Saw an 'R' reg bus in Bristol today with the 'WiFi fitted' stickers on the windows. A Volvo B10BLE with Wright Renown body. That'd be at least 16 years old.

Yes, but it's only 56 kbps.

Some good points there stuving. Not checking properly arguably led to the loss of the first Arianne 5, through a mismatch of computer programmes developed for Arianne 4. And a certain well-known ship, built by a certain well-known engineer, was stuck in Bristol's harbour for more than a year after launch because it wouldn't fit through the locks. The locks were supposed to have been widened, but weren't. The ship was built wider than it should have been, and fitting the engines before it was towed out, giving it a deeper draught than was originally intended.

S^gol^ne Royal's principal concern in this fiasco will be S^gol^ne Royal.

RFF are now blaming SNCF (Societe Nationale des Chemins de fer Francais - French National Railways), for not telling them there are two different specifications. Stations built within the last three decades are OK, the older regional ones are not. SNCF are blaming RFF for doing it wrong in the first place. S^gol^ne Royal, Environment Minister and former presidential squeeze, has expressed outrage. RFF have now reverted to the time-honoured get-out clause of "they needed widening anyway".

All in all, it seems they didn't get the "t^tes up", and it's all gone ".....er, wrong".

Well done to the Oxford Mail's correspondent for a totally accurate story accompanied by a relevant picture of rolling stock. Something of a rarity these days. Nice to see local journalists obviously taking pride in their submissions.

Even the name of the Cotswolds Line stations' manager was spelled correctly.  Wink Grin

Makes me think that reporter is either a frequent traveller, an enthusiast, a Coffee Shop lurker (at least), or all three.

I got the right numbers, but not necessarily for the right weeks... (Cue Andre Preview)

The two charities may decide to form a separate not-for-profit company, with directors appointed by both, to handle all the formalities here. That way, only one corporate body is involved, making the process simpler.

Planning permission has been granted for the new station buildings at Broadway. See here for further information

They are cracking on with it - see their blog. There is an open night at Broadway Station on Friday 23 May, 1830 to 2030. Poster here

Plans to sell off a heritage railway have been shelved by Somerset County Council after a bidding process failed to find a suitable buyer.

The two bidders for the freehold were West Somerset Railway Plc and the West Somerset Railway Association (WSRA).

As a result of the decision, the WSRA has said it wants to begin negotiating with the West Somerset Railway Plc to make a joint bid.

A WSRA spokesman said: "We believe that the best interests of the heritage railway will be served by a further unified bid to be submitted without delay which satisfies the requirements of both parties as well as ensuring the long term future of the railway."

Whilst nobody likes a cartel, I can see little point in having competing bids from complementary charities. I hope this sale has the interests of the WSR in mind, rather than those of the county council and its taxpayers.

Like I said...

In the bigger picture, is a move to air a problem?

Probably not, if you don't have kids and don't care whether Earth is capable of supporting human life in the future... Wink

I'm looking forward to taking my grandchildren on a jolly flight around the Cotswolds when they are old enough to appreciate it.

Modern jets compare favourably with a car with only one person on board in terms of CO2 emissions. Electric trains win hands down.

isn't that a sight for sore eyes?

Still a relative bargain compared to the ^40 billion + being wasted on HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) though?

We should agree to disagree on HS2. Like Filton Bank four-tracking, Crossrail, Portishead, Kemble reodoubling, the Bicester chord, and a whole bundle of other enhancements, HS2 will increase capacity, in this case from South to North, where voices are loud in support. If it must be built, then it makes sense to build it to a high-speed spec.

It is a shame that the budget is going to be busted for electrification, but not a huge surprise. This is one of those cases when you don't really know what needs doing until you start doing it, and the issues with the weather haven't helped. There is no question of not doing it this time, and it will be worth the pain and the cost to have a modern, efficient, and expandable electric railway. As Electric train is keen to point out (quite rightly) the future is 25KV OHLE. My former home Blackpool will be a beneficiary of electrification, and has recently had its tramway essentially rebuilt, with the foresight to make it compatible with European Tram-train spec. The local council has, very recently, approved a contribution of ^1.6 million to have the tramway run away from the promenade to Blackpool North Station. The total cost of ^16 million will be covered by that and Transport for Lancashire, the ITA (Integrated Transport Authority) that Bristol, for one, lacks. In this way, transport becomes integrated forever.

And to prove it wasn't all a dream (with the permission of all featured), here's the photographic evidence:

Or of course "nightmare"!

I am the one with the glasses in the first picture. bobm is the other one with glasses. In the second picture, bignosemac is obvious, and red squirrel was on his FGW (First Great Western) Coffee Shop first outing from the drey but was very welcome.

In due course, with trains /and or buses to catch, we dispersed. Next time?
4768  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Squirrels - red or grey, on the railways or otherwise: merged topic on: May 12, 2014, 21:38:12
I now know the answer to the latest picture posted by Sciurus Vulgaris having been told it from the horse's (or rather, squirrel's) mouth.

Kicking myself as well because I considered posting what would have been the correct answer. I didn't, simply because I could find nothing online to confirm my suspicions.

I'll leave it to Red Squirrel to give any more clues should he feel it necessary.

Moi non plus. Ihave even photographed the same scene myself, albeit some years back. Nice to meet the bushy tailed creature himself tonight! As well as bobm and BNM.

"five and twenty to/past the hour"

Is there another way to express the passage of the sun across the sky? I had no idea.

And a jolly fine meeting it was! More quality than quantity, both with a capital "K", but Four Track, Now!, bobm, red squirrel and, of course, bignosmac, put the world to rights over a couple of sherbets or six.
