61  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Car Parking, APCOA (in this case, Oriental Road, Woking) - a cautionary tale on: January 30, 2024, 17:41:08
Buck passing buckers.

I predict RingGo and SWR» (South Western Railway - about) will continue the buck passing. Car parking penalties are a racket that all parties (except the customer) benefit from.

Were it me I'd ask them to take me to court. APCOA (Car parking company used at GWR (Great Western Railway) - controlled stations in the area) can't as the land is under railway byelaws and they have no standing, being merely the agent of the land owner. So it's down to SWR who manage the land on behalf of Network Rail.

APCOA want their pound of flesh as it's the only way they make a decent return for their shareholders. Their small cut from the parking tariff and the 'management' fee from the landowner doesn't cut it for them. The penalty charges are their main income.

Court would be my preferred option. Even if you lose APCOA and SWR get nothing. In the Magistrates Court any costs award wouldn't cover their actual expenses in taking you to court. Any fines and victim surcharge goes to the state. That's why the private parking pirates and those they act for so rarely do court for parking 'transgressions' on railway land.

Pay only the parking fee due. Don't pay any penalty. Railway land covered by byelaws so they'd have to take you to magistrates court. Highly unlikely.

Following on from the news about anti pollution devices being installed on SWR» (South Western Railway - about) stations, is this another 'green' initiative? Returning to a traditional message delivery system?

Stick a rubber plunger on it and you've got yourself Environmental Dalek.

Its a good idea, just thinking do ALL Bristol/Cardiff bound services use platform four?

I think SOME SWT (South West Trains) services heading towards Exeter use platform four.

Most GWR (Great Western Railway) services toward Westbury use P4, but not all. Today, for example, five services are booked to use P3.

SWR» (South Western Railway - about) services toward Gillingham are roughly two thirds P4, one third P3.

Using the IEA to back up a pro-Brexit point of view is hardly in depth analysis.

If Hatton's blame Brexit then I'd like to believe they are merely stating a fact, not expressing a political opinion.

There is the option of a fare 'hack' to get from Bath/Bristol to much of the West Midlands via Birmingham, for a day trip using a Routeing Guide easement. It works out a lot cheaper than purchasing a ticket that CrossCountry price the flow of.

DM me for more info.

73  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2024 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: January 06, 2024, 07:40:26
Services between Paddington and the south west are being diverted via Melksham. Local services are cancelled to avoid congestion on the single line. From internal sources at 0730:

Quote
Due to flooding between Westbury and Swindon fewer trains are able to run on all lines.

Impact:
Train services running through these stations have been cancelled. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Customer Advice:
Due to ongoing issues with flood water affecting large swathes of the railway, our Westbury to Swindon service, via Melksham, is suspended until further notice.

Customers travelling between Westbury, Chippenham and Swindon can travel via Bath Spa where connections are available.

For customers using Melksham station, we are working to resource alternative means of transport to provide a service.

Further Information:

An update will follow within the next 2 hours.

Internal Information:

UPDATES:

Train crew please be aware: Although the Melksham route is NOT flooded, it is having to be used for diverted 1AXX/1CXX services, as well as freight, therefore, it has been decided not to run the 2MXX services.

Update 1 (05:00): Road transport requested between Westbury and Swindon. Not yet confirmed.

TRAIN PLAN:
1AXX/1CXX being diverted due to flooding between Westbury and Newbury. To prevent congestion, all 2MXX services are cancelled.

PRIORITISED PLAN & MILESTONES:
Currently being assessed.

ROAD TRANSPORT CONTINGENCY:
Road transport has been requested.

The latest information from GWR (Great Western Railway), 7am Saturday 6th January 2024:

Quote
We’re really sorry for the disruption customers have faced after flooding closed some routes.

Rising river levels and already saturated ground means some lines may continue to be affected and customers should check their journeys before travelling.

The line between Swindon and Bristol Parkway is expected to remain closed this weekend, and the line between Theale and Taunton is likely to remain closed on Saturday 6 January. Services will continue to operate on a diversionary route and journeys will take longer.

To help customers with their journeys, those with tickets on affected routes for Thursday 4, Friday 5 and Saturday 6 January can travel up to and including Monday 8 January.
75  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Travel advice 4th January onwards on: January 06, 2024, 07:01:36
I've changed the thread title again as there is still disruption to GWR (Great Western Railway) services into the weekend due to flooding continuing to affect journeys between Swindon & Bristol Parkway, and Reading & Westbury.
