5131  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Changes to cycle policy - 3/4 Aug 13 on: July 31, 2013, 19:03:29
This debate inspired me to borrow a bike, and ride one for the first time in 25 years. As soon as I set off, I remembered what to do - it was just like, er, riding a bike. More to the point, I simulated my journey to work by riding a similar distance, and finding similar hills. I got a bit sweaty and breathless, but I am seriously buying one of my own, on the assumption that this will improve with time. Whilst I would not feel happy on the B+B, I could well experience this debate from the other side.

Two Wheels, Now!, eh? Whodda thunk it?

Well I never - I appear to have been partially quoted to fit the point. Not like that's ever happened before  Grin Grin

My homage to your well-made point, Lee

Hopefully, the administrators will keep the company working on the contract, whilst they look for a way of sorting things out more permanently.

Shall we bring ourselves a little back on track ... we appear to have slid on from the unlikely (but then re-opening of the Waverley route was unlikely at the time it was ripped up) to the impractical.   Let's just keep one eye open to the thoughts that the promoters of these unlikely schemes may turn out to be (a) more farsighted than we are and (b) readers of the forum!

Sorry, Sir.

As for the public support question, I did accept in my original piece that a rail-based scheme would probably have fewer objectors than BRT (Bus Rapid Transit),

As indeed would a charnel house, a home for convicted paedophiles, a nuclear waste dump or a fracking great big shale oil plant on the Downs.

Away from the railway, but not completely, BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) Radio Bristol is leading its local news today with a report on the Bristol to Bath cycle path. Apparently, the safety and enjoyment of the path by the many is being ruined by what sounds like a few lycra-clad fascists.Dogs, cats, small children, and other more timorous cyclists have been run down here by wannabe Bradley Wiggins. About 3000 people use the path daily. Many say they would, but for the attitude of this selfish minority who see it as a speed trial track.

I offer two possible solutions. One involves piano wire, the other is to relay tracks and operate a light railway. That would carry much more than 3000 people daily, and the cyclists would have Fishponds Road, with its multi-million pound bus lane, to themselves.

Not just me, then.

No mention yet of the presence of the second driver in the cab. He had apparently driven the first half of the route, and also survived the crash. His evidence will be invaluable in establishing the chain of events.

Instead of Lundy, you could go via Instow, Barnstaple, Woody Bay to Ilfracombe, then over the Severn Barrage. Should be popular with almost nobody, so stands a chance.
5138  Sideshoots - associated subjects / News, Help and Assistance / Re: About Twitter feed @PassengerForum on: July 28, 2013, 12:05:05
I've got used to it now, and like it. A quick scan of the tweets is quicker than any other way of hearing about current hot topics, and it doesn't really flood the Twitter stream.

Leave it as is.
5139  All across the Great Western territory / Smoke and Mirrors / Re: JourneyCheck ... reasons given on: July 28, 2013, 11:23:29
Not a good day, with a derailed train, a broken down train, and a trespass incident all causing current problems. Last night, we had signalling problems at Wokingham, and flooding at Temple Meads. All four reasons in one day. (Well, five actually).

Where is the derailed train?
5140  Sideshoots - associated subjects / The Lighter Side / Re: Interesting Concept from EE on: July 28, 2013, 02:17:56
I'm sure, FTN, you would do it very sensibly while not walking across a station concourse or down the street.  Smiley

History suggests otherwise...
5141  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: First Passenger Train for 50 years? on: July 28, 2013, 02:13:55

Doesn't time fly? It only seems like last year that I was on a train on that line.

As indeed was Charlotte Leslie MP (Member of Parliament). And the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page).
5142  Journey by Journey / Bristol (WECA) Commuters / Re: Bristol Temple Meads Station redevelopment on: July 28, 2013, 02:12:08

Can we hope that when the wires come in and the mail conveyor is removed, they put aside a few quid to keep the roof clean and the gutters swept?

I would guess that the original design did not consider ease of maintenance using methods we would find economical and acceptable today. I hope someone does think about this particular ha'porth of tar.

Whilst I have never felt tempted to buy a membership to a gym, there have been times I wished that certain household items had an IP address. I could have returned from a holiday in the sun in January to a nice warm house instead of the freezer.
5144  Sideshoots - associated subjects / Campaigns for new and improved services / Re: Campaign to reopen Didcot to Southampton railway on: July 27, 2013, 19:52:54
But then if the wires also go from Bristol to Birmingham and you have four tracks up Filton Bank

Despite the apparent truncation, I agree entirely. Four Track, Now!, I say. The Electric Spine, shown in HLOS (High Level Output Specification), is intended to increase capacity from Southampton to practically anywhere.

A tank would be lucky to survive hitting that wall at that speed. BNM is right about the laws of physics - it looks like the power car almost made it around, but everything behind it tried to carry on in a straight line, like Newton said it would.
