Interesting today, friend of mine who has been used to buying a Devon Day Ranger with a Devon and Cornwall railcard, to go to Exeter from Axminster, when he was told it had gone up from £6.60 to £7.90, so he bought a day return instead, but then someone told him it was because of the new train company taking over!

I have always noticed recently at Axminster ticket office that anyone asking for an off peak return to Exeter has been offered a Devon Day Ranger as it has been marginally cheaper, I have thought each time that SWT (South West Trains) must have been losing out considerably, as, presumably, the revenue for a Ranger has to be shared with GWR (Great Western Railway) and Cross Country, whereas with a straightforward return SWT would get all the money. It will be interesting to see tomorrow whether the practice has altered.
48  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / More trains needing repairs on: May 15, 2017, 16:09:28
Is it just my impression over the last few weeks or have there been many more short formed trains on the Bristol/Frome/Weymouth and Bristol/Salisbury routes? Trains seem to be much more crowded in the late afternoon from BRI» (Bristol Temple Meads - next trains) recently, sometimes going to Yate also.

I am a little bit worried about what could happen, I was living in Axminster when Southwest Trains first got the franchise, 21 years ago, I travelled on the first day, no problems, but things went a little bit downhill for a short while, they seemed to run out of drivers and other train crew for a little while. However, since then I cannot knock the SWT (South West Trains) service on the Exeter line, I was at Salisbury last year, supposed to be a 3 car to Axminster and Exeter, got a bit busy before it left so they made it 6 car. As many of you know, when my mother became very ill a couple of years ago I moved back here to Axminster, but I still get the train several times a week from here to Salisbury and change there for Trowbridge, Bath, and Bristol, depending on the day. Many times (including Tuesday just gone) GWR (Great Western Railway) reduce the number of coaches from Bristol, due to what they call "more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time" meaning that trains from Bristol in the evening peak are extremely crowded, and some people give up trying to get on the train. So far, in the past 21 years, I have never known that between Salisbury and Axminster. My wfrom orry is, that now I am back in Axminster, F(GW (Great Western))R will be "borrowing" trains from LSWR to cover their rolling stock shortages and we might not get the same service. I was working in Weymouth when First took over the Wessex service, and I must admit that I was not that impressed with the way that they tried to cut the service down. This year it is 10 years, and they still say that there is a "Nationwide shortage of carriages", so how many, in this 10 years, have they ordered?

Looks like filming taking place, if the number of film lorries in Axminster station car park is anything to go by.
52  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: An honourable and much-appreciated retirement for Save the Train on: March 26, 2017, 20:49:23
I am so pleased that it has progressed so well, and I feel honoured to have spent a little of my time a couple of years ago which may or not have helped it along. You have done a wonderful job Graham, and I hope that you can keep up the good work for many years to come!
53  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Bus discrimination case on: January 18, 2017, 19:42:25
How times have changed, when I was a bus conductor in the early 70s, no-one would ever have tried to get on the bus with a child still sitting in a push chair, they always folded it up and stored it in the luggage space (usually under the stairs) ( the push chair, not the child!) I believe that if you take a push chair/buggy etc on a train you have to fold it up, so why not on a bus?
54  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Buyer error, followed by excellent customer service resolution. on: January 11, 2017, 21:11:15
I don't think that there would have been a problem, when a friend posted a letter to me from Trowbridge, writing the postcode as EH** *** instead of EX** *** it only took one more day to travel to Edinburgh, get re-postmarked and return to be delivered to my correct address.

So, basically the software needs to have a "substitute train" feature added?

I wonder that it could not be shown to the public under "Train Formation Updates" instead.

Yellow rear end could still be useful when a following train is between sections and unsignalled, as for example, at Maiden Newton, or at other stations where more than one train can occupy a platform.

I find it interesting that London Underground trains have red fronts even when running overground and London Overground trains have yellow fronts even when running underground.

Okehampton is shown as valid in the GWR (Great Western Railway) Rangers and Rovers booklet, on the Devon Ranger map.
Is said booklet available online? If so, I can't seem to find it.
No, it doesn't seem to be online, I looked everywhere and in the end gave up and phoned herself to look in the one I have at home.

The validity information on National Rail website is dated 11/06/2005, I think the GB (Great Britain) Rail Rover guide is probably a little more up to date!
