841  All across the Great Western territory / Looking forward - after Coronavirus to 2045 / Re: What do YOU want on: July 29, 2015, 08:06:13
this enlarged area should be known as 'Bristol', not 'the West of England' or 'Fromeville' or any similarly-confected nonsense;
Froomeville, to celebrate the first Briton to win two Tours de France, sounds like an excellent name.
842  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: bus gets stuck in penryn on: July 16, 2015, 21:27:59
Happens reasonably often here in Charlbury - the S3 double-decker was stuck for two hours a couple of weeks ago. I've since put up some notices saying "Please park next to the kerb" which seem to have had a slight effect...

Oh, that's worth knowing - thanks. Bit old for clubbing but will mean we can set out on our boat first thing Saturday morning!
844  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: First Great Western - industrial action in 2015 - merged topic on: July 08, 2015, 10:22:55
Last train back isn't an issue, nor SH vs FS - we moor our narrowboat in Worcester and have functioning pairs of legs. Smiley Unfortunately it looks like the last Worcester-bound train is 19.40 from Charlbury, though, which is too early for us.
845  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: First Great Western - industrial action in 2015 - merged topic on: July 07, 2015, 22:34:54
The Cotswold Line service has been upgraded from "peak hour only" to "Between Worcester and Oxford: A two hourly service will operate at major stations along the line".

Excellent news. I might get a pint in Worcester on Friday evening after all...
846  All across the Great Western territory / Active travel: Cyclists and walkers, including how the railways deal with them / Re: Could you cycle from home to the station? on: July 05, 2015, 12:37:20
I live sufficiently close to Charlbury station (5 minutes' walk) that I don't need to cycle to get there, unless I'm actually taking the bike on the train. But if I lived any further afield I'd cycle without question.

One of the challenges is that there isn't always a tolerable cycling route from home to station. Locally the cause c^bre is Woodstock and Bladon to Hanborough: no more than 3 miles, so ideal cycling distance, but the A4095 is lethal. Widening the existing footpath between Bladon and Hanborough station (just 1400 metres) to provide a shared-use cycle/footpath would make it much more attractive to cycle, and relieve some of the pressure on Hanborough car park.
847  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Wetherspoons on or near stations on: July 04, 2015, 21:39:49
Usually Wetherspoons serve cider from a bag-in-a-box in the fridge, even if there's a pump clip - the latter is just advertising. The Westons range is the most common - particularly Marcle Hill, which is a Wetherspoons "exclusive" - but you'll often see Gwynt y Ddraig, Thatchers, Mr Whiteheads and a few others.

Most Wetherspoons now have at least one bag-in-a-box; many have more (I think there were six in the Hereford one last time I was there). Speaking of which, the 'Spoons in Hereford is a shortish walk from the station, and the Postal Order in Worcester is very close to Foregate Street.

Never run the last train because it might be cancelled? It's an interesting logic... but it kind of leads to not running any trains at all. Smiley

"Either no-one will bother travelling... or it'll be heavily oversubscribed"?!

Tell me, how do you work out that it'll be one of those two extremes, but can't possibly be somewhere in between?

As someone who actually lives in a Cotswold Line town I'm very glad they're planning to run something.
850  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Marks & Spencer at Paddington closed for refurbishment for nearly two years - ongoing discussion on: July 01, 2015, 12:04:32
..........there's already a "proper" Fullers pub at Paddington, The Mad Bishop and Bear which has won awards, why on Earth would you want a Wetherspoons shed there as well?

Does the "proper" pub serve "proper" cider now? It didn't last time I was there, whereas a Wetherspoons would. Surely London's gateway to the West Country should serve the West Country's signature drink.

852  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Re: Sharp Brewery's Doom Bar from Rock, Cornwall? Apparently not! on: June 19, 2015, 10:11:08
The Burton brewery used to be the view from my office at Waterways World - we were housed in the old brewmaster's house. It's a pleasant change to have something palatable brewed in the town's biggest brewery rather than the Carling which is its usual fare...

855  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Cotswold Line 90% fare increases from 17 May 2015 on: May 18, 2015, 17:14:27
The introduction of the new fares has been celebrated in time-honoured fashion by a train breaking down at Charlbury today, severely disrupting the Cotswold Line service for much of the day, and causing me to cancel my planned trip to Oxford this evening... hey ho.
