13261  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Oyster Price Capping on: February 16, 2011, 16:31:58
Oyster (Smartcard system used by passengers on Transport for London services) should always work out the cheapest option for you, so if you only make one peak journey you will cap at the off peak rate plus that one journey if that combination is cheaper than the peak cap.

From the TfL» (Transport for London - about) website:

Quote
Oyster will work out the cheapest Oyster fare for you. For example, it might charge you an off-peak cap plus a peak single fare if that's cheaper than a peak cap for all your journeys in a single day.

Good find there blakey! I was right behind you - I'd found a blog post about the Beluga Endurance which confirmed it was a ship mounted crane. Google had thrown up the page you linked to further down the list.

Here's an excellent comparison of just how dinky the Class 70 is when compared to the beasts that prowl the lines in the US:

Another nice image of the banana'd Class 70 Powerfall:

An all over yellow livery would perhaps be appropriate!

Do we know whether the lifting gear was shore mounted or ship mounted?

Travelling short would not have been an issue. She persistently travelled long.
13265  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Advance Fares - Cotswold Line on: February 16, 2011, 10:31:41
I've never had a problem buying Weekend First with split tickets. Done it numerous times on FGW (First Great Western), a couple of times with Virgin and once with TPE (Trans Pennine Express). The upgrade should be for the journey being made, not the tickets held.

The preceding were found by others. Here's one I found myself:

The 2+12 FGW (First Great Western) HST (High Speed Train)

Here we are. From the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page) and RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) back in 2006:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/5249982.stm

http://www.rmtbristol.org.uk/2006/08/rmt_demands_action_to_end_spra_1.html

And you're right, blakey - Bob Crow is also spouting effluent!

PS ATOC» (Association of Train Operating Companies See - here) need to ruddy well update the above page as its very out of date.

There are lots of errors and omissions on the NRE(resolve) website. Trouble is some work in the passengers favour.....
13270  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Thames branches day ranger on: February 15, 2011, 20:55:36
Good find there IainH.

Conflicting information in the public domain regarding ticket validity. On the railways? Well I never!
13271  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Trains without retention tanks spray human effluent over railway trackside workers on: February 15, 2011, 20:41:33
While the discharge of toilets directly onto the tracks is potentially unpleasant,

Extremely unpleasant if you are a track-worker standing in the cess when a discharging toilet on a HST (High Speed Train) goes by, particularly if on the outside of a curve.

I remember reading somewhere about a photter who'd also been subject to a short sharp shower of sh1t whilst standing next to an occupation crossing gate on a max speed section of the ECML (East Coast Main Line), again on the outside of a curve. I think it happened to him more than once. I think I'd've learnt after the first shower not to stand so close to the line when a HST was approaching!
13272  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Keeping the price of your rail travel down. on: February 15, 2011, 17:11:28
Err, that's from Didcot to Chippenham where there are no evening restrictions!
13273  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Thames branches day ranger on: February 15, 2011, 17:00:51
The information provided by National Rail Enquiries appears to suggest, by omission, that the TBDR is not valid on Heathrow Connect, as it only lists First Great Western under 'Train Companies'.

The TBDR is also not listed under 'Special Offers' for Heathrow Connect on NRE(resolve) either.

As to the logos on the Heathrow Connect units, that'd be First Group's stylised 'f' and not any FGW (First Great Western) branding.
13274  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Keeping the price of your rail travel down. on: February 15, 2011, 16:47:29
It's fine. Graham quoted the Standard Day Single from Paddington to Didcot which was, at the time of the post ^24.00.
13275  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Advance Fares - Cotswold Line on: February 15, 2011, 15:09:40
CrossCountry, Virgin and SWT (South West Trains) do not allow Standard Advance holders to upgrade.
