13216  All across the Great Western territory / Your rights and redress / Not happy. First time ever purchased tickets online via FGW and I get shafted. on: February 23, 2011, 15:10:29
I have always purchased tickets either at a station, on board, or via a WebTIS booking engine such as that provided by eastcoast.co.uk.

However this week I needed to book Group Save and, not wanting to make a trip to Temple Meads specially, I decided to do it via First Great Western's website. Wanted to book early so as to increase the chance of either getting a table or at least sitting together.

I completed the transactions and got the best seating available (no tables though  Sad). On checking my account today I discover I have been debited the correct amount of ^61.80 but this has been done as two transactions, ^22.00 and ^39.80 for the two lots of tickets, despite the fact that when I purchased them they were in a 'basket' totalling ^61.80. There is also a 'hold' on my account for ^61.80, which should have been removed once the transaction(s) were complete. This 'pending authorisation' effectively leaves me ^61.80 out of pocket until the 'hold' is removed, or 'drops off the system' as my bank refer to it. Anything up to 5 working days say my bank - it's the retailer that removes the 'hold'.

This has never happened before when I've used WebTIS. Whilst the transaction may not be processed the same day, as soon as it is the 'hold' on those funds is removed. I've never experienced a transaction where the money is debited and the 'hold' remains.

My bank are certain that the retailer is responsible for removing the authorisation 'hold', but of course FGW (First Great Western)'s web support (ie thetrainline in India) say that everything is normal their end.

^61.80 is a lot of money for me to be without even if it is just for a few days. Has buggered up my budgeting. I fear being charged twice and having to go through the tortuous VISA Debit Chargeback process.

Severely p155ed off. Thanks FGW.  Roll Eyes Angry

Reason I asked is because there is another system for identifying trains. The UID - Unique Identifier. Headcodes can be duplicated across the network and RSID is only used on 'bookable' services. UIDs are, err, unique.

The 0906 Paddington to Plymouth is thus:

Headcode: 1C76
RSID: GW1102
UID: C10440

So, the Greenfords will not have an RSID as you can't reserve seats on them.

As for the '07' - not sure! If its a different two figure number for each train then that could be the last two digits of the headcode - 2G07 is the 0716 GFD-PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains). If it's the same number for each train on the Greenford branch then possibly some sort of route identifier?
13218  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture - related rail and other transport issues / Re: Crosscountry "Train Search" IPhone app on: February 23, 2011, 00:13:08
That could be the Train's RSID number. Retail Service Identity.

Give us an example of a current service and I'll check.

I expect they'll be removing the old ticking digital clocks next :-(

I expect so. The one on Platform 1 hasn't worked for ages and the one on Platform 2 is only accurate to 10 seconds as the last digit is stuck on '0'.
13220  All across the Great Western territory / Your rights and redress / Re: Can you help with connection question? on: February 22, 2011, 18:30:17
As your tickets are routed: Evesham/Stroud, I assume they are not Advance Purchase. Therefore you could travel home from Euston via Birmingham on payment of a 'Change of Route Excess' fare. If your ticket is the Off Peak Return (SVR) or Super Off Peak Return (SSR) then no excess would be payable as the Evesham/Stroud routed fare are more expensive than the nearest equivalent (SVR) Birmingham routed fare. If that's the case it is perfectly acceptable to use the ticket from Euston via Brum without additional cost - what's known as a 'zero excess'. If you hold a different ticket type (Single, Anytime, First Class etc) then an excess fare would be payable to travel from Euston via Brum.

Not much additional time as the latest you could leave Euston would be 2103, but worth bearing in mind if you are late into St Pancras and your chances of getting to Paddington are slim.

And lo, it came to pass:

Only a matter of time before these new TVMs (Ticket Vending Machine) receive attention form the local scrotes I fear.

I'd rather that prediction hadn't come true, but it was almost inevitable. Still, lasted longer than the original Help Point.

