SWR» (South Western Railway - about) now saying tunnel closed until at least Monday 11th of December.

Westbury to Weymouth now for the rest of the day:

Quote
Cancellations to services between Westbury and Weymouth

Due to a shortage of train crew between Westbury and Weymouth all lines are closed.
Train services running to and from these stations will be cancelled. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Customer Advice
Due to a ASLEF» (Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen - about) strike action 1-9 December 2023, the line between Westbury to Weymouth is affected by numerous cancellations. Road transport will not be provided during strike action. Our sincere apologies, for the inconvenience this may cause you.
Southern Railway are conveying passengers via any reasonable route until further notice.
63  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Floods across the GWR network, 4th December on: December 05, 2023, 06:10:07
The two GWR (Great Western Railway) lines to the Southwest appear to be open again today.

Latest on the line closure between Yeovil and Exeter in a new thread:

64  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Landslip Crewkerne Tunnel on: December 05, 2023, 06:07:18
Tunnel closed until at least Thursday, possibly the weekend:

Quote
Cancellations to services between Exeter St Davids and Yeovil Junction

Due to a landslip between Exeter St Davids and Yeovil Junction all lines are blocked.

What's Going On:
Train services running through these stations will be cancelled. Disruption is expected until the end of the day on 06/12/23.

What We're Doing About It:
The recent heavy rain and flooding is causing earth to move above the Crewkerne Tunnel and the line is closed to all services on safety grounds.

Engineers will conduct a further daylight assessment of the site on Tuesday and the tunnel will definitely be closed until at least Thursday 7th December.

In addition to this, heavy flooding of local roads is affecting the replacement bus services running between Salisbury and Yeovil Junction.

With further rain forecast in the next 48 hours there is potential that no services will run until the weekend.

Please do not attempt to travel between Salisbury and Exeter on Tuesday 5 or Wednesday 6 December.

Not just the GWR (Great Western Railway). The return leg of today's excursion from Newcastle to Bath Spa ran to time up the GWML (Great Western Main Line) up to London but hasn't fared so well on the East Coast Main Line and is currently north of York, but an hour and ten minutes down.

Wow, that’s along way to come just to peer into some sheds in the pouring rain and pay a heck of a lot of money for the privilege. Though being on an HST (High Speed Train) with silver service would be my highlight of the day by along way regardless of the weather.
66  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Floods across the GWR network, 4th December on: December 04, 2023, 19:48:42
I’m not sure why GWR (Great Western Railway) is advising those needing to travel to the South West to travel to Basingstoke to pick up a SWR» (South Western Railway - about) service down to Exeter. SWR have got problems of their own:

Quote
Cancellations to services between Exeter St Davids and Yeovil Junction

Due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Exeter St Davids and Yeovil Junction all lines are blocked.

What's Going On:
Train services running through these stations may be cancelled, delayed or revised. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

What We're Doing About It:
Due to flooding in the Crewkerne area we are advising customers not to travel between Salisbury and Exeter St Davids. Disruption is expected to last until the end of the day.
The line through Crewkerne has been closed again. This is because of damage caused by flooding to a tunnel in the area.

Rail replacement bus services running between Salisbury and Yeovil Junction are running but are subject to delays and short notice changes owing to flooding on roads between these stations.

So it looks like all three routes to the Southwest are closed due to flooding.

Weather in this part of the world has been absolutely awful today causing trouble for travel by both road and rail.

For the record:

Cancellations to services between London Paddington and Plymouth via Taunton

Due to heavy rain flooding the railway between Exeter St Davids and Castle Cary all lines are blocked. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Train services between London Paddington and Plymouth via Taunton and Exeter St Davids may be cancelled, delayed or revised.

Customer Advice
We apologise for the disruption to your journey today.
-
Due to heavy rain flooding the railway on this route, and on the alternative routes on the railway network, GWR (Great Western Railway) is advising customers not to travel in this area.
-
Network Rail has advised that the lines between Castle Cary and Taunton are flooded and therefore we are unable to run trains on that route.
-
Some long distance GWR services between London Paddington and the West Country were diverted on an alternative route via Bristol Temple Meads and Taunton, however that route is now also flooded.
-
We currently have no indication of when either of these lines will be able to be reopened and we're having great difficulty obtaining rail replacement road transport today.
-
Passengers from London Paddington and Reading are advised to travel to Basingstoke and then change there for SWR» (South Western Railway - about) services to Exeter St Davids via the West of England route.

South Western Railway are conveying passengers between Basingstoke and Exeter St Davids via Salisbury in both directions until further notice. Arrangements have been made for Great Western Railway rail tickets to be accepted for these journeys.

Another thing the good people of Bath can thank the Christmas market for is no train service on Thursday the 7th:

Quote
Trains will not stop at Bath Spa on Thursday 7 December. Customers travelling for the Bath Christmas Market will need to use alternative transport.

The hourly London to Bristol service will run non stop through Bath that day.

Just for the record, three trains in each direction DID» (Didcot Parkway - next trains) operate between Swindon and London.

They were:
Swindon-Paddington 0845, 1245 and 1750
Paddington to Swindon 1012, 1412 and 1912
70  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Emergency landslip works to disrupt rail journeys on: December 03, 2023, 16:11:34
Oh my. So anyone trying to use the SW mainline from GWR (Great Western Railway) land to get around there being no long distance trains to London Paddington has been well and truly stumped.
Well, not quite. The via Southampton option is still available as Weymouth to Waterloo trains are diverted via Havant and Guildford today due to planned engineering work, but only hourly. Past experience of travelling on this diverted and reduced service is that these trains are very busy, particularly on a Sunday afternoon/evening.

Pnz to Bristol.
Bristol to Southampton.
Southampton to Waterloo.

Not sure of ticketing options!(that's where a person in an office would be useful).
Bristol-Westbury or Salisbury to pick up a Yeovil/Salisbury-Waterloo service

I see that SWR» (South Western Railway - about) are not running services between Exeter and Waterloo today with services starting at Yeovil Junction instead.

Given the circumstances, I think that’s wise with no GWR (Great Western Railway) London services. You would have people coming up from the South West trying to connect onto the Waterloo services which were already operating half the usual number of services owing to engineering work between Yeovil and Salisbury.

The potential for dangerous chaos at Exeter St David’s was there and has been wisely avoided IMHO (in my humble opinion).

Edit: The Exeter to Yeovil shuttle service isn’t running either.
74  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Rail unions strike action 2022/2023/2024 on: December 03, 2023, 07:04:03
Looking at RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) for this coming Sunday 3rd of December, from what I can see, the only HSS (High Speed Services) services that will be operating to/from London is an hourly service Swindon to Paddington and an hourly service North Cotswolds line to Paddington.

There will also be an hourly HSS service between Bath and Bristol along with the usual local and inter regional services. These appear to be running as normal across the GWR (Great Western Railway) network. However, what’s shown today on RTT and what actually runs on the 3rd may be two completely different things.

Which has turned about to be the case. No Swindon to Paddington services and many North Cotswold line services either canned or running short on top of many local and inter regional cancellations/short running.

ASLEF» (Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen - about) have ended up with two strike days for the price of one. What a state our railways are in if they are able to bring the GWR network down without actually going on strike such is the reliance on overtime and the requirement not to work on a Sunday.
