However, I suspect the RoSCos will want some guarantees from the next government, including a promise that GBR (Great British Railways) will not buy their own stock in the future.

What would the RoSCos do if they didn't receive that guarantee?

Does it have signs warning of high vaultage?

Network Rail advise that a signalling problem has now blocked the railway between Swindon and Westbury. GWR (Great Western Railway) long distance services between London and the Westcountry and vice versa, had been diverting on this route but cannot now use this route. Services will now divert on a different alternative route, which will further extend journey times.

Does that mean pilots to provide the route knowledge via Bristol?
4  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2024 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: March 29, 2024, 18:22:53
Thanks, II for that insight into the complexity of staff rostering.

I guess that calling it a planning error could be justified as the late running of the inbound train from Paddington would have been predictable from about 13:15. Time sufficient to organise a taxi for the crew?

However, the recent posts of the thread have been to draw attention to the reasons given to the public and their less-than-credible nature sometimes. Communication of delays has for a long time been something flagged for "must do better".

Please don't take this as personal criticism. I value your input to the forum.
5  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2024 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: March 29, 2024, 17:23:32
I'm shocked...............I'm sure you wouldn't wish to suggest that GWR (Great Western Railway) would be anything other than 100% honest with their valued and respected customers?  Wink

17:03 St Ives to St Erth due 17:14 will be cancelled.
This is due to heavy rain flooding the railway.

One service each way lost due to flooding? Or would you rather believe RTT» (Real Time Trains - website):
Quote
This service was cancelled due to a planning error (TA).

6  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2024 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: March 29, 2024, 12:21:01
Is GWR (Great Western Railway)'s online ticket sales engine is offering only double price fares between Westbury/Trowbridge and Chippenham/Swindon?  I have very poor connectivity today and can't take a look.

gwr.com is currently offering only the via Bath fare, except for the 18:37 WSB» (Westbury - next trains)-SWI» (Swindon - next trains) which presumably is the only train after the current time that hasn't (yet?) been cancelled.

Checking on nationalrail, it says the 18:37 has been cancelled. Journeycheck/greatwesternrailway agrees.

7  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: 2024 - Service update and amendment log, Swindon <-> Westbury on: March 28, 2024, 23:27:19
17:36 Swindon to Westbury due 18:20 will be diverted between Chippenham and Trowbridge.
It will no longer call at Melksham.
It will be delayed due to the diversion and is expected to be 11 minutes late.
This is due to heavy rain flooding the railway.

The Paddington-Plymouth, 1C89, cleared the Melksham single line by 18:14, at which time the Swindon-Westbury train hadn't passed Thingley Junction. The single line remained clear for quite some time after this, so the train could have used its proper route and deposited passengers requiring Melksham at the proper location. Instead it (2M30) delayed the following 1C24 Padd-Bristol at Bathampton, albeit only for four minutes.

A hard call for Control when there was not much time to sort out many simultaneous problems. Sorting out the capacity problems can be done at a much more leisurely pace, can't it.  Cry
8  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Trains idling at termini on: February 09, 2024, 21:50:09
If there's any worry that the DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) engines would not start after a 30 minute break, or that the lights would go out, or that the air would leak away... then it makes me wonder whether it's the design or the maintenance of the trains that  leaves a bit to be desired.

9  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Car Parking, APCOA (in this case, Oriental Road, Woking) - a cautionary tale on: January 31, 2024, 00:59:47
Now onto RingGo:

Don't bother with https://myringgo.co.uk/howitworks, as it starts with "Create an account" and appears to be dealing with the app method of payment.

I couldn't see anything intended as an explanation of the pay-by-phoning method (its as if they don't want you to use it  Roll Eyes ). So, I went to the site's T&C section. https://myringgo.co.uk/static/onlineterms. It isn't clear if these terms apply to all transactions or just interactions via the website (only the URL has the "online" qualifier. Anyway...

You can access our parking payment systems and related services via one of the tools made available to you, including smartphone, personal web page, text messaging, interactive voice recognition (IVR) by telephone and mobile/in‐car applications. You are responsible for providing all of the necessary and correct details for your parking action, such as vehicle number plate and the correct location code. Your parking action will be automatically processed on our parking payment systems on the basis of these details. The details you provide about your parking action are key for us to correctly process your parking fees. You alone are responsible for providing us with the correct details for your parking action and you will be responsible for paying any penalty charge or parking fee issued as a result of incorrect parking action details.

Please take note of the following: We are not responsible for verifying whether your parking action details are correct. We emphasize that you must read the instructions before you start using our parking payment systems, as incorrect use might lead to penalty charges, incorrect payments or other consequences.

You may choose to receive confirmation messages that your parking action is still active or to confirm that your parking session has commenced. In addition you can elect to receive a reminder advising you when your parking session is due to end. We emphasize that your parking action still remains your responsibility. You acknowledge that receipt of the reminder depends on the availability of your network and can be interrupted/delayed. Any additional costs relating to these reminders will be charged simultaneously with all other charges. Costs for these services are detailed https://www.myringgo.co.uk/parkinglocator.

So, it appears that you have to pay extra ( 10p at the moment ) to ensure that you have successfully paid for parking... or is there a final stage in the voice payment process that tells you? Obviously Grahame didn't get that far, so does anyone else on the forum know how a successful RingGo telephone payment ends?

