Yup. 7pm BBC4: British Transport Films 'John Betjeman Goes By Train'.

One of the very best BTC short films.
15182  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Severn & Solent Rover start times on: March 13, 2010, 05:55:00
A worcester - Taunton Off Peak return is valid after 08:50, so you should actually be perfectly legitimate travelling on the 08:57 service.

But as Ollie said upthread 'The Manual' states this rover is "available after 0900 or when Off-Peak Day Return is valid (whichever is earler)"

There are no "Day" fares between WOS» (Worcester Shrub Hill - next trains) and TAU» (Taunton - next trains).
15183  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Severn & Solent Rover start times on: March 13, 2010, 05:45:06
Thanks for replies.

Off-Peak Day Return tickets are not valid on the 08.57 from Worcester to Ashchurch (next station). Difference in price between Off-Peak & Anytime Return is just 5p (^4.70 and ^4.75)

So the only option from where I live is Cradley Heath to Ashchurch anytime return at ^9.05 instead of ^5.55 Cradley Heath to Worcester return. Extra cost is ^3.50, so save money by cutting back on cups of tea during the day! Surprising how expensive just a few minutes can be!

Looks like it is still a practical proposition for a couple of good days out during the 7 day period.

Another option, allowing a later start, but still getting you to Taunton at the same time if you went via Worcester would be to go via Birmingham. You can do this with a Cradley Heath to Ashchurch Anytime Day Return (route - any permitted) for the railcard price of ^12. Okay it means even fewer cups of tea, but you could always take a Thermos^!!

You could take the 0824 from Cradley Heath to Birmingham Moor Street arriving 0849, do the short walk to New Street and catch the 0912 CrossCountry service direct to Taunton. Even though this train doesn't call at Ashchurch you would be permitted to combine the Cradley Heath to Ashchurch Anytime Day Return with your Severn & Solent Rover. This is allowed under the National Rail Conditions of Carriage:

Quote
19. Using a combination of tickets:
You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire
journey and one of the following applies:

(a) they are both Zonal Tickets (unless special conditions prohibit their use);
(b) the train you are in calls at a station where you change from one
ticket to another; or
(c) one of the tickets is a Season Ticket (which for this purpose does not include
Season Tickets or travel passes issued on behalf of a passenger transport
executive or local authority) or a leisure travel pass, and the other ticket(s) is/are not.

You must comply with any restriction shown on the tickets relating to travel in the trains of
a particular Train Company or Train Companies (see Condition 10).
If you do not comply with this Condition, you will be treated as having joined the train
without a ticket and the relevant parts of Condition 2 or 4 will apply, either to the entire
journey, or from the last station where the train stopped at which at least one of the
tickets was valid.
For the purposes of this Condition, a ^leisure travel pass^ means any multi-journey ticket
(excluding Season Tickets) valid for:
(i) at least 7 consecutive days; or
(ii) at least 3 days in a period of at least 7 consecutive days
and includes rover tickets, travel passes, flexipass tickets and Britrail passes.

I've highlighted the relevent parts of the condition. This is a useful rule for anyone combining tickets for travel into an area for which they have a rover ticket. There is no need to use a train that calls at a boundary point, it merely has to pass  through.

Hope I haven't overloaded you with this alternate option. You may desperately want to trundle from Worcester to Cheltenham in a (likely) draughty Class 150, but I'd prefer the slightly more expensive, but quicker option of going via Brum - even if it does mean travelling more miles with CrossCountry!

Lack of platform space at Taunton, trains can only arrived into plats 2 + 3 so either need to shunt into 4/5/6 or block the platform till next working.

My thinking was indeed to shunt into 6 at Taunton. Or maybe Fairwater Yard.

If there are problems further west that prevent XC (Cross Country Trains (franchise)) travelling beyond Exeter, why do they not terminate at EXD» (Exeter St Davids - next trains) or Taunton? At least by travelling beyond Cogload Junction they give pax better onward connection oppportunites with fast FGW (First Great Western) services, rather than dumping them onto DMUs (Diesel Multiple Unit) at Temple Meads. It cannot be beyond the realms of possibility to stable a Vomiter at EXD or TAU» (Taunton - next trains) until it's scheduled 'northbound' diagram. Traincrew issues are easily resolved by transporting them to the stabling point on FGW services.

