it less than helpful - doesn't seem to be current.

you need to look at Network Rail, who managed BHM.

And number 9 has signage in the style of the National Express Group, C2C colours, but it doesn't appear to be a C2C station.

8.  Taunton, north side.

There's always a Taunton!

Luckily there hasn't been an epidemic in TVSC» (Thames Valley Signalling Centre - about)

The Acton workstation signaler's relief didn't turn up, the outgoing bobby worked over his time as there was no one else available to run the station, so it had to be shut down.
440  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: "Shortage of train crew" 28th August on: August 29, 2016, 08:19:54
Point of order, why all the talk of RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers)?

The shortage of DRIVERS is as ASLEF» (Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen - about) matter, guards don't matter as any manager can operate a train.
441  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: More dangerous overcrowding to the Westcountry on: August 25, 2016, 14:21:35
There is always a standby coach for the 15.27 and 17.00 standby coach for Exeter St David's - Barnstaple direct.

The coach is rarely used as people prefer to squeeze on to the train as it takes 10-15 minutes longer by road.

During high season it is easier to cherry pick people off platform 1 and on to the coach, usually on average 30-35 passengers, especially those with bikes and luggage, as they haven't boarded the train yet - mostly having come off the mainline connection.

During high season there has also been a coach available for the 08.43 and 09.43 Barnstaple - Exeter St David's departures. GWR (Great Western Railway) control have been known to beg Barnstaple station to force people on to the coach to justify the expense of hiring one.  Again people just won't take the coach and would rather stand on a packed train (and complain) than risk missing their connection; and I think this coach may been withdrawn as a result.

It's in the latest Retail Circular; along with the Ride Cornwall fare increase (£13).
443  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Fire at St Erth - 08 Aug 16 on: August 09, 2016, 02:22:17
As of 00.50, there needs to be an inspection of the infrastructure - especially signalling equipment and electrical supply.
The St Ives branch is likely to remain closed, with St Erth box switched out; the main line is top priority.
444  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Wot I Wont on: August 01, 2016, 20:31:58
As a matter of interest, Pb_devon, does the station cafe at Barnstaple still offer a live departure screen on the premises?

Ooh...I think so, but my memory might be playing up.

No, it doesn't.
As mentioned before as it's a single line station with a (near) hourly departure, there isn't much point.
445  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Vintage bus cavalcade marks closure of bus stations in Plymouth and Exeter on: July 17, 2016, 21:15:07
Plymouth's new bus station is only a COACH station for SCHEDULED services, with bays for 7 coaches only.

In addition, there will be 2 drop off/pick up bays for TOURIST coaches on a roundabout at the bottom of Royal Parade; all scheduled BUS services will depart from the "inadequate shelters on a street".

There will be NO parking available at the coach station - and no alternatives yet available for the HGVs that currently use Bretonside.

Exeter's plans - that I've read about - are broadly the same.

Problem with the split railway are any TOC (Train Operating Company) staff trained to clip and scotch points and wind points as I was when at Sutton? Presumably you have to get a Network Rail manager from somewhere or could the St Erth Signalman do it?

Guards who sign Exeter St Davids - Barnstaple are.