The addition of charge for confirming the transaction reminded me of current moves to outlaw "Drip pricing" - see
Quote
. Perhaps RingGo wouldn't be affected as their hidden fee is "optional"... maybe some words to MPs (Member of Parliament) during the progession of the bill would be useful? I'd argue that getting a receipt isn't optional.

I think my main line of attack on this one, though, would be SWR» (South Western Railway - about). This is the organisation that has made a decision to offload car park payment onto organisations with a distinctly unhelpful approach.
10  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Car Parking, APCOA (in this case, Oriental Road, Woking) - a cautionary tale on: January 31, 2024, 00:26:07
Let's have a trawl through what's available, starting with South Western Railway:

https://www.southwesternrailway.com/travelling-with-us/at-the-station/car-parking

Quote
You can pay for parking at our stations by downloading the RingGo app. Once it’s set-up on your smartphone, you’ll get lots of great features such as text messages to tell you when your parking is running out and extending your stay virtually without having to return to your car. You can also book for parking online or calling RingGo on 01256 80 28 04.

Daily parking tickets are also available from self-service ticket machines in stations.

SWR» (South Western Railway - about)'s T&C at https://www.southwesternrailway.com/-/media/files/travelling-with-us/at-the-station/conditions-of-parking-motor-vehicles-and-bicycles/conditions-of-parking-motor-vehicles-and-bicycles-december-2022.pdf

Quote
If you are in charge of any motor vehicle, bicycle or other conveyance you must not park where charges are made for parking without paying the appropriate charge at the appropriate time in accordance with instructions given by South Western Railway.
Any motor vehicle, bicycle or other conveyance used, left or parked in breach of this condition may
incur liability of payment of a penalty and may be clamped or removed. The owner of the vehicle,
bicycle or other conveyance shall be liable to South Western Railway for the cost incurred by South
Western Railway in clamping, removing, storing or disposing of it.

On the  SWR website, no mention of APCOA (Car parking company used at GWR (Great Western Railway) - controlled stations in the area) that I could see.
11  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Campaign for Better Transport on a fair future for rail fares and tickets on: January 28, 2024, 23:55:26
It seems worth pointing out that the inconsistencies highlighted in the foregoing table could be remedied without changing the system of fares currently in place.

I have to say that I disagree with several of the recommendations in the summary report, including:
Quote
Government and industry should make advance fares with demand-based pricing the default on inter-city routes
12  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: National Rail web based ticketing site: december '23 update. on: January 09, 2024, 23:52:42
From the Rail Delivery Group's Routeing Guide frontpage:
Quote
PLEASE NOTE this guide is of necessity a complex document and the Journey
Planner should be used to validate any intended route (including relevant ‘via’ points)
to ensure that it can be used with your ticket. This is especially necessary if using
this guide to identify whether an indirect or unusual route is valid for use.

My question:

Is the new incarnation of the National Rail Journey Planner fit for the above purpose?
13  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Travel advice 4th January onwards on: January 07, 2024, 00:40:47
Journey planners are still showing bus services to Swindon on today, Sunday 7th. Trains to Bristol and South Wales are supposed to be diverted via Pewsey. Journeycheck predicts disruption of services via Pewsey until end of 7th.

Anybody know what's being planned?

14  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Travel advice 4th January onwards on: January 04, 2024, 23:24:10
Quoting GWR (Great Western Railway) Journeycheck:
Quote
Cancellations to services on all routes
Due to heavy rain flooding the railway all lines are disrupted.
Train services running across the whole Great Western Railway network will be cancelled. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.
Customer Advice
We apologise for the disruption to your journey today.

We are currently experiencing significant disruption on the network and customers are advised NOT TO TRAVEL.

Flooding has closed several routes and a person has been hit by a train near Reading.

Disruption is expected until the end of the day and you may not be able to complete your journey. If possible, please return in your direction of travel and make alternative arrangements. Please keep receipts for future reimbursement.

GWR and Elizabeth Line services will continue to operate between Paddington and Reading.

You would not guess from this message that services on the Birmingham-Bristol-Exeter axis have continued running, as have trains on the Taunton-Cardiff route. Severn Beach branch has suffered nothing worse than a 19 minute delay.

15  All across the Great Western territory / Diary - what's happening when? / Re: Estimates of station usage: April 2022 to March 2023 on: December 15, 2023, 15:27:43
Does anyone else have thoughts about the usage patterns?

Thanks for providing a very useful resource :-)

It does appear that patronage held up for longer around the major regional cities than it did in London or in smaller towns more isolated from the big hubs.

Looking in more detail at the graphs, there seem to be many in a form /--- , where rapid growth in the first decade of the century plateaued in the second. Where the growth slowed or ended seems to vary; in Wiltshire it's 2015-2017 while in Cornwall it tends to be somewhat earlier. A similar demand curve is seen on the Welsh Marches Line and in many other places.

Some places like Gt Yarmouth have a radically different trendline - were there service reductions or problems over several years?

For the mainstream, there could be a number of reasons why growth slowed. In no particular order, I'd suggest:
  • Changes to business and commuting due to technology
  • Patronage reaching capacity, leading to a decline in quality
  • Cumulative effect of austerity vs. RPI (Revenue Protection Inspector (or Retail Price Index, depending on the context))+ fare increases
  • The delayed effect of a reduction in the number of improvements being implemented
  • Entering a period where "improvements" caused disruption during construction or where commissioning went awry.
