Do SWT▸ actually give you anything different in 1st? Their website doesn't mention anything - not even a cup of tea!?
You get a seat and a curtain in 1st on SWT. On a few early morning services to London on the Weymouth-London line I think the trolley will give you a free tea or coffee but nothing else.

The shut down of many airports across the UK▸ starts from 1pm today: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8685193.stmAirports across much of the UK are to close between 1300 and 1900 BST as volcanic ash drifts across Europe, the air traffic authority Nats has said.
In England, East Midlands, Manchester, Liverpool, Doncaster, Humberside and Carlisle airports will be hit by the Civil Aviation Authority's no-fly zone. Airports in Northern Ireland, Prestwick near Glasgow, those on Scottish islands and the Isle of Man are also affected.
London airports are unaffected, while Dublin remains open on Sunday. Planes have been grounded in other parts of the Irish Republic. Travellers are being advised to check with their airline before leaving home. The volcano has become more active again in recent weeks. The UK no-fly zones are set out by the Civil Aviation Authority using Met Office data. Forecasts suggest the ash cloud could extend further over the UK during Monday and Tuesday.

All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Protests planned over bus timetable changes

First Bus are making further changes to bus services in the Bath and Bristol areas on the 23rd of May: http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southwest/bristol/service_changes/?item=5701&show=1But they aren't going down too well in Bath: http://www.thisisbath.co.uk/news/Protests-planned-bus-timetable-changes/article-2157150-detail/article.htmlResidents from opposite sides of Bath will be staging a protest over changes to the city^s bus services tomorrow.
Operator First is making changes to more than a dozen services in the city later this month, with increased congestion and the likely closure of Pulteney Bridge among the factors behind the shake-up.
But the firm has angered families in Larkhall and Fairfield Park in the north of the city, and in Combe Down to the south, with plans to force passengers to take two buses instead of one on some journeys.
Campaigners and politicians - one of whom has dubbed the company Farce Bus - are attempting to set up a meeting with First and names are being collected on petition forms.
The firm is bringing in a raft of changes on May 23, and campaigners will be protesting at the city^s bus station from 10.30am tomorrow and next Saturday.
First is to replace its circular services 6 and 7 taking in the city centre, Fairfield Road and Larkhall with two separate services, meaning people from Fairfield Park wanting to travel the short distance to Larkhall will have to go all the way into the city centre and back again.
People in Fairfield Park use the current service to get to and from those shops, while Larkhall residents rely on it to get to and from the health centre.

he might vow to complete crossrail, but once they have had a good look at the countries books and determined the full extent of debt i would hazard a guess that the electrification on GWR▸ will be canned. big savings need to be made and quick so unlikely they will commit to massive spending until the national debt is under control
The great HST▸ lives on and on and on.

All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Train operators accused of 'astronomical' fare rises

According to 'Today' (BBC» R4) this morning, TOC▸ 's are permitted to change the designation of services as 'Peak' or 'Off Peak' without any reference to the ORR» or DfT» . VT▸ in particular were criticised. I personally don't regard this as acceptable and take the view that 'Peak Hour' definitions should be hardcoded into all franchise agreements, on a line-by-line basis where necessary. I also believe that existing franchises should be modified to reflect these new rules.
Basically it's a way the TOCs can massively 'increase' fares by stealth but still turn round and say 'we haven't increased fares'.

All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Train operators accused of 'astronomical' fare rises
|
on: May 08, 2010, 06:28:25

From the BBC» website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/10103661.stmSome of the UK▸ 's biggest train operators are being accused of "astronomical" fare rises, as a result of extending peak-time hours. The rail watchdog Passenger Focus says that some fares have nearly quadrupled since last year. Train companies say the number of people affected by such rises is relatively small. Since January, over 180 trains a week have been rescheduled as "peak-time", a BBC survey found. By redesignating trains as "peak", this allows train companies to increase fares without needing permission from the regulator.