I suspect it is operationally convenient rather than passenger friendly to turn round at BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains) rather than TAU or EXD
15187  Journey by Journey / London to South Wales / Train driver forgot to stop at Didcot Parkway. (BBC News 12/03/2010) on: March 12, 2010, 21:13:12
From the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page):

Quote
Rail operator First Great Western has apologised to passengers after a train driver forgot to stop at Didcot Parkway on Wednesday night. Dozens of passengers were affected by the mistake which meant they had to wait 30 minutes at Swindon station before returning to Didcot. The company blamed "driver error" but added that the driver was checked after the incident and deemed fit for duty. An investigation into the matter is being carried out.

Christopher Proctor, 37, from Abingdon, was one of the passengers on the 1815 Paddington to Swansea service. He said: "I was surprised when the train went shooting through Didcot Parkway because it's a scheduled stop on the service. It went through at full tilt and then slowed down when I guess the driver realised what they'd done. We heard a pre-recorded message over the Tannoy along the lines of 'could the train manager please contact the driver'. We then had a very sheepish train manager apologise over the Tannoy, citing 'unforeseen circumstances' as the reason for not making the scheduled stop."

Mr Proctor estimated that up to 150 passengers were affected.

A First Great Western spokesman said: "We apologise for any inconvenience caused to customers who wished to get off the train at Didcot.  The incident was down to a driver error and the driver was met at Swindon, where he was checked and deemed fit for duty. We do take this sort of thing seriously and a full investigation will be carried out, which will take up to 28 days to complete."
15188  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Pulling the cord on: March 12, 2010, 02:14:19
One hopes that the the TM(resolve) took the details of this 'cord puller' so that a prosecution can be made for 'improper use' of the passcom.

Another boxy, clad signal box, that shares similarities with others mentioned on this thread, is at Machynlleth:

I think it's understandable that Sadiq Kahn is unfamaliar with rail terminology - I was under the impression he was the Minister for Buses!
15191  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: HS2 - Government proposals, alternative routes and general discussion on: March 11, 2010, 19:38:38
Btline, I think it's more a case of the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) site being overwhelmed with traffic, I've been unable to download any of the HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) stuff at all today. I'm gonna try in the wee small hours, but have also ordered a few copies of the free CD (Capital Delivery)-Rom for keepsies.

15192  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: London International Fares on: March 10, 2010, 20:48:08
And don't forget for the Circle Line clockwise from Paddington you need to use the Bishops Road Underground platforms and not Praed Street. Or change at Edgware Road.
15193  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture - related rail and other transport issues / Re: Train hits car on level crossing in Berkshire - BBC News (06/03/2010) on: March 10, 2010, 15:05:06

I think the best prevention is detection equipment (cameras or something more automated) that allows someone (or a computer system) to check if cars are present before the train is allowed to come close to the crossing.

A nice idea, but for that to work you need the detection equipment to relay a message to signals sufficiently far from the crossing to alert an oncoming train, travelling at line speed, to give it enough time to stop before the crossing. Consequently the barriers will need to be closed for far longer than at present - something that motorists will not tolerate. There are already major concerns on this stretch of line - particularly around Staines - about the amount of time that barriers are down. Recent studies in association with the proposed Heathrow Airtrack scheme have shown that barrier downtime in some locations on this line already amounts 25 minutes per hour at peak times. Increasing the barrier downtime to absolutely protect oncoming trains is just not feasible.

So, it has to be education for motorists (and pedestrians) about the dangers of level crossings. It has to be firmer punitive action for those caught in 'near misses'. No easy answer for those intent on suicide......

Drivers caught commiting traffic offences at level crossings need to face stiffer penalties in court as well.

Automatic driving bans is what I'd like see.