The auto top up feature kicks in when your balance falls below ^8. So you shouldn't run out of credit as the top up will activate when you still have enough credit for one days full use. Unless you plan to rack up lots of peak journeys on TfL» (Transport for London - about) to/from the outer zones or go out to the boonies with your Oyster (Smartcard system used by passengers on Transport for London services)..... Watford Junction, Grays, etc.

Oh, and if you don't have sufficient funds in the nominated account linked to your debit card of course.
13224  Journey by Journey / Swindon to Gloucester / Cheltenham / Re: Train Manager last to know on: February 21, 2011, 21:33:06
Not sure if there is a crossover to the south of Cheltenham Spa that could be utilised or even if it's possible to be signalled to dispatch wrong line. The usual manoeuvre is to cross over to the north of the station into the Alstone Carriage Sidings thus freeing up the running lines.

Thanks bobm. I've got those. It's the Wessex timetables I'm after so I can contrast and compare!

I've tried the Wayback Machine archive for wessextrains.co.uk without success.
13227  Sideshoots - associated subjects / News, Help and Assistance / Old (ish) Timetables wanted. on: February 21, 2011, 19:27:06
Does anyone out there have any Wessex Timetable books from 2004 and 2005 they can spare, or scan and email? I am particularly interested in ones that cover the former Wessex area centered on Bristol and the Devon and Cornwall local services.

Thanks,

bignosemac.

Edit: After Wessex timetables not FGW (First Great Western).
13228  Journey by Journey / Swindon to Gloucester / Cheltenham / Re: Train Manager last to know on: February 21, 2011, 18:46:30
Whilst the turnaround could've been done at Cheltenham Spa with the time available, you also have to factor in pathing issues. It may not have been possible to find slots to get to Cheltenham and then perform the reversing manoeuvre without further delays or delaying other services.

Take a look at this article from The East African:

It appears that the picture has been randomly lifted from Wikipedia. That's as nothing compared to the text under said picture in the article.

From the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page):

Potters Bar crash: Network Rail to plead guilty

Network Rail has admitted health and safety failings over the 2002 Potters Bar crash, in which seven people died.

The company has said it will plead guilty to charges which were brought over the condition of tracks near the station in Hertfordshire.

Six passengers and a pedestrian were killed when a train from London to King's Lynn derailed on 10 May 2002.

An inquest last year concluded that a points failure was to blame. The company will be sentenced next month.

Peter Palfrey, chair of the bench at Watford Magistrates' Court, said: "In this case we have decided that the charge is so serious we cannot give punishment at this court."

Speaking outside the court, a Network Rail spokeswoman said the firm was pleading guilty because it had assumed all of Railtrack's responsibilities and liabilities when it took over the company in October 2002.

But she insisted that travelling by train was now safer than ever: "The railway today is almost unrecognisable since the days of Railtrack and the Potters Bar tragedy. All of the recommendations made by both the industry's own formal inquiry and the health and safety investigation have been carried out."

Six passengers - Austen Kark, Emma Knights, Alexander Ogunwusi, Jonael Schickler, Chia Hsin Lin and Chia Chin Wu - were killed in the crash.

The seventh victim, Agnes Quinlivan, was walking nearby and died after she was hit by debris.

More than 70 people were injured.

The Office of Rail Regulation launched proceedings over alleged breaches of health and safety law after the inquest into the crash last year.

Louise Christian, a solicitor representing some of the victim's families, said there was anger that the process had taken so long.

She expressed concern whether today's events would make a real difference. "The families had to go though an awful ordeal, and what still worries them is whether the safety concerns have been properly addressed for the future," she said. "This is now a prosecution that can only result in a fine. There's a query whether that will bring about any real accountability, given that Network Rail is a not for profit company."

The Office of Rail Regulation said it was now considering whether it was in the public interest to continue prosecutions against Jarvis, the maintenance firm responsible for the tracks at Potters Bar.

Jarvis was due in court today facing a health and safety charge, but it was not represented when Network Rail entered its intended plea.

There will be another hearing on March 21.
