I guess that makes me an arrogant w&nker!  Lips sealed

If you add up the deceleration time down Rattery Bank for the 25mph switch to Totnes Up Platform Loop, the station dwell time, then the acceleration time to get up Dainton bank instead of hitting it full on, then stopping at Totnes can cause a significant delay.

Stopping at Totnes (for HSTs (High Speed Train)) used to be timed at 5 minutes. Assume it is still the same.

Green Park to Charing Cross isn't abandoned. Trains still use it, just not in passenger service. Not to mention the fact that it is deep underground!

34  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: 9 Reasons Why Passengers Get Cheesed Off With Rail Services In The South West on: February 02, 2015, 22:54:26

3. Treasury figures show the South West gets ^41 per head spent on rail compared to ^294 in London.

I'd be interested to see the comparison of contribution to the economy between London and the south west...
35  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: Night tubes will lead to a reduction in night buses? on: January 24, 2015, 13:33:37
Whenever i've used my local night bus (actually just a 24 hours service) which has a 10 minute frequency it is always completed packed even at 2/3/4am. Incredible really. It broadly follows the route of the central line so i'm quite looking forward to the journey time reducing by well over half.
36  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Free travel on FGW from Evesham and Pershore to Worcester on: December 29, 2014, 15:16:43
Whilst there may be barriers at stations between Paddington and Bristol TM(resolve) served by high speed services, excepting some platforms at PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains) and all of Chippenham, there still should be regular checks on board. Barriers aren't intelligent enough to check someone is on the right train with an Advance, they can't check that someone is dumb-belling, they are of no use checking someone who has started at an unbarriered station and has interchanged at say, Reading or Didcot, they can't prevent someone travelling in 1st Class on a Standard ticket.

Agreed, I find it frustrating that I bother to pay to travel and nobody is there to check. It's no wonder so many people choose to evade their fares!
37  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Christmas/New Year peak restrictions on: December 29, 2014, 15:15:21
Could they not just trick the machines into thinking it was a weekend where peak restrictions don't apply?
38  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Free travel on FGW from Evesham and Pershore to Worcester on: December 28, 2014, 11:03:10
I travel between Paddington and Bristol TM(resolve) fairly often and have never once had my ticket checked. On my connecting service to/from Yatton it is generally always checked.

I travel between Swindon and Nailsea daily and probably get my ticket checked around 1 in 3 journeys. When I travel from Swindon to London I get my ticket checked most times. So I'm very surprised at your comment that you've never had your ticket checked.

I tend to travel off peak in the afternoons at weekends. The trains are generally quiet so I see no reason why ticket checks cannot be made. Whilst I agree Paddington has barriers, my last journey was from platform 8 so I didn't need a ticket to enter the station.

41  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: 'Hedge fund manager in ^42,550 train fare dodge' - ongoing discussion on: December 16, 2014, 12:22:51
Indeed, i'm suprised the TfL» (Transport for London - about)/Oyster (Smartcard system used by passengers on Transport for London services) fraud department didn't spot it? Then again if there were getting a maximum fare out of him each day...!
42  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: 'Short platforms' that aren't short? on: December 16, 2014, 12:21:30
The SDO (Selective Door Opening) system on FGW (First Great Western) HSTs (High Speed Train) seems to vary from train to train. Here at Hanborough we have a 3 car platform. Some HSTs can stop with coaches A, B & C, doors unlocked. However some only allow the doors on two coaches to be unlocked. I am told that this is because on some trains the door unlocking is contolled for pairs of coaches and on such a train unlocking the doors of coach C would also mean unlocking the doors of coach D which would be off the end of the platform.

As I understand it the SDO system is fairly complex and only certain combinations of doors may be opened, depending on the last use of the SDO system. I'm sure somebody familiar with the system might be more familiar with it.

Strewth, that must be hard to identify to whom it is for!

It is done via payroll usually.

If you have a travelcard and you're in your zone you don't actually need to touch in to exit through the barriers. I've done it at Waterloo before where to exit the mainline station I used my Oyster (Smartcard system used by passengers on Transport for London services), thinking it was the entrance to the Underground.

Similarly i've not touched out at my zone 1 station as the barrier which is usually set to exit was in reverse, however was open due to the crowds. No maximum fares for me. Presumably as I had a Z12 travelcard.
45  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: London Part-time workers set to save as fares system overhauled on: November 15, 2014, 13:27:32
Presumably these increases in Travelcard prices are effective from 1 January, so if I purchase a 1 year travelcard on 31 December I will pay the 2014 rate?
